Thanks SMT for making these videos, they gave me the confidence to repair model trains as I love buying them as is to bring them back to life. Looks like I paid attention to your videos lol
Your videos are SO well-made. Good clear audio, excellent lighting, primo closeups and sharp focus. Makes the viewing very pleasant. You even have nice looking hands. Good work all around. Thanks!
Almost the same locomotive from close encounters of the third kind - understanding fractions scene. Difference is the running number where yours is 505 the movies was 123
That sound is annoying, Harrison. You must have enough parts locos to remedy the issue. As Red Green says: "Remember, I'm pulling for ya. We're all in this together!" Thanks for sharing. 👍👍👍
It's me, I put up a lot of videos for are club train show for MARCH 5th and 6th . I did over 40 videos I did not get a thank you.I got yeld at over parking my trains on layout . I had about 10 trains every were.
Been a while since I watched one of your videos, but still enjoyed this. You have a lot more patience than I do in such matters... and a lot more talent.
I just kinda assumed the Life-Like and Bachmann pancake motors were the exact same, I guess they do have slight differences- but they do seem terribly similar so I'm not entirely shocked you can swap in a gear from a Life-Like to fix a Bachmann. It sounds like it really wants you to swap out the other one too!
Thanks for making this video. I had this very same diesel. I bought it in the late 1980's. The clicking sound you hear isn't all that the other sound on this F 9 Amtrak diesel is normal. No harm i saw the engine uncouple after you said thanks for watching! 😱😅 otherwise good job. ✅
@@drewzero1 oh yea, I have an athern blue box Amtrak F7 and it looks pretty much like the real thing. All I had to do was add handrails and weather substantially.
Re: fixing cracked gear. I saw a RU-vid tutorial clip & the guy powdered a cracked gear with baking soda, and then dripped in a small amount of superglue (cautioning not to get any into the gear teeth). The mixture hardened up & his fix worked. This fix was on a gear that was only cracked to the axel, and not cracked all the way in half like yours.
Hello Haul Harrison I ve watched your broadcasts several times this week, And then I thought he could get it to work. Because there are also different engines in there, I think I''ve never seen those, How many different types do you have out, Here in Europe there is much less, And engines that don,t come with a manual, I,m just enjoying it when you ,re working on it , Please Haul your Comment !! Greetings from Henk Belgium Border,
That gear probably won't hold long for too long. Northwest Short Line was the go to company for ALL things gear and wheel related. But they're out of business unfortunately. NWSL was a great company for the hobby for many decades.
@@SMTMainline that’s good to know. I mostly only own Athearn blue boxes, old pre powertorque tycos and some Mehanos and only two Bachman. The poor tycos are mostly dead only two out of five or six were ressurectable. I have only been working on HO locos since September really and have learned a lot from you videos so just want to thanks again!!
I have a similar F7 in Santa Fe paint and also tried to service it like you did. There is power going to the headlight but as I took apart the motor, I noticed the armature had what looked like green lime calcium build up. Should I try remove it with alcohol wipes because it looks like the buildup is preventing the motor from spinning. Excellent videos and I'm following them to restore and even service my current fleet of engines! You might like the videos I post on my channel!
I've always liked the Amtrak Phase 1 paint scheme. I hate those white plastic Bachmann gears. The N scale units are also prone to the same gear cracking. I've dealt with more than a few of them over on my channel. As far as HO scale stuff goes I think the only pancake motor stuff I have is Life-Like although there may be some old Bachmann in there too as I know I have had them in the past. I wonder if the life like gear, even though it has the proper number of teeth, might have a slightly different pitch to them and not meshing 100% correctly. I've actually had that problem replacing Bachmann gears with OTHER Bachmann gears. Slight variances from one production run to another. Not very common but it's happened more than once. I keep a box of spare trucks handy in case I need to raid one for gears. Although it's certainly uncommon for the stuff I am trying to repair, to find a white plastic geared truck without at least one cracked gear. The black plastic they switched to is far superior. Anyways good job, Harrison! -Shane
Harriston you try to place baking soda. The baking soda is sprinkled on after the super glue. It makes a stronger weld. Keep up the good work. Where's Nerf cat?
I really need to pull my trains out and fix them up, I know I have a few that aren't running. I just hope I don't have any broken gears like that cus that's one. I find that sometimes when a train isn't picking up power well that if I have another train pull it for a bit it cleans up the connections.
Hey SMT have you ever hear about Woodland Scenics TT4561 HO Tidy Track Roto Wheel Cleaner? Might be a quick way to clean wheels. I know you probably do it the manual way to teach newbies how to easily do it the manual way. Thanks
I’ve seen old Lionel wheel sets with that grime that you can chip off. I think it is a combination of dirt oil and micofragments of metal from the track. The stuff in nonconductive, and can affect the way a model tracks. It can be miserable to get completely off too.
Another project well done! Are the rumours true? Once you hit 50K you’re going to rent out a hall and throw a big bash? With a reggae band? And a bouncy castle? And cold cuts?
Mark, I heard it's going to be held in your train room, with you humming tunes on a comb with wax paper, Kraft Dinner for all, and lighting of a sparkler to round out the festivities. 😁 *Sorry, no bouncy house, but everyone can have a turn wearing the moon shoes.
Hey, do you know where I can find Lifelike gears? I have a Lifelike GP38 unit that I received as a Christmas gift, and it will run if I can replace a broken gear.
Worse comes to worse next time you need to swap out a gear like that see how the Life Like motor gear and matching truck gear work as a complete swap rather than just the motor gear
That's really cool you got another locomotive running. I have one that is a Santa Fe prob from 1990s but the front axles have split because they are plastic I was thinking the only solution to fix it is take the shell off find another chassis that has the same fuel tank connection and then it would be 8 wheel drive with 8 wheel pickup. Fortunately the motor and axles and the gears are not split on the backside however there is no easy fix for the front axles. Awesome vid as always
@@monsterdemolitionman1235 hello. Hopefully you can fix your locomotive. I know that like I said the bachmann locomotives with the split axle problem pain in the butt to fix. I know a hobby shop that I went to said if you have Riverossi there are no parts and not fixable. I said well maybe somebody needs to make some 3D printed stuff because there are so many people out there that have these older locomotives that need to be running he looked at me like I was nuts but it's true
SMT- Does the non-powered truck also have electrical contacts that could be oxidized & rust on its wheels? That red solution may also help to prevent the screws from vibrating loose.
@@SMTMainline SMT - That is 2 cases of Bachmann being short-sighted in their design changes. They should have stuck with the all-wheel drive & all-wheel pick-up designs from the 1970s!
