I'm from Denmark and can honestly say they all did very well. Especially since they only had 7 days. We have a lot of people (emigrants/refugees) who have lived here for several years and can barely speak Danish.

I think that it would be way cooler to see an Scandinavian person learn another Scandinavian language in 7 days. For instance, a Swedish person could learn Norwegian pretty fast IMO. Great challenge though.

To any other Scandinavian language speaker; how hard would you say icelandic is in comparison to Danish or Norwegian, I know they are obviously different but there are also many similarities, how understandable is it in comparison?
@pm71241
@pm71241 6 лет назад
As a Dane ... I actually regard it a quite a challenge to handle the other Scandinavian languages, since so many of the words are the same (although sometimes with slightly different meaning), but the pronunciation, melody and tonality differs significantly. Though I speak to Swedish and Norwegian people every day, I've kinda given up to actually speak the language. It's way too tempting to fall back to the wrong pronunciation and mix it up in a way you are not prone to when learning, - say - French. So, in general, when Scandinavian people speak to each other, they often just use their native language when speaking and then just understand what the other language means when spoken. That kinda works...

Grayson Warner As a Swedish person I can't understand Icelandic at all I think, I can understand and speak some danish and Norwegian but Finnish and Icelandic are a bit crazy considering their languages look and sound so different. To fluency, yes. But you can certainly learn a lot of the basics, depending on what your native language is. Plus, an added bonus for me would be the fact I live in North-East England and my city's dialect uses words that are spoken in Norwegian, Danish and Swedish. Like people in my city would say " am gan 'yem nu" meaning "I'm going home now". In Norwegian that would be something like "jeg går hjem nu".

This is the perfect way to show off the effectiveness of Babbel. I think it is important to realize that all these contestants speak at least 2 languages - their mother tongue & English. Learning a 3rd language is easier if you already speak 2 languages. Nonetheless, I am very impressed.

BennyDACHO while I understand your point, I think you’ve completely missed the point. I enjoy learning languages, and I think learning a language because it’s ‘useful’ is a terrible idea; how are you going to be motivated when the going gets tough because of some complicated grammar structure not in your native language if you’re learning it purely because it’s ‘useful’?? I’m sure you’ve noticed how I’ve written ‘useful’ as well though; what makes a language useful? where I live, most people speak Polish or languages like Hindi, so surely they’re more ‘useful’ languages since I could use them daily. also, you have no clue about me - maybe I have Norwegian relatives, a Norwegian boyfriend whose family don’t speak good English or live in Norway. surely that would make it ‘useful’ for me to learn Norwegian? and fyi, Russian’s the main language I study & I’ll be learning German in a couple of years time.

Don't know what you are discussing, but the real phrase is (in Danish): "Far, får får får? - Nej, får får ikk' får. Får får lam." And it means: "Dad, do sheep get sheeps? - No, Sheep don't get sheeps. Sheeps give birth to lambs". It relies on the facts that: "Får" : (noun) sheep (both singular and plural) "får" : (verb) get(s) "far": Dad ... (notice the 'a' and not the letter 'å')

As someone who is a native English speaker who has traveled frequently to Denmark and Sweden, (southern areas - Lund, Malmo, Copenhagen) I would say that Swedish and Danish, on the top surface, sound similar to a non-native speaker/listener. But Danish sounds more like the person has something in their mouths, while Swedish sounds like they need to clear their throat.

I'm not a linguist ... but I'm pretty sure that's linguistic nonsense. Danish being the official language at any time doesn't make the danish "dialects" of old east Norse the same as the swedish dialects of old east Norse. The two languages split from each other totally irrespective of any status as "official language".
@livedandletdie
@livedandletdie 6 лет назад
Peter is right. However the split was a trifold split, Gutnic-Scanian, Proto-Danish and Proto-Swedish. Gutnic-Scanian became Scanian and Gutnic, Proto-Swedish became Norwegian(now Icelandic) and Swedish, and proto-Danish became Danish and Modern Norwegian. Scanian died out in the 1600s due to Swedish law incriminating it. Gutnic is the one that most resembles a language today of the old Norse offshoots that are considered dialects today.

The tongue twister in danish "Far, får får får, nej, får får ikke får, får får lam" is meant to be spoken in a northern danish dialect, as the first word "far" (dad) is pronounced the same way as "får" there, så it ends up being pronounced "får får får får".

The title of this video is misleading. There is a big difference between being able to carry on a basic, beginning textbook conversation ("Hej, jag heter Tomas. Vad heter du?") and "speaking a language." Ok, Swedish champ, translate this: Varför främjar de den vilseledande tanken att det är möjligt att lära sig ett främmande språk på sju dagar? Det beror på att denna video endast är en annons.

Well It would be funny if it was "Läer an Bondsk å tala skånska peu sju dar" Because even teaching a native from up north the southernmost dialects is a pain in the arse and the other way around.

Actually it really isn't that different. Language is not something we should master, no language is a tool we use to communicate. And if these people can carry a basic conv, that is speaking the language!

Danish sounds like a norwegian with a potato jammed in their throat. Swedish is like the they need to clear their throat. Norwegian sounds normal, im not biased, trust me. Danish and Norwegian spelling is very similar (atleast in bokmål) so I would think most Norwegians and Danes would understand most of eachothers writing without any training. The pronounciation though, is a different story. If I don't concentrate very hard, I can barely understand a word of Danish as a Norwegian, even if the words are almost the same, to me it sounds like they're pissdrunk or something. Norwegians and Swedes, given their dialects aren't too harsh, could probably talk to eachother no problem. But reading swedish is a bit harder, I think its based more on french or something. Norwegian is in many ways "in the middle" of Danish and Swedish. As the Danes forced us to talk Danish for 200-300 years, so it affected our language very heavily, afterwards, we made one language for the cityfolk who wanted to speak "Norwegian Danish" which became Riksmål, and then Bokmål. (Book tongue/goal) Then some guy went around all over Norway and collected dialects, and then made a language out of that called Nynorsk. (New Norwegian) which was a bit closer to swedish in speech.
