Can This New Year Model TCM Revive A Nearly Extinct Species of XJs?

These older model (87-90) Jeep Cherokee TCMs are basically impossible to find at this given point. Not aware of a company remanufacturing them and used is hard to find. I decided to take a gamble against what people said would work so the older Renix Style Cherokees can stay on the road just a little while longer.

I plan on doing a 4.0 with a 4.2 carb intake, and the new Holley 2bbl system with a turbo in the next year. I'll make sure to do a write up on one of the forums. Doesn't seem like it'll be terribly difficult with a manual Jeep.

The extra wires on the 87-90 TCM are for the comfort mode switch. Would be interesting to know if the newer TCM responds to it and which mode it gets stuck in without the switch.

Dex, Justin or any other XJ owner and lover of this tried and true vehicle that has continued to make a reputation for itself. ❤ I need some advice and guidance from my fellow XJ owners and family 😊 I have an early built 97 XJ (build date 02/08/1997) with manual windows and locks. I've thankfully owned this ole guy for the past 5+ years and I absolutely love it and would be lost not having it. The XJ is factory black and been repainted Black from the previous owner(my favorite color) and my little boy helped me name it "Vader" 😊 He loves Star Wars and Darth Vader. ❤ Now to my question, Since I've owned it all these years, there is a clicking sound in the steering wheel when I turn it a few times. It has done this the past year or so. I oiled and greased the bushing above the brake pedal and it still does it. Could it be a worn out clock spring? My horn still works fine and I have never had the Airbag light pop up in the dash cluster....

Sorry if this is a dumb question but are you sure you're shutting the lights off before the car? There's a shutdown timer if you turn off headlight after turning the car off. That system also could be a general issue with getting headlights to shut off

@@Tpbmods i know that… my point is if its the same transmission, the control module doesnt need to match identical, you can use them off of different years as long as they have the same transmission, nothing on the tcm has to match in order for it to work, i knew exactly what my man Dex is talking about thanks very much for your concern, i had an example, yes i know it wasn’t exactly what Dex meant, but its very closely related to what Dex was saying, so i put it fourth in case anyone out there was wondering, but yea i know what he meant my dude, thanks anyway

Oh and btw renix to ob2 or vice versa obviously wont work, its not the same computer, it wont be able to read it, its like sticking an xbox game into a playstation, a child coulda told you that wasn’t going to work lol i honestly didnt think that needed to be explained and im sure Dex will figure it out soon enough, but i just wanted to let everyone know that aside from renix which isn’t very common anymore, more obd2 xjs are on the road than renix, if you got a renix xj all i can say is goodluck and have fun, they are a pain compared to the ob2
