CAN WE ACCURATELY PREDICT ACORN PRODUCTION FOR THE FALL? HD 1080p

Acorns play a huge role in a whitetail deer diet during the fall months, on years of heavy acorn production, deer will use food plots much less, and during years with no acorns, deer will use food plots much more frequently. If we can predict 5-6 months in advance of the fall deer season if the acorns would fall or not, we could better use our resources by planting more or less food plots depending upon what the deer needed. Can we accurately predict what the acorn crops will be like for the fall???

A few years ago in New Hampshire, we had “squirrel-Magedon”, the highway’s were littered with piles of dead squirrels. You have to wonder about the previous years acorn crop.

Yes sir, definitely be interesting to track and see, I’d bet there’s is a direct correlation. Thanks for watching

Could you possibly make a video explaining the differences in planting blends and monocultures, and the pros and cons to them? Thanks

I've had a little piece of hunting ground here in SE Oklahoma for the last 18 years. The only year the bucks came to the corn feeders was about 3 years ago when we had a really late freeze and no White oak acorns.

It is amazing how much of a role they play in a whitetails life….every food plot is behind white oak acorns. Thanks for watching

Check storm blown branches on the ground and look with binoculars up at the branch tips. Mine are loaded up for the first drop in 4 years 🎉

That’s a great idea! Always a plus to have a good idea on what the nut crop will be like. Thanks for watching

I will bet we have a smaller acorn crop this fall because of the Extremely large masts last year, the trees will focus on root growth, and storing sugar, the flower production on the trees around here was down this year, fewer flowers means fewer acorns.

I hope we do and it will be really interesting to watch it and track it in the future. Thanks for watching

Have you ever thought about taking a pole saw to a good majority of the limbs on an action tree? If you are supplementing the protein and carb source via food plot you could essentially take away 50-70% of the action producing limbs which would in turn force deer into your food plot. 1800 acres sounds big enough to where you shouldn’t lose deer to your neighboring properties either

For my area it would be next to impossible unless you just cut them all down. We have a ton of white oaks in our woods and most of them don’t start limbs until 30-40 feet up in the tree. Thanks for watching

Thanks for sharing, maybe this will be your year to have a surplus if that would help your hunting farm. Thanks for watching

Wouldn't it be difficult to wait to plant a summer food plot until you could definitely know how large the acorn crop is going to be? It could be late June or even July which makes planting corn very late.

I don’t think so, I’ve planted a lot of corn in western KY in mid June, and with as wet as it’s been this spring, I probably will again this year. Soybeans can be planted in late June/early July and as long as the rains come they will do fine. Thanks for watching

In your opinion, what is the best food plot for soil with a LOT of clay? I'm in northeast florida.
@DIYfoodplotpro
@DIYfoodplotpro 2 месяца назад
That would depend on a pile of outside factors, I’ve seen clay soils that were extremely productive, and I’ve seen clay soils that were extremely poor. Most clay soils are capable of holding large quantities of nutrients, plenty enough to raise about any food plot,, but the downfall to clay soils can be poorly drained. First thing I’d do is run a soil survey and find out exactly what I was working with. Once I found out what my soil capabilities were, I’d start trying to find the limiting factor of that area when the season was in. Soybeans would be high up on my list, so long as you don’t have an average frost date about the time your season starts, and that you have large enough plots to effectively raise them. Thanks for watching.

I would amend the soil with sand, and do either a soybean Sunhemp plot, or a Crimson clover, Sunhemp, arrowhead clover plot.
@DIYfoodplotpro
@DIYfoodplotpro 2 месяца назад
You have to be really careful adding sand to clay soils, I’m theory that is what is needed to make the soils better for growing food plots. But adding large amounts of sand to clay soils can form a layer similar to concrete that will not drain.
@carrollsanders9376
@carrollsanders9376 2 месяца назад
@@DIYfoodplotpro Yes, it needs to be a silty clay with lots of Organic material, like a Cuba sand. A soil test, and reading the soil survey is what's most important before doing any amendments.
