Today we have two wagons of logs to pull out of the log job and we are going to see if two horses can pull this heavy load! Today we are hauling logs with our Percheron Draft horses, Buck and Ken!
Watch our videos to learn about draft horses- horse logging, horses farming, and horse training! Jim uses Belgian, Percheron, and Suffolk horses to do work on the farm and in the woods. He teaches about harnesses, horse-drawn logging and farming equipment, horse feeding and maintenance, and voice commands for horses. New videos uploaded every week. Keep watching to see how Jim trains his new Suffolk Punch colts as he has trained his full-grown teams!

It would probably been a harder pull for the horses with a single Large load, as he tires would have sunk deeper, and possibly broke through the frost. Nice to see a team working together like that.

It's called training, desensitizing, socializing. There is a video of a Budwieser Clydesdale team in a small arena that had a potentially horrendous accident. The way the horses reacted shows what so many people with draft horses figure out early....trust goes very far! Lots of early, gentle handling.

Well, you could see the weight took a bit to get moving but once they got going it looked like they wanted to run with those 2 trailers, then the jump up onto the road, I was concerned with that rise up, but they popped up like nothing, heck keep going! then someone calls the humane society, "Jim's been pulling doubles with his horses again", ah ha, but once on the road it's all wheels, maybe give them a breather b4 the hill. (Weight management on a straight pull level ground wheels, easier than in the woods, with trip debris sticks, to contend with the step, but traction, you tell me). They know that route so the mystery none.. You dropped the pin, awe rats, you know what's best for your horses, but I would drop the wagon in the field b4 the road. I guess that defeats the purpose of getting the wagons off the field b4 warm up, but just showing you how I think. Nice job, I think they loved the work out and flaring those nostrils, they feel Alive! Once again. You cracked me up with that bike. I worked in Surgery with a Surgeon that whiped out his mountain bike on a woods trail, trail doglegged right and down! He did not make the bent and tagged a tree with his shoulder, he could barely do Surgery for about 2 weeks we had to put his surgical gown on him because his shoulder messed up. But it got better.. E.N.T Surgeon. I ran the Laser for him. Anyways, Love Adventure, but very careful Jim, I almost killed myself a few times in Alaska, I had to cool it or I would not have made it. Wild Child. .I cooled it alot, but still take risks just try to stack more odds in my favor. Thanks for the Tips, I am a safer Man because of you and your videos. Stay Cool my friend. Hello to All. John. Ps; I like how you let them feel the weight, as the scoot swings straight in-line, hooow! ...,2.3."Step-up!" That was awesome. To see someone that understands raw power and knows how to use it. Dig It!.. Dig In! Huaah

Ok,, also, I was thinking if you get 2/3rds up the hill to a steeper spot, then for some reason, that double goes back, that could get hairy. Some Folks do not understand the physics. In Alaska, sometimes a gradual Mountain more dangerous than the obvious cliff, because, you do not see the danger, also avalanches, which are this time of the yr., are like that, the slope seems safe but it is not! Beware the gradual slope. Thanks Jim, for setting me straight. Ah ha.😄 Your like my 6th Older Brother.. I am 8 of 10. Salute.

IMHO those blacks have a tremendous amount of heart, however they are at an age where I don't think pushing them that way was a good idea. Too many variables such as ice, snow, and mud cause problems. Two smaller loads would have been better for them. If they were ten years younger I say have at it. You are a remarkable teamster, sharing your knowledge will be much appreciated for sure.

I've often been curious in situations like this - instead of making 2 trips and the time involved, have you ever ran all 4 horses, either 4 wide or 2 tandem teams in order to pull out a load or make it up the road hill?... I think you can pull it with 1 team because the snow/ground is frozen. And they are strong.
