Pinkysil is the best! It is technically foodsafe once cured, it’s been used for making moulds for chocolate and sugarcraft stuff for years. Modelling chocolate is also amazing to make the walls of silicone moulds and to mount half of an object into when you’re making a two part mould. It’s like monster clay but way, way cheaper, you can make it yourself and it’s even reusable.

Glad others have mentioned Robert Tolone, definitely the guy for expert advice. I would straight off the bat say though that Dave would have had a much easier time vac pulling the silicone before pouring into the mould. Nice to see you guys having a bash at this sort of thing though, love it 👍

People are saying the same thing about them reca- "duplicating" this model plus there's files online and I think 3d printing it is probably safer if the model was created from scratch and not a scan of a stormbird. However this is kinda were things get muddy since they both a model from FW to do this whilst with 3d printing they didn't. but if your using it for personal use in some countries it is legal regardless of the laws in the manufacturers home country since you can't really enforce your laws on consumers in a nation without those laws who did the action there. Again very muddy and grey but honestly I think what theses dudes are doing is fine, especially if you take into account whether a person was going to buy additional models or not, in this case it would be a stretch to argue they would for parts on a diorama.

When making a mould I always mix up a small amount of silicone and then dribble that all over the model and use a stick to poke it into all the detail and then remove bubbles. Then, you can mix up all the silicone you need and just pour it in and not worry about air bubbles on the part your casting. It also helps to pour from fairly high up, to make the steam of silicone "thin" which pops air bubbles as you pour.

You should use the replica storm bird pieces as wreckage. The wing and engines could be strewn across a desert environment with scorch lines and dunes implying there is a ship under the sand

Bit of a hint for two part molds as well, add dowels or posts that touch the model to have a pour gate and air hole as well so you can place the molde together then pour through the hole allowing the air to escape through the other.

The answer is yes it is incredibly easy to recast stuff in resin using a silicon mould.

These are great! Though if you want to pull the cast out of the one piece mold easier, you should use the exacto to cut a slit down the side of it. It will create some flashing, which can be easily gotten rid of, but it can also be minimized by cutting along an edge of the original piece that you're pulling out.

I get that time is valuable, however I think getting a slower curing silicon is probably a good idea for getting a better result. It also is more mistake proof if you need to mix more up, or take more time to use the vacuum chamber.

You should be pulling your vacuum before you pour, and pour from a high distance with a thin pour. This will insure no new bubbles show up after

Pour on one side so you push the air out of any crevices in stead of spreading out your silicone on the bottom.. ;)

When you do plaster casts, you can brush on resin. It will soak in and harden and it wont chip or flake.

So long as they're not selling it, they have every right to do this with their property. The same way you can make backups of digital files or take photographs of a painting you own even if it's of a copyrighted property. Anyone who tells you otherwise is anti-consumer as these are basic rights. You own the physical goods you buy, and what you do with them is your business.

Reproduction is one of the restrictions in copyright even if it is just for personal use, same way as if you made a digital copy of a movie but didn't buy a digital copy. This is especially true for model companies that make money by selling the model, if you want another copy you need to buy one. This is why there's so much legal questionality about some of the knockoff stuff made in China that is not by the original brand.

You mad lads, you both did well considering it was the first time and this was a thoroughly entertaining watch. This was exceptionally similar to the sh*tsh*w I went through doing this to begin with and your comments at the end are on the money in that respect. As others have said, if you have time, go watch some Robert Tolone videos on re-cas...*cough* "DUPLICATING, you'll really love and appreciate the techniques and knowledge the man departs. You need to make a jagged edge when your cutting into your mold. This will make the seal better when you reca… duplicate it. Also add in your pour spout and another spout to let air escape while your making your mold.

Forget Vacuum chambers. Any tiny air bubbles trapped in the mould will expand. If you dont want air bubbles use a pressure pot.

So Jazza took my suggestion and watch the Robert Tolone videos apparently. And proceeded to do it his first time on camera... lol Oh Jazza, never change! Dave, these are DEFINITELY NOT 1 use molds. They are Cut Molds. Watch Robert Tolone here on YT. You should be vacuuming the silicone before pouring, and then pressure potting the molds after pouring.

Great to see you point out the protective gear, but did you double glove for the resin? I think I've been watching too much Evan and Katelyn... I love that you don't try to make everything look all polished. It's part of what makes this channel special!
