I really love the recovery montage in this episode. The visuals and music are so effective at driving home Lihua's emotional devastation as she realizes that she's going to live after all, while her son isn't.
I'm really glad that she was able to recover from it even though it must have left a permanent scar on her.. Fingers crossed emperor won't be using her like a baby factory at least for a little bit longer 😅 not hat she or anyone has anything to say...
This was the episode where I became 100% invested in the series. Maomao was just tolerant and factual up to this point - but her claws came out hard when she discovered the crime that was still being perpetrated with the face powder. Her sense of justice is strongly-portrayed here and her tolerance for these ladies-in-waiting ends suddenly. It is a perfect scene that few anime are ever able to pull off.
Going back to the first episode when Lady Gyokuyou was lamenting how a lack of knowledge was deadly. Also Maomao's VA did the voice of Tanya from The Saga of Tanya the Evil, she let Tanya come out and play with the slap and denunciation of that Know-It-All Lady in Waiting. Jinshi is willing to do many things if it gets Maomao indebted to him and another excuse to come "check" on her progress. Mercury was mined in China back at that time and using a sweat house for "cleansing" was a treatment for the miners.
