That was a crazy interview. She seemed scattered. To be fair I wouldn't want to be mayor of Wellington. Not enough money to fix the problems that need to be fixed after decades of neglect.
@@ProfessionalBadPerson That rate payers pay through the nose for. Yeah nah. Revatilze the city ? Shit she better get to it. Oh your talking about Lambton Quay right? Nail in coffin unfortunately.
@@ProfessionalBadPerson Haha that as well. Lambton Quay gonna happen. If she was smart she would tell Genter to piss off and drop it now. But she can;t, its gonna be her legacy vanity project that will kill business's and be the end of her. Good riddance.
Sounds good to me. BTW, you do remember it's called democracy, right? She was elected and she IS working to get things done as promised. She also inherited the mess left by previous WCCs that had shirked their responsibilities to address the water pipes issues. Good on her!
What a hot mess. I’m embarrassed, as a woman and as a Wellingtonian. She sold her car to help pay her mortgage because her interests rates doubled?Everyone’s interest rates doubled! If she can’t manage her finances on $190k and after winning lotto, she has no business trying to run a city.
She is disappointing and a disgrace as the mayor for Wellington, the rates are going up at a rate that will be unaffordable at this rate, she has no idea how to stop spending on things that have no value to the city, all we expect from the council is fix up the water infrastructure and roads, she is not there to fix climate issues or solve social problems
I can’t remember the last time a disclaimer was stated before an interview having to make people aware that the contents of it are going to feature confusion. Tory Whanau is a completely self-unaware hot mess who is clearly not qualified to be in a leadership role such as this. Who provides as justification for not understanding a basic question as “I thought you were asking it in reverse”? And she’s just made the car thing even more awkward than it already was and when confronted with the fact she brought it up in the radio interview she was speechless and was caught out. So many pathological lies and word salad. Her personal issues have been well documented and whether or not they have affected or are affecting her ability to be competent in this role, she is clearly out of her depth. I don’t know whether she is going to run again or not but I don’t see Wellington voting for her again if she does. She basically got elected last time because Andy Foster and Paul Eagle took each other out with disastrous campaigns and she came through the middle as the squeaky clean fresh face. Now she is just coming off as another Andy Foster. Please Wellington put up and elect an actual competent person. We need someone who is down to earth and in touch with the basics at the very least.
@@elliotchapman4367 I actually like politicians who are clear on their values rather then independents who we all know are secret national party stooges
FFS.. this is why we need IQ tests for everyone who wants to work in parliament. represent cities, and government positions. different tests for different positions. just getting votes from the people shouldnt be enough to seek such a position. we need some basic requirements before one is eligible to run... people who lead parties.. work for parties.. hold office.. work in government... politics, council etc.. and this should go all over the world!
Im 40 y/o. Born and raised here and its a real shame what this city has turned into. These greenies haved ruined this city with their pet projects and its only going to get worse. The city centre is a ghose town now and businesses are shutting up due to their foolishness. Why would anyone want to open a business in the city with this crazy council.
so consfused! what is she even talking about...... "agree to disagree"?? which mean nothing gets done and more tax dollars wasted with her just talking...alot... so much chaos out of her month...
I don't know, I think she's doing pretty well. Not perfect, of course, but she still actually answered all the questions ... unlike most elected politicians these days! I'd much rather she was running the country than the current lot of corporate fascists.
Knew that when she said she spent a shitload of $ on her election campaign. The Kool Aid drinkers in Wellington hoover up any Green BS. This is what you get.
Best of a bad bunch. To be fair the other choices were Andy Foster and Paul Eagle who just cancelled each other out with childish fighting. Tory actually came across as the adult in the room at the time.
She needs to go… Along with the other councillors who will not listen to Wellingtonians. Many people voted for her cos she promised unity, not for all the other wastage of rate payer money. She should go traveling (after she resigns)and see that a small city with a small population, with narrow streets, hills, sideways rain, doesn’t need more cycleways, less cars, higher rates (essentially a wealth tax on the people who own the property). The golden mile is not broken!! What the greens are doing to this city is heartbreaking. Tori Whanau stood as an independent , not as a mouthpiece/ enabler for idealistic greens with no common sense. Also Tori, wasn’t your townhouse complex only recently completed?? I fail to see how your mortgage and rates have increased since then compared to other wellingtonians .
What a train wreck of an interview. She miss understands a simple question, and then is caught lying about selling her car because she couldn't afford to pay her bills. And to top it off she is keen to do another two terms as mayor. Talk about living in a realm of fantasy.
