Have you ever seen a Canadian make Yorkshire puddings? You have now! This week I wanted to try my hand at making the classic Yorkshire pudding - but was it edible..? As a foreigner living in the United Kingdom, it only seemed right that I try to make a Yorkshire pudding from scratch!

Hey! I'm Alanna - a twenty-something documenting my life as a Canadian living in England.
I share the ups and downs of an expat living abroad and what it's really like living in the UK. It's not always easy, but there's been so many wonderful experiences, too. I post a RU-vid video every Tuesday and an additional video every Saturday on my Patreon account. I also livestream every Wednesday and Sunday at 6:30pm GMT on Twitch.

For someone who hasn't made Yorkshire puds before, you did good! You did overfill the trays though, only fill those holes to about 3/4 max, and after taking the tray out of the pre-heated oven you want to return the filled tray as quickly as possible. To crisp up the bottom more, turn the puds over for the last 5 minutes of cooking. Now check out Toad In The Hole, that is so good with a nice thick gravy :)

Honestly with from scratch Yorkshire’s the bigger they are the better. You’re likely used to the frozen/chilled shop bought puds which do the job quickly, but homemade are the best and are so easy to make! Good job!

Yes you are 99% there just add a small sausage 2 if you can squeeze that in. Another English style dish is Making chips from scratch but it uses a Chip pan (with Basket) Lard or Oil Lard is the Better way Peeled Potatoes presoaked in Warm Parboiled Water en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parboiling .Melt the Lard and Cut up the Potatoes into long wedge slices, very small spuds can be popped in the pan too, and chop a few cross wise Finished?Say you added all the above into the Chip Pan basket. Set the cooker control to Half (never Full) Put the Lid on the Pan as it will "Spit" and Safety note Keep a Watch on it after 15 to 30 Minutes Turn the heat down and Peek inside .Are they a Golden Colour?...if yes switch the Heat off and Tip the Chips ,Roast potatoes and Scollops on to a Plate with a sheet of Kitchen Roll which sops up any surplus fat drips Well done 3 recipes in the Same Pan Me? I prefer these slightly Browned off on the edges Note you can Cook Fish Too this way But It Must be done in a Clean Pan unless you like Small crumbs sticking to your fish can Pre-dip the Fish in Batter mixture if you like? And with all the YT Food Tasting test Videos I've seen Nobody Has done a Fish Taste test and chosen what is Suitable with something like Chips? And The answer is something Like Cod, Finnan Haddock which is Yellow www.stoningtonseafood.com/?menutype=finnanhaddie ,Fish Cake ,Fish Fingers And something to add, Madame? The British thing is Peas (not Garden) or Beans.

But stick it in the oven on a low heat instead of frying it.." SEEMPLES!

As a frequent attendee of yorkshire pubs I can confirm that the first lot are what you get on a pub roast when done from scratch, it is indeed the tipping of the tray that does it which is why it happens at pubs, they're trying to make so many at once that the trays are just shoved in but it all tastes the same in the end

Good attempt for a novice 👏👏. My wife never had a Yorkshire Pudding until she met me, now she loves them, one way to get into her heart 😂 BTW a good tip is to heat the oven on full for at least an hour. My in-laws love my Yorkshires too, usually end up making a batch of 24! They are lovely cold the next day with some jam 🤤 Also was listening to the video next to my Alexa and she ended up setting a timer for twenty minutes 😂😂😂
@LiamE69
@LiamE69 5 лет назад
Well the normal way to do it is you cook the roast in the oven, when that comes out you turn the oven up and put the roast tats in and the yorkshires in a bit later. The roast has enough time to stand while the yorkshires have enough time to cook. Perfect synchronicity.
@alanbayles1218
@alanbayles1218 5 лет назад
LiamE69 Yeah I do that too when I am making dinner at home, but a few times when my mother-in-law is making dinner she sort of “suggests” it would be nice for to bring my Yorkshires with me, so usually spending a couple of hours beforehand making a batch to take over 😂

My parents are both Yorkshire born and bred and (with respect) I had low expectations... holy crap. The four 'giant' puds look perfect, deep, crispy with a chewy bottom, fill them with gravy and they're literally perfect. The others... the bowl-shaped one is still good and the other three, as long as they taste good it's all good. Yorkshire puds are not fussy food, it's ideal if they're big, deep and hollow to fill with gravy but if they go a bit wrong and you end up with any shape of crispy and/or chewy batter, that's totally fine. You did amazingly well at this, I think you could tell that just from testing them but just to say, as a Yorkshireman, I think you got them absolutely spot-on.

