Can We Fix This "Lambo V10" Audi S8? One Bad Owner Away From The Junkyard...

This car is the sole reason for the delays on every other project for the last 7 months. I bought it thinking it would need some minor maintenance to be a nice daily driver....BOY WAS I WRONG. This car has consumed what little free time I have had since October BUT at least I filmed the entire process of getting it back up to speed. The D3 Audi S8 is a great car when it works right but fixing one that has been neglected or improperly serviced by multiple owners is the biggest mechanical hurdle I have faced in a long time. Bookmark the AudiRevolution forms, invest in Ross Tech VCDS, and a smoke tester if you dare purchase a V10 powered Audi S8 or S6 sedan!

I had a 2007 Audi S8. It was the most reliable car I've owned. Just oil changes and brakes. B&o was awesome. Gallardo brakes were very expensive. So sad it got totalled by getting t bone by semi. Thank you for the Audi comedy. Most of us have done this on the 4.2; this video proves that the 5.2 is just 2 more of everything. Kudos for doing the injectors - prices for them have gone crazy. You do this because it’s a solid engine. I wouldn’t have messed with the intake manifold. Leaks in the intake plastic components from cracked or missing parts are normal- most people can’t bill for the time to fix their mistakes. Audi’s are fun to work on - there’s a stamped part number on everything. What’s not to like? Great video. Thank you.

Twelve minutes into this video and I'm thinking; do not waste money on this car. However, since at that point I would look at it as a near total loss, minus any parts I might be able to sell, I would definitely be interested in dismantling engine accessories and opening the top half of the engine to see what's found. Twenty-four minutes into the video now. Thinking; when you test drove this car, the horrible performance of the car should have been immediately evident. You should have been able to start with a reasonable offer of $1,000 for this car and end with a negotiated price of no more than $1,500.

@@stapleton42extra I apologize for being harsh. It was directed at the car and Audi more specifically although it did not come across that way. To your credit, you have the patience , experience and ability to fix this car. As the car comes together, you also gain the satisfaction of knowing you reinvigorated its original performance and perhaps improved on it's reliability while also better understanding what future maintenance may be necessary and at what intervals. A big reason these cars depreciate so much, so fast, from the original MSRP is due to maintenance expenses. When a person as capable as you is able take a car like the S8 and breathe new life into it, you essentially end up with a premium luxury car for a fraction of the original cost. I commend you for having the determination to fix the car. Most people would not have the patience or knowhow. Audi dealership service center mechanics would likely not want to touch the car due to its age, but if asked to, they would end up charging so much in man-hours for troubleshooting that the cost of repairs could exceed the value of the car. I envy your knowhow. Within the next year, I plan on taking on a similar effort with a 2004 VW GTI, 2.8L VR6. The car runs well but due to its age, I would feel better refreshing most components under the hood, down to the timing chains. Since this will be a first for me, it's hard to say how this will go. For now I'm digging into the maintenance manuals and watching as many DIY videos on some of the more complicated aspects of the upcoming refresh. Good on you for having one of the rarest and coolest V10 sedans on the road today.

11:43 actually this gen of V10 has deeper sound, especially the S6/S8. Newer Audi's and Lambo's have the more highly pitched engine note.
@stapleton42extra
@stapleton42extra 21 день назад
You have it backwards... The 2008+ odd fire 5.2 in the R8 and facelift Gallardo/Huracan is the deeper sound. The even fire 5.0 in the early Galladro has the high pitch sound. The S6 S8 engine is even fire but sounds lower because of the lower redline and the way the exhaust manifolds are made, among other internal things that make it have less power. With the proper headers and exhaust the S6 S8 5.2 makes the high pitch sound. See Joel Francisco's wagon before he did the turbos as an example.

I love unique features like a V10 in a luxury sedan. I almost bought a W8 passat wagon that was in great condition because it was a vw with an 8 cyl. But there aren't many mechanics that know how to work on a w8. My daily driver is an '01 gmc 2500hd crew 8ft 8.1L Allison at. She loves 80 mph on I-75 here in Fla. My wallet doesn't though! Anyway, I loved this project and glad you were doing all the work! Seat of the pants with the internet for reference. And there's something about inventing the special tool you need. I have a few. I save everything that might be beneficial later on. That's a bad ass car. I've been leaning the same way. Ditch the practical pig for a sport sedan. But my truck is the ultimate sleeper. Tough call. I was really glad you finished the audi in the same episode. I couldn't wait to see the net! Awesome!

Pretty sure this is about as pain in the ass as VW/Audi gets. 😅As somebody who has owned 1-3 German cars, usually VWs, at any given time for the past 20 something years that I've had a drivers license, I'm impressed with your patience and diligence with this car. It's definitely outside your area of expertise, but you approached it with your usual methodical methods and beat it into submission. All the parts have such familiar looking labels. Time for me to get the VW out from under the tarp I guess. 🤪

You still have the car? And what would you do if it needed an O2 sensor that required the engine to be dropped to change it? (Bank 4 Sensor 1) Have you found a way in VAG or VCDS to delete O2s all together as an option?

I still have it. If that happened to me I’d just leave it because I don’t have time to drop the engine lol

takes about an hour minimum to remove the core support, and probably wouldve made everything else that much smoother.

I didn't have any hang ups doing it the way I did. Took me 2 minutes to cut a socket in half to turn the alternator

Do what your doing on the extra channel, awesome stuff. The “modern revivals” are something I haven’t seen much on YT. Wonder if the algorithms show any interest on that genre? They sure do for the older stuff

I’m not sure. This one chose me that’s for sure. I didn’t want a modern revival 😂

Some people just got no business owning an Audi. You say you paid $8k for it in that condition?
@stapleton42extra
@stapleton42extra Год назад
Yes. He had it listed at 10k and it didn't sell. Knowing what know now I should have offered him 6... but I have had some clutch instances where people paid my asking price without haggling me so I pay it forward when I can. Nobody likes the guy who wants to play hardball over 200 bucks.

23:00 putting an Audi into service position is way easier than whatever hacked up welded bullshit you did.
@stapleton42extra
@stapleton42extra Год назад
Yes because "service position" can totally help you get a stuck injector out of the head. The engine could be pulled out of the dang car and it would still have the same problem you bonehead 😂