Not sure about that at all. He asked questions and was insistent. She wasn't trying to avoid the questions, she just had a mental fart moment. That makes her human and less experienced at media at this level. I'm sure we'll all get over it soon.
@@JonWrightson No way, rewatch it again, then go watch other interviews he does from various other Politicians. He was very gentle with her compared to normal Jack. I'm actually feeling sorry for her, it's clear she's out of her depth. This isn't media training, she's incompetent for the role. Her fan base can bitch and moan and call people names all they want, as I see on other platforms, but facts are facts, she needs to step down, or the Government needs to step in. The city is an absolute mess.
We don't need the fxxking cycle ways!!!! The roads were fine how they were. Lyall bay ruined, rongotai ruined, island bay ruined, berhampore ruined, new town ruined.
You mean YOU don't "need" the cycleways *today*... but you can grow up and choose to use them tomorrow, if you want, or anything thereafter... and, anyway, if you hadn't noticed yet: other folks live in the city too - you do need to learn to share a bit 'cos plenty of other people DO want to be able to ride around the city safely... and safe cycleways provide that feeling of safety, right alongside actually being safer.
They're on the council website and update automatically including the percentage increases year over year so it's really easy to see just how many more people are riding already even before the entire network is complete @@Annaspanner
There are to many people doing nothing in the council, someone said to me that there are 20 in the office in the tree maintenance department and 12 on the tools That’s why the council is losing money, should be 2 in the office
@@mattheweden-pc5pk Yes, funny how the public service has been culled but absolutely no mention of cost cutting in the council except the mayor saying she sold her car which was all BS anyway. Hate to think how much money they hand over to Downer who always seems very unproductive when fixing things (loads of people milling around looking at their phones).
She is only speaking 25 % on water, every other council in Wellington is spending 50-60% on water, she is wasting money on nice things instead of the water infrastructure, rates don’t decrease that’s a fact
She is aligning our local council policy with global climate and social justice trends... Not the job of local council! Just fix the pipes, cancel everything else!
You mean science then,@@plumbus813 Thank goodness our country has at least ONE leader smart, kind, and strong enough to listen to by far the most -- basically all -- scientists for a change!
Easily the best, along with Guyon Espiner. Such a need to dig deep, cut through the BS & hold politicians to account. Most journalists aren’t holding current govt to account, the mis truths they’re getting away with is just criminal

Jack Tame pretty consistently does, and that's wonderfully refreshing. Yeah, I'm pretty sick of the US-style empty media rhetoric our politicians too often give, and their non-answers too often accepted uncritically by TV talk-show hosts playing journalist.
What a complete word salad hot mess - it’s clear Tory has no ability to organise her thinking or give a straight answer … no wonder she’s failing Wellington.
Completely incapable but a perfect example along with whats happened in parliament of why green party members cant be in charge of anything. Straight up lied about the car sale.
Green Party candidate selection is certainly under the microscope. Elizabeth Kerikeri, Darleen Tana, Tory Whanau, Julie Ann Genter all appear to living on another planet with very similar qualities!
Ah... - wot?! Nonsense. There's a huge difference between media taking a comment out of context and a bold faced lie. - And what importance is her personal business to anyone else anyway?! She'd doing fine as a mayor. The only problem we face as a city is all the whinging whining sexist racist moaners getting hysterical about someone different being in power and visible on the telly. "mob" - indeed !
@@julianwarmington1267I’ve seen no sexist or racist comments on this conversation. Only that the majority of Wellington rate payers want their money to be spent more wisely than it is now..
The car conversation raises a genuine question. How do we know what statements to believe - which are true, which are lies, and which are , in her own words, off hand comments that are not true
The car conversation is quite straight forward. She clearly can’t manage her personal finances. Her salary is more than liveable even in this economic environment. She’s just been spending beyond her means.
@@Jon-wf3wg She did a podcast the day after she recorded the Q&A interview and she acknowledged on that podcast how much a disaster it was. So even before it went to air she knew she’d done a terrible job salad explaining. What a mess!
She thought she could endear herself to the people by saying she is struggling too and had to sell her car. Turns out when your salary is almost $200k all it shows is the bubble she lives in. Ick.
Luxon is over 9000 weekly before tax and she's under a third of that with the responsibility of working through all the carnage left by the current coalition and paying for her home. Luxon has five houses. Perspective is everything!