As far as I know, Yorkshire puddings in Yorkshire are (maybe not quite so much nowadays) made the size of a dinner plate and the dinner put inside. Now you know how to make the batter, you can make the traditional British dish 'toad-in-the-hole'.
@alanbayles1218
@alanbayles1218 5 лет назад

Well done.. The big ones are very good for a first try the miss shaped ones you thought were soggy are just how my daughter likes them. In Yorkshire we get the oil which covers all the bottom of the hole smoking hot then pour the batter quickly before it cools then wip it back in the oven. Also a good tip is make the batter a few hours in advance and it will rise even more.

Came here from todays Christmas menu offering. Couple of suggestions... "Methinks you've over-egged the pudding"! 4 eggs? probably 2 too many. A splash of water in the mix creates steam which helps form the puds. More salt, swap oil for fat (duck, dripping etc) It's a perfect experiment to show your oven is hotter at the top shelf I would turn the oven to MAXIMUM, heat the trays until smoking HOT so the batter sizzles big time when you add it into the tin. This forms the crust which holds in all the yorkshire goodness, then turn the oven down to 210. Yours did turn out amazingly well. Great stuff

The same batter mix can be used to make pancakes as per Shrove Tuesday. Eat with sugar and Lemon juice, jam or savory filled with cooked ground beef and mushrooms. For best results let the batter stand in the fridge for 30 minutes. This gives the particles of flour a chance to absorb some of the liquid from the mix.

Before I clicked on the vid, I was like "This isn't going to end well" I'm actually impressed 4 great ones, 1 normal and 3 fails ain't bad for 1st attempt. When it comes to Yorkshire Puds the bigger the better as long as it holds the cup shape.

"We're in Yorkshire. We're not in Yorkshire" Given the distances, many Canadians probably consider Kent to be a little bit south of Yorkshire. ;-) Yorkshire puddings are a staple of the Sunday roast. Nice to see you tackle this very traditional food. Some would consider it, it's own food group. Puds is a great word. Do Canadians not use that word?

Alanna - if you want to make smaller ones, you use a 12-cup cake tray, or a 6-cup muffin tray if you want them not quite so small. There are no rules. Traditional Yorkshire Pudding was baked in a large, rectangular roasting tray so it came out as a big, doughy slab which was cut up into whatever size portions were required. The idea of it was to serve a plate of that up first, to partly-fill the belly of the farm labourer so he wouldn't notice how little meat there was on his main course afterwards! (I got that from reading James Herriot's "All Creatures Great And Small" - the adventures of a Yorkshire vet before the war.)

Traditionally, mothers in Yorkshire would make one massive one, cover it in gravy and serve it as a starter, to fill the family up so there were loads of leftovers so the roast would last longer into the week.

There are restaurants in the UK where the rest of the dinner is served INSIDE the Yorkshire pudding! Honestly, the bigger, the better. The secret is apparently to get the oil as hot as possible before adding the batter. (My wife told me this). Also, when they were younger, my two boys used to eat the Yorkshire puddings after the meal, sometimes with jam or honey.

We use cupcake baking tray - the yorkshires come out a more manageable size! Also good with sausages (bangers) in - called toad in the hole!

Hi Alana. I’m moving from England to Canada for a year studying abroad. I was just wondering whether you have any advice for a Brit living in Canada? Love the videos and wish you all the best

One bit of advice I'd give is buy winter clothing there, as British stuff won't cut it. And put money aside for it as it ain't cheap. And it ain't optional.

@Scott Whitworth I was going to say the same thing, then I realised the OP is going the other way. Alanna's vids are usually about Canada to UK, not UK to Canada. Might still be some useful info in there though.

Those are amazing! Traditional size here in Yorkshire. For a first attempt you are a natural. Another tip is to ensure the oil/fat is smokin’ before you add the batter. I am so impressed. A quick meal with gravy if you’re skint too x

The puds can be any size. Extra small ones are great with a slice of beef put inside each & served as canopies. Large ones can be plate size with beef, roast potatoes, veg & gravy served inside. Your ones are just over medium size, I guess...

Next up - Toad in the Hole. That's essentially one HUGE Yorkshire Pud made in a large tin, with sausages in it. Roast the sausages ahead of time to make sure they're cooked and then add the batter and give it the 20 mins. Put on a plate and add onion gravy. Trust me. It's great.

Also by adding a teaspoon of white wine vinegar the batter will be awesome for battering fish, sausages, spam etc

If you don't have any scales the easy way is equal quantities by volume, break eggs into measuring jug, note the level, pour into bowl, add flour into jug to same level, tip into bowl, pour milk into jug to same level, give it a swirl to wash off any egg and flour sticking to sides, tip into bowl, season to taste and whisk until combined, cover bowl with a plate and leave to stand in fridge for 4 - 6 hours or over night. Cook as you did, to fully cook the bottom use a pizza stone in the oven, preheated for at least 30 minutes before placing tins in the oven on the stone.
