Keep he gun, every time you look at it, remember that feeling of being accepted into vet school and starting the job you love and has led you to this moment in life. They might just be inanimate objects but if there is a precious memory attached to it, then they are worth it.
@nathantron
@nathantron 6 лет назад
Fun Fact Matt; The reason humans put such feelings into objects is because we struggle to remember things. Yes we have the memories of things, but the human mind is keyed to using visual stimuli or sound to trigger memory, so an object that reminds you of someone or something important to you, is something that will always bring you back. Most people are more afraid of that memory disappearing, not the object, but you don't realize that. :) Hope everyone's starting the year of great!!

Matt, Christmas 1982, first Christmas with my new wife. Her present to me was a new Browning Hi-Power (along with 2 bricks in the box). Fast forward 6 years and , with her permission, I sold the Hi-Power to a friend. He sold it . Huge Regrets. My Browning Grade V Citori she gave me for my 50th birthday will never be sold. I bought her a Beretta DT-10L from the Beretta Gallery in New York for letting me retire early and putting up with my shit for 26 years. She shot the gun very, very well. She made me promise before she passed away that I would shoot the DT-10 as my primary Sporting Clays gun. I do to this day. Don't sell the Glock, it has sentimental value and a great history.

The emotional attachment you’re talking about is not felt towards the object as much as the memories that object holds for you. So I don’t think it’s silly that you don’t want to get rid of it.

The beginning of this video made me realize something. That’s last good time to spend with my dad was when he took me to the saddle shop, and I got to buy my very own saddle. I constantly am telling myself “go sell it and buy yourself something you like better.” And I always kinda am like nahhh I like it to much. But it’s not the saddle I have an emotional attachment to, it’s the memory’s.

Do a step better and just swap out the barrel for the .357 Sig conversion. Same extractor, same spring, same mags... just the barrel and just like that you can have what is arguably the best self-defense caliber around. Get some Underwood solid copper Lehigh Defense bullets and you can get the energy output in the territory of some 10mm loads.

I got a big old kitchen cupboard that stood in my grandparents kitchen for as long as I can remember. They are both gone now, but that piece of old furniture which is also very practical will stick with me for the rest of my life and remind me of what it was like to sit in their kitchen. I also have an old measuring cup from my other grandma which we used to make cookies at her place, and that resembles that pair of grandparents to me. Never gonna get rid of that also. In my hall there is a board with hooks for my keys that was a gift of my late Dad, same deal - never going to replace it.

This really made me think. I will admit, usually when you start talking about guns I switch to a different video, Im Australian and we dont have the gun culture you guys do over there.....and I like it like that, no disapproval or anything, just different strokes for different folks....but I stuck with this vid because of why you were talking about that particular gun. I would keep it.....just as I keep my Dad's pen that I was given after he died, even though it doesnt work any more....the love and the memories that I feel every time I touch that pen cant be replaced. Its a human thing, part of how we keep our record.

I lost a lot of things that I had emotional attachments to, when my house was ravaged by Superstorm Sandy. I had to learn how to just let it go, or spend the rest of my life grieving. Your great-uncle (Uncle Floyd, of course, right?) is a very wise man.

I hear ya, my husband (my boyfriend at the time) bought his first brand new pick up which a few years later became my truck for many years (which I drove until I graduated college). When I got my job I bought my first car but the Ranger stayed with us. We currently still own said Ranger with 250,000 miles on that poor engine. The thing is we put everyone of those miles on that 94 model year frame. Yes, we have had that truck for 25 years and until recently it still looked beautiful but it has been hit a couple times. My husband uses it as a back up vehicle to keep miles down on our other vehicles and it has amazing gas mileage. I LOVE THAT TRUCK. I don’t ever want to get rid of it but the last hit ( a few weeks ago) has forced the back bumper to flip under so the license plate is currently looking at the ground. Rust is bad so not sure it can be fixed easily. I’m so sad. 😭

The day before my 21st birthday my Grandpa asked me what I was going to do. I told him I was gonna apply for my CPL and go buy a handgun. He asked what caliber? I told him probably 9mm, and he got up, walked into his bedroom and handed me his S&W Sigma 9mm and said happy birthday. I know the gun isn't the best, but It shoots good, and hasn't had any problems. I don't shoot it much anymore, but I will never sell it.

