I am so thankful that you guys have talked about this!! My fiance and I have learned so much about permaculture once we were able to buy our first house. We live in Ontario, 40 mins from Toronto, a busy town and a small outdoor space, but with whatever space we have, we've grown EDIBLE perennials, fruiting bushes and trees, and then some space for our fave annual roots, herbs and veges. Having our perennial garden allowed us to have some landscaping but also FOOD every year. It has saved us so much water the year after the plants have established good and strong roots in the soil. If I could suggest one thing for those who live in multiple season climates... it's to think about growing edible perennials, scrap the ornamental trees, and instead grow nuts trees and/or fruit trees that grow native in your climate.

Feel like the two-separate-beds thing was a very haphazard effort by youtube to cover up the obvious. Like "No, no dear conservative parent. Greg and Mitch are definitely not a couple. Just two regular friends, doing regular friend things." Come on. Otherwise great stuff!
@eartheclipse8
@eartheclipse8 2 года назад
Well, trying to look on the bright side here, a lot of couples prefer to have separate beds, there are many benefits to that and it can actually improve the relationship. Furthermore, it could be a bed for "guests" those being the camera crew/production team, who might need to sleep over a few times throughout this. But yeah, the fact that they focused on it at the beginning of the show is weird... but you know, they don't really hide who they are so only a willfully blind conservative could NOT see they're a couple lol

It's a cabin on a farm... which they DON'T own. You don't go to stay at a friend's house and say "you expect one of us to sleep on the couch, and the other on a blow up matress??? homophobia!!!" Seriously dude. Be realistic. Which room in that house would fit a double bed? those rooms were only like, 1.5m wide. Do you seriously think the owner should have renovated the entire cabin, just for two guests staying temporarily?
@monhi64
@monhi64 2 года назад
This is a super rough comment, it’s not chill to assume discrimination off almost no evidence. Where are you getting the idea that RU-vid is controlling the design of that cabin and you stated it yourself they’re obviously a couple so it’d change nothing. But the worst part is you’re basically implying ASAP are shills and will agree to discriminate for money. I’d hope if they felt RU-vid was intentionally trying to hide that they’d decline the video. The other thing is that obviously it’s super common for couples to intentionally sleep in another bed at least some nights and that doesn’t make them not a couple.

While I appreciate the thought put in to episode, the reality is that most of these ideas just aren't possible with major metro areas. The question to be asked is, how do we adapt our current system of production to be more efficient?
@SoulDevoured
@SoulDevoured 2 года назад
I think no matter what we do very powerful corporations will not be happy with people attempting to provide their own food and material goods. Regular and reoccurring consumption is not only the current system it has also been the theme of power struggles for the last 100 years or so. Companies will not only fight to see people continue to consume products made by them but also will try to manipulate people into thinking that they must. And that's something people need to be prepared for. As nice as I think youtube is for hosting these shows they, as in the corporate entity, don't really want this. If people don't buy a product they go out of business and if they out of business then they don't pay youtube to air their ads. There is no place anyone is currently getting media that actually wants you to consume less. They want you to consume more. Because media makes money off of other people making money. You don't make alot of money by people sustainably feeding themselves. In fact alot of people would lose alot of money if we started doing this. All that is to say... as we try to be more environmentally conscious we really need to be aware of what obstacles we face now and what we likely will in the future.

Hi! I keep a lot of fish and I want to say great job for not excessively over-stocking the tank! Many aquaponics set ups are horrible/horrific in terms of fish living conditions, but this seems pretty good. If you want to "beautify" or add enrichment to the fish tank you can add hides (rocks, plastic logs, plastic or rock caves, or live plants if you add lights). The plants would be really pretty but they would take nutrients from the plants you're growing for food so probably not what you want (plus I am not sure if the Tilapia would just chew them up/pull them out, I keep very small fish mostly where hides are much more important but these are bigger so it might be less so.) Anyways I think it is a pretty good setup!

The part about aquaponics was really interesting, but I don't think it's really sustainable (or rather ethical) in such a small scale. Fish that are kept in such a small and overcrowded tank tend to get sick fast. So you either need to replace them regularly if they die or you'd need to medicate them, which hijacks the whole system. So it's lose-lose either way.
@sub4rctic
@sub4rctic 2 года назад
I think you'd have to grow an ungodly amount of lettuce to make it worth the calories (via fish food pellets) and energy (for lights and pumps) you put into the system.
@extropiantranshuman
@extropiantranshuman 2 года назад
everyone knows that having 2 processes is going to be more complicated with less efficiency than one. If fish carry diseases, I bet they go right into the plants that're being grown above it. Also it's really not water-wise, as you require way more water than hydroponics - you need pretty much a mini pond! Aeroponics hands-down is the best!

Theirs was just a small indoor demo system to show how they work. You can upscale the produce production much larger using different methods like vertical towers, raft beds in troughs, gravel beds etc. If you already have a fish pond then you can incorporate aquaponic grow beds into the regular filtration system. I've been building and designing these systems in my family's farm greenhouses and helped teach a course in permaculture and sustainable agriculture and did field classes in foraging edible and medical plants back when my family lived off the grid.