They're voting on that October 10th. - While I'd' prefer they didn't have to, on the other hand, an airport is a liability and we could better put the money toward fixing the messes left by previous WCCs' generations of deferred maintenance on the water pipes etc.
@@EcoKiwiMagazine And exactly how much has been spent on water improvement since this mad woman became mayor. It’s all gone on ridiculous underused bike lanes.
Hmm... I'm not sure on any of that, except that she's probably much more sane than anyone in the current coalition government admin. She certainly seems a lot more honest and rational, even if an interview with Jack Tame can produce a brain fart moment. That just makes her seem all the more human to me. Actually, she's doing a great job. Good on her.
But if there aren't any businesses left how does this work? You will increase rates to fund a project that doesnt support local businesses, doesnt take into account that more people are working from home, have created cycleways that are not being used with the hope that they will be. Its a puzzle that doesn't seem to fit together.
How do these people never learn, surely the lessons from Hamiltons Victoria street should have gone in. The street was made " pedestrian friendly" and comercial concerns were sacrificed on the alter of green fantasies. The end result is another shopping area doing just fine with car parking and ratepayers still paying idiots to undo their pet projects.
Yes. Victoria street is a desolate dangerous mess. It used to be beautiful vibrant and always busy. I’ll never understand why they removed the fountains ⛲️
She (Tory) is trying to leave a legacy at ratepayers expense. Trouble is, she will be gone soon enough and be exposed as the most fraudulent mayor ever.

Eurghm... what? Not sure what show you were just watching, but Mayor Whanau didn't lie at all. She was taken out of context about a personal question that had no place being included in any interview to start with, before let alone this one using up valuable TV air time this time: Why DIDN"T Tame ask more questions about our industrial climate crisis, and why Mayor Whanau is one of only about three or four mayors around the whole country actually taking environmental issues seriously?! I agree with EcoKiwi: the Wgtn city council was left the ancient water pipes issue to fix up because so many earlier city councillors ignored their maintenance as a pressing issue, and now, finally, it's become a problem obvious to anyone using local roads. Also, previously, with a sensible central government we'd have had Three Waters passed and local governments supported in dealing with just these issues. No one voted for that though. I watched a lot of the interviews she did with Paul Eagoe and Andy Foster. She came across as better than both of them at the time. She didn’t come across like that in the campaign at all. She was the best choice out of the three of them at the time.
@@willturbot1044 I think what she meant was the rates are going to be lower next year and this is a bit of a one off to cover things. It’s the same for a lot of other councils. But she just did a terrible job at making that clear. Not supporting her but the future rates for the next couple of years have already been telegraphed and they are lower than this year.
@@willturbot1044 I’ve just looked at the median rates of every suburb under WCC for 2024-25. The median is about 18%. I don’t know what statement you’re referring to but I would assume any statement that was made would have been referring to the median. Of course depending on each individual property some will lower, some will be higher. Clearly at 22% you’re on the higher end of a fancy expensive home.
@@willturbot1044 It’s not a nice try. This is just how the system works. It’s not my opinion. It’s a fact. Either you don’t know how the rates are calculated or you miscalculated something. It's not her ideas: the plan was put in place before her time... and our industrial climate crisis is certainly from well before her time. All responsible mayors will be taking EVERY MEASURE POSSIBLE to react and respond for the good of all species, and not just blindly ignoring all risk and responsibility. That Mayor Whanau HAS mentioned our industrial climate crisis clearly and without being asked explicitly by the interviewer is exactly the sign we need to know that she IS both intelligent and honest enough to have been bought out or convinced to do the wrong thing by fossil fuel industry reps, gas guzzler industry reps, or animal ag. industry reps. Good on her! And shame on all other mayors around the country without the spine or good sense to do the right thing for present AND future citizens of their cities and towns.
Why do you say so? Seemed okay to me. No, not a perfect interview, of course, but at least she's honest and offers intelligent, direct answers ... unlike MOST of our national level politicians these days!
Wow this dishonest rambling from the mayor of our beautiful city spells a whole lot of trouble for all of us. We need to vote her out immediately before we lose Wellington to her agenda cult.
Would Jack Tame have allowed someone from the "otherside" to get away with the stuff he let slide or asked again then let it go.. Disappointing for Wellington both people involved in this interview!
I’m not a fan of hers but the problem with Wellington goes long back before her. Courtney Place is a dumpster fire that hasn’t been refreshed since the late 90s for a start. And the bureaucracy around the earthquake prone buildings has been a mess. Places like Reading Cinema and the Amora Hotel and the Library are embarrassing
