The arguments against development aid are well-known: it results in dependency on the donor country, it stabilises corrupt regimes, and it is ineffective. Economists Esther Duflo and Abhijit Banerjee from MIT in Boston state that there are more efficient ways to give aid and to combat poverty. They discuss their ideas with Barbara Bleisch.

Esther Duflo and Abhijit Banerjee have dedicated themselves to the fight against poverty and have selected an unusual approach to doing so: They asked themselves why so many aid campaigns fizzle out without results.
The answer they came up with was that in most cases no one checks what aid or help people living in poverty actually require - or how to persuade people to use mosquito nets, to have their children inoculated or to take up education opportunities.
Banerjee and Duflo examine these questions at MIT in Boston using randomised trials, a method usually used in the field of medicine. The research couple have received numerous awards, and have advised governments and NGOs. Yet not everyone is convinced: Some accuse the economists of using the poorest in the world as guinea pigs and of overlooking the fact that poverty is also caused by politics.
Barbara Bleisch confronts the successful academics with these arguments and they discuss whether extreme poverty can ever be eradicated and they share their vision of a just world.