One of my biggest gripes with so many environmentalists is that they’re the kind of college rich kid who has nearly everything telling me specifically that I have to lose what I’ve got for the sake of the planet while he does nothing. It’s the same vein as the climate conference event goers all flying there in private jets so they can tell me I shouldn’t even run my ac in a dessert. @@culturehub2628 although they came off as upset their point still is true nonetheless. Its impossible to support the population today by homesteading. There is simply not enough farm land to go around for everyone. I'm currently working towards a nice homestead myself so absolutely love the idea for sure. But it's simply not sustainable for the entire population and that's the sad truth. Within 5 years I will have a homestead of my own rather than a 1/2 acre lot.

Some things transfer- mainly the attitude. I actually learned to forage in Canada, but only really started doing it regularly in NZ. Theres a lot less edible here than there than in Ontario, but the more species you learn the easier it becomes. The main thing is the attitude and practice. Slowly learning new species is fun and you get more rewards- but even starting knowing just two or three species it's awesome cos every find is amazing!

@NeshaeSerpentine I totally agree!! I have gotten used to living with spiders and the worst in my book centipedes because there isnt much I can do, so you just somehow cope and get over the fear. Yet those dang mozzy’s. There were days in that one month of July that I thought I was going to go mad living off grid. I had to wear the netting and because I am a larger woman didnt know that when I ordered a full body suit that it was going to be a small extra large. Ultimately I learned how to layer in the heat and use the net over the hat. At one point you do become one with the buzz if you have a project that must be completed during that awful time period when they are like Armageddon bad. I found reducing my sugar intake was super helpful which includes reduction of alcohol so living off grid is no joke and not for the faint of heart!

We literally have more than enough food for everyone on the planet, the issues are that corporations don’t want to do anything unless they get paid for it on top of that they use more water yearly than you or I could in our lifetimes. These social issues around small consumers isn’t as helpful as you’d think considering most people actually practice sustainability and the powers that be are to busy arguing instead of putting actions into place that could change and better prepare us for the future.

this is true. there are very few foraged plant foods that provide useful amounts of calories. Only nuts and berries come to mind. Almost all high-calorie plants (potatoes, grains, beans, carrots, cabbage) are farmed. If you look into what indigenous cultures subsisted on, you will see that the main source of calories was almost always fish and game -more so as you move away from the tropics and toward the poles, where the diet was almost exclusively fish and sea mammals.

I am so glad by chance I found you two! You’re more than completely adorable, you are putting the ideology into practice. Thank you for not only being hella funny while educating us, but offering a fresh perspective on back to the land movement that got into full swing in the 60’s. I have dabbled into homesteading and off grid living and have failed every time after years of giving it a shot, as it ultimately takes a community to do it efficiently. You might want to start exploring the Eco-villages out there and weave their stories of success into your science tutorials. Yet just for a reality check, in light of your mission to find ways to practically become self reliant, aquaponics has a dark side that you might have mentioned to be more thorough in your presentation. The feed it takes to keep Tilapia or any fresh water fish alive is ridiculously expensive as well as takes a lot of energy and protein resources to make into fish pellets. I highly recommend you consider doing an episode on some of the current aquaponics fish food research to mitigate this problem. I think it would be hilarious for the two of you to deal with the fly aquaponic front runners who are attempting to become truly self sufficient are using, that lays its eggs in a relatively short time period that could be an alternative. I first came across this with Growing Power urban farming training out of Milwaukee in 2011 where they converted a hoop house to this process. Oh my goodness the smell is so intense. We didn’t get a demo that time, yet the workers talked about how difficult it was to actually make sufficient. I think the science behind this would be very interesting as well as bringing viewers updated information on the current problem of feeding aquaponic fish.

That's not true. Lots of sustainable practice are actually better for food outputs. Like polyculture farming. It improves soil, protects from pests, and increases yields. Most of the food produced by commercial farming doesn't feed people... it feeds livestock. The food that actually goes to people has also been lowering in nutritional value over the years.

Not true. In the US alone, nearly 40% of food is wasted or throw away. Of that amount more than 70% is edible (meaning not spoiled) according the the US Environmental Protection Agency. And that's JUST the US. The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), says that if global food waste was addressed, it _"preserve enough food to feed 2 billion people "._ Addressing food waste would also help with climate change. Food waste contributes to 6.7% of greenhouse emissions. From the University of California: _"If 6.7 percent sounds small, here’s one way to put it into perspective. Imagine that all the world’s food waste came together to form a country. It wouldn’t be a very popular country to live in, but it would have an outsize impact on everyone else: the nation of, Food Waste would be the third largest emitter of greenhouse gases, behind China and the U.S."_

A lot of things you did and said guys on this vid is great and idealistic and, as a biologist myself, agree the most. But I think many people will think that many of these solutions may not be plausible in real life to all of the people. But this is not the point of your videos I think. The fact that you advertise this lifestyle in general, that you educate, that inform people of possible traps along the way (like your vid 'why being environmentally friendly is a scam') is admirable! This friction with all these problems and solutions is making everyday more people just think more. And that's the ultimate success!!

I'm not a fish keeping expert but the fish tank seems overstocked. How many gallons is your tank? And is it normal for tilapia to not get any light? Idk, it just looks kinda sad in there cuz of how crowded and dark it looks. Tilapia are aggressive and territorial, so they need a lot of space. Something like 40-50 gallons per each fully grown tilapia. But the pictures of tilapia farms/aquaponics systems don't look like they offer that much space to their fish. But that's just how it looks to my eyes. Edit: Turns out the tempermant of the tilapia can depend on the species.