It isn't the object that we get attached to. It is the memory and meaning behind how we get something. I am a Miniature Wargamer and my first miniature I ever assembled and painted is kept because of the memories tied to it. In this case it was my friend and myself sitting down and practicing painting it. Then again... A 30mm x 35mm metal figure is smaller than most peoples attached objects.

I have had a lot of things handed down to me, since I've become sort of the family chronicler - like a knife my great-great-grandfather used to own more than a hundred years ago, or a piece of lace crocheted by a great-grandaunt before WW2. While they're only inanimate objects, I still feel like they are kind of an intersection between me and the people who used to hold them in their hands so long ago. I also keep random stuff as keepsakes to remind me of certain moments in my life or places I have been to (stones, bottlecaps, flyers, whatever), so I totally get that you feel attached to that particular gun.

The emotional attachment isn't to the item, but to what it represents. It's a physical representation of an occurrence or a person you love because they gave it to you or it belonged to them. Speaking as someone who's lost stuff in a house fire and another incident, you'll still remember the person and/or event long after the items are gone. It still doesn't stop me from wanting to hold onto "special items". My mom passed away nearly 4 years ago and I have several things of hers that are of no real use to me personally, but I keep them anyway.

It still smells like her, so when I start to miss her in my closet and take the bag off and take a good snuff. It's silly I know, but it makes me feel good. My first handgun was a Smith & Wesson 38 special.it really wasn't the right gun for me, but at the time it was. So when I decided to get rid of it, I gave it to my son. It's also that when people are facing their own mortality, they try to make their wishes known about sentimental items/collections like that before they die so they don't pass the burden to their loved ones of trying to figure out what they might've/would've wanted. I'm doing my best to go through EVERYTHING I have and to ensure my loved ones know what I want done with what's remaining.

Keep it. My dad bought me a Mossberg 500 when I graduated Marine boot camp. I ended up selling it a few years later and I've regretted it ever since. I really wanted a five-seven and thought I wanted it more than that 500 so I sold the mossy and a few other guns to buy it. I ended up selling the five-seven afterwards anyway for a bunch of reasons. It may have been just a cheap 12 ga pump gun, but if I could find my mossberg and buy it back, I would in a heartbeat.

I still have a 22 rifle that my husband got from my grandpa more than 50 years ago. It isn't a particularly valuable rifle, but because it was my grandpa's, I will probably keep it for my son. Yeah, my grandpa really liked that rifle.

My favourite gun is my old ranger reapter bolt action .22. It was my great grandfathers (he passed about 14 year ago) Then my grandfather's (he passed back in september) Then my fathers (he's still alive) He held onto it till I got my firearms pal. And now mine being my most favourite gun. And I hope to pass it on to my future children one day. There's no way you can take it away from me. Even if guns become banned I'd hide it. I'm 20 now and I plan to keep it as long as I can till I pass it down threw my future family

Actually, you are allowed to have a detachable magazine in California, however it can only be a 10 round capacity (or riveted at the 10 round mark, either way) and it can't have a button to detach it, so there are loopholes even around that.

OK, emotional attachments catch us by surprise. Watching your dad's video sitting in his truck and bringing out things that he treasures. When he brought out the 22 rifle it brought an emotional reaction to me that had nothing to do with him or that gun, it was my memories that were revived.

Ya know, as I sit here at 5:22am and I think of all of the just, crap, that's wrong with this world. I also look at the things you and your family do, the fun you have, the happiness you bring. And it brings a little bit of hope for this world back, and that when it hits the fan, that you'll still be around to entertain us, and comfort us, and make us happy. I love your vids Matt. Keep up the good work.

In my opinion some objects can be really valueble because of a memory is based around that object, for example: Imagine that you were in the US army and that humvee was your patrol vehicle with 3 other buddies of yours. Those 3 buddies pass away for some reason and you get to keep that humvee. All those memories you have were reality in that humvee. To me that humvee would be priceless and I wouldn't be able to sell it to anyone. I would pass it on to my son or something and when I pass away he or maybe she can do whatever she wants with it but that humvee would have a story behind it. It sounds silly but if you think about it, some objects are just rellics of your memories. That humvee would be a memorie that still is there! but yeah in your case now matt it's a real fun vehicle and a nice offroad toy. I have a Landrover from 1969 and love it to bits!
