Malcolm Maclver's formative years were as a grade four dropout living with his off-the-grid parents in a remote part of northern Ontario, Canada. He's since overcompensated by getting training in a host of disciplines including computer science, philosophy, neuroscience, and engineering, and is now a professor of engineering and neurobiology at Northwestern University. He works on the relationship between how animals move and how they sense their environment. He also develops technology based on exotic movement and sensing capabilities of animals. He pioneered the development of a new sensor inspired by the ability of certain fish to sense using a self-generated electric field. This new technology holds great promise for enabling work around oil spills or in submerged vessels where ordinary vision is useless. He has served as science advisor for several sci-fi TV series and movies, blogs about science for Discover magazine, and develops science-inspired interactive art installations that have exhibited internationally.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

On January 18, 2013, Caltech hosted TEDxCaltech: The Brain, a forward-looking celebration of humankind's quest to understand the brain, by exploring the past, present and future of neuroscience. Visit TEDxCaltech.com for more details.

Great point. Density of contingencies is an issue (google [maciver "environmental grain"] without brackets to see something I've written on that).

Thank you! Having our senses extend a much greater physical distance pales compared to seeing a much greater moral distance in terms of the consequence of our actions.

So what we have to achieve - is to create something that makes people care. Care for what we already share - so much so - that they do something to change it. Create something, that either brings the future - or other places and situations on this planet so close - that we really do care. Well, videos are the first step. You see a lot of people care more, because of videos they have watched. Look at all the vegans. But now there is coming virtual reality. Imagine putting someone in the situation, where people see the consequences of not changing. Or changing. Makes sense to me. But not entirely sure, if i got everything right.

The bionic arm already exists tho Handful of technical institutions have been going after both neural prosthetics and sensory transmition capability.

What 'about meaning' exactly? This definition is new to me, so I can't find it useful for communication. Why not just use 'meaning' then?

This was clearly one talk in a bunch of talks on the theme that day he says that.

No. He was defining spirituality as meaning. He was not ascribing it to any religious or supernatural ideas. As in spirituality is a synonym for meaning.

Just because the fish has a unique way of "seeing" its prey doesn't mean that is more reactive than a lion is. The fish's tail is like the lion's eyes. The fish is "proactively" searching for prey with its tail.

...Broad and vague... depending on the connotation, this(your statement) doesn't really mean anything.

Neuroprosthetics wasn't mentioned once... only some bits about how our consciousness developed and some climate change propaganda.

bottom line is cool but.. seems like highly hackable and bug prone system which is exponentially more dangerous by being designed by egocentric people. Sometimes being reactive to the environment is fine as long as we have the freedom to do so

Thus a life without spirituality is meaningless? Nonsense implanted by spiritualists and their endless false claims.
