Can Vitamix Grind Your Coffee?

The Vitamix is a very powerful blender, and I recently started to wonder if it could be a viable option for grinding coffee at home. If you've already bought a Vitamix, and you don't want to invest in another grinder perhaps this could work! I set out to grind some samples, make some comparisons to other grinders (at-home versions and commercial grade). So join me as I review the Vitamix for your coffee grinding needs.

I’ve ground coffee for at least 10 years with my vitamix dry container. It’s about all I use the vitamix for these days. The directions come with the machine. I turn it on and slowly climb to 8….turn it off and you’ve got espresso grind. There’s no issues like I saw, you grind approx 2 cups of beans at a time…I do more.

finally not just kind of VLOG that shows "you can grind beans to blender" and actually explain hows going on when we grind beans into blender.

I've added a whole bag in and blended away. Worked great and no beans were left ungrinded.

It's A good thing that I watched your video because I was seriously thinking about grinding my coffee in my Vitamix and now I know not to do that thanks for explaining all of that to us I really appreciate it.

Thanks for this well-made video. This is definitely the best and most definitive video that I have found on grinding coffee beans with a blender. I really appreciate your scientific approach and analysis of the results. Your explanations are clear and understandable. Keep up the good work!

Utilizing the dry container as well starting at a high speed pulsing the vitamix verses slowly climbing is speed is the key! I still prefer a good old coffee grinder. But the vitamix dry container is always there in a pinch

I do this all the time… beans do not get stuck under blades (at least if you grind enough for the week and not grinding daily). Increase speed until you see a vortex form and continue until coffee is ground to your liking.

I assume it will make a mess? I have a blender with all different buttons,, not sure which to use.

Agree that I would like to see this with the vitamix dry container as blades are different. But based on your video, this wouldn’t resolve the waste and extra clean up needed to deal with coffee dust. When you’re spending $$$ on coffee, this is not great. I loved the super scientific coffee geekiness of this review using a program designed by an astrophysicist ❤ Will come back for more :)

I appreciate your intelligence and I found it FASCINATING! Ya know, I've always wondered about the size of the grains, if it mattered and the results of the coffee quality, etc. I mean, like I don't sit around in the kitchen and think about it every time I make coffee but, what can I say...COOL BEANS!!

I've been using the Vitamix to grind coffee for 5 or 6 years to make cold brew but I use the wet container. I fill it to just cover the blades and run it on 7 for 6 or 7 seconds and it works pretty well. I never even considered the dry container since I hardly use it. I'll have to try it, but try using the wet container, making sure it's dry of course, and see if you get better results.

nice effort, but you need to do it with their dry container. I don't have one--but I'm curious as to how well it works for this. Clearly the regular blade isn't that great at it. Too many course pieces. I like a really fine grind. Now quite 'powder', maybe more like 'dirt', just a step up from powder.

There is a specialized dry container for grinding dry grains and coffee. It interacts with the ingredients completely different. I use my dry container all of the time to grind coffee and make different types of flour from whole wheat berries. You should try this again after reading the instructions and doing it properly with the proper container.

Thank you t85 ! I've had a Vitamix for about thirty years (lost my first one in a fire four years ago😮‍💨) and last summer I got the dry container and I'm ready to try coffee beans. Thanks again for the encouragement. I. Love. Vitamix.

It's an accessory. But one that it extremely useful for those who what to (say) grind their own flour. People who dehydrate use it to make powders (especially hot pepper fans). It uses a reverse vortex; unlike the generic blender, which pulls ingredients into the blades, the Dry Grains container pushes them away to avoid the exact sort of clumping and packing the RU-vidr above complained about. It would make short work of coffee beans. In fact, you'd have to hold back, or you'd end up with Caffeinated Talcum Powder. @@Bunny-pr8gw

I have an old 30 plus year old Oster blender. Great blender does as good of job blending as my Vitamix for simple jobs. However I broke the glass carafe and decided to use my Oster with my attachments being the Mini blender container which will make 6 oz of ground coffee and one can control the speed for grind size quiet well. If one needs lots of ground coffee for a huge coffee machine or old school large electric percolator then yes any blender will do a very good job. I was gifted a burr grinder which works ok but when it breaks I will not get another one and go back to using my Oster. Vitamix needs to provide some cool attachments like a mini food processor and mini blend container like other manufactures like Oster.

You need to use the narrower base pitcher. The new wide base 64 oz pitchers that come with the ascent series are not as functional as the narrower pitchers.

@coffeetime You should make sure to turn the dial all the way up when grinding coffee. I use a Vitamin to grind to make both AeroPress and drip coffee and have had good results. For Aeropress, close to an espresso grind is good.

Just fill the whole jar 2/3 full and grind on low for a while till they;ve all turned over and made into chunks. then turn it up a bit and then a bit more and then to mayeb 50 percent until you get the uniform grind you want. None of this tiny quantities nonsense. THey need to flow and churn over so much be in like litre size quantity or more

I'm guessing that the static electricity is what's making the coffee stick to the side of the Vitamix. I use a small blade grinder because I don't have counter space for a burr grinder. It works fairly well and over 15 years I think I'm pretty consistent with my grind sizes, all things considered. Thanks for the videos ☕
@CoffeeTimeJR

Nice to see you again Don! Thanks for watching. Yes I think this blender is honestly too powerful for the task. I've seen people like yourself have more success with more basic blade grinders. One tip I see all the time as well is to shake blade grinders! Makes grinds more even. I didnt mention it here though because I certainly wont be shaking a giant vitamix haha

Should of put a good amount in pulsed it to Consistency. I don’t believe any beans would get caught up under blades but not having a lot of beans in jar doesn’t allow the blades to act the way there’re designed to also not allowing a vortex to be made thus not allowing for beans to be Processed the correct way. You might be using the wet blade jar instead of the dry blade jar made for grinding dry goods like rice ,corn ,nuts and other hard things wet blade is for smoothies you know wet stuff dry blade for dry things two very different kinda Processes.

That's alot of work to determine that a purpose made coffee grinder is better @ grinding than a multi-tool. I feel like the majority of us just want to know...will a vitamix ground cup-o-joe taste better than pre-ground folgers?
