Can this $5 jointer be saved? 

I'm impressed. The animation looks very cool. But more importantly, I just love the way you walk through the process. Honestly, Andy, your videos are equally good or even better than of some 1M+ subs DIY channels. I can wait to see that you'll pull off for our collab video :D

Clue: pushing down on the board can flatten it out so your taking material off all of it and not just the high spots. they make tooks to set jointer blades.

Thanks for the math. This was exactly what I needed to determine the pulley size on the motor. I hope my restoration of a 6-1/8" Craftsman jointer goes better!

The base of that old jointer would make a great 55 lb. gravity clamp... lol I have the Porter-Cable jointer also. Most of my projects are small projects, so it's a great size for my small shop. Thanks for the video.

Thanks for showing that not all restorations end up as smashing successes, but that you can always learn something along the way-- not that the learning process is always fun or easy or cheap of course. Also, I now know what a jointer is for. Always too embarrassed to ask previously.

Wow i have the same boat anchor in my shop. Think mine was more like $25 bucks but it wasn’t broke. After spending hours trying to do the same set ups you went through and ending up in the same place. I had a few more colorful words for this tool then you did. I have a larger 6” beast now and it works. But without a drought this is the most complex tool in my shop to set up so it works. There has to be an easier way.

To set the blades with the magnet tool, remove the infeed top. This allows for matching blades to the outfeed surface height AND gives access to the tightening studs with the magnets in place. (Still sux though...)

last night I gave your video some more thought, I think that before you sharpen them you should take the blade pieces out, grip them with some pliers or something, and grind them onto a good piece of diamond stone, or grind them with some sanding belts. Do not make your sharpening stone go to your blade, but make the blade go to the stone instead. Same thing apply to all your future sharpening needs.

Nice try to salvage it. It's so hard to find good information on these old tools. Hey, I learned some things watching it. Love the graphics too....and the math. The new jointer will be safer and more enjoyable. Good call on how much time fixing an old compromised tool versus making things.

Sad to see it go to parts tjat was an erly 1950s jointer. I have restored a few of thes old craftsmin jointers . The knives are a pain but seting the table levle is supper easy and yes to set the knives i run a realy hard piec of wood in revers direstion with the set screws snug not tight .the one i run is powered by the same motor as my tablesaw and on the same table witch catches the dust from bolth the jointer and tablesaw but at the end of the day a 4" jointer is verry limited i get a lot more use out of my biger jointers 👍

Hi , I like your video ! Good job . I found one like yours for $10.00 . The blades cost $14.00 . Berrings cost $8.00 per pair. IYou can sell the parts off that thing easy cutter head alone without knives in it going on eBay $50-$80 ! The tables if they’re flat ? $40-60 each . Shaft about 15-40 ! The adjusting wheel alone goes for$35-$45 ! The fence not cheap about 60-80 ! If you still have it I could used the 6 beveled washers underneath the tables they’re used for adjusting the height of the table. Thanks

Hey, just subscribed to your channel! This is an interesting video. I really appreciate seeing you go through all the steps, mistakes, and learning points as you tried to restore the jointer. As a new woodworker, it's extremely informative to see what tried as it was your first time doing some of the operations. I have a Grizzly 6" jointer I got from Craiglist with far, FAR more money invested, that has the dovetail ways cracked (I think I caused this myself when struggling to get the heavy machine into my garage workshop). I've been afraid to really take the time to set it up (in case I irreparably destroy the table adjustments), so it sits untouched for about a year. How do you like the iGauging device? I've thought about getting one for more precise setup of my tools. I love the format, polish and production value. Please keep on making more videos!

Oh no..failure. You are human, welcome brother!! Thanks for sharing and the thing about old gear where you don't know the history of it, can have a myriad of issues. Worn bearings for the cutter head could also cause the issue you were seeing. So how far do you go on this kind of project? You are to be applauded for taking the plunge to try and get this going given your admitted novice(along with me) knowledge of joiners and sharing it with us.

maybe shop for the blade online, see if you can buy a new one from somewhere instead of adjusting and sharpening it yourself.
