This time we finally start to overhaul the big engine of our historic steel ship. We exchange 50 year old coolant hoses. And have to decide if the engine can be saved.
Over the next few weeks we will continue with engine maintenance and hopefully get the engine running again.
Flying Coney is an 82ft long historic steel ship. And we bring her back to live as the beautiful sailing ship she once was. When we are done with the refit we want to sail the ocean together with you and teach traditional sailing skills.

Thanks a lot! I've always been a huge fan of Australian trucks. I mean they are the real deal and you see that they have to work, with heavy duty bull bars and the a layer of dust from the outback. We've once been to Melbourne for a sailing event and one thing I will always remember is that the guy who brought our rental boat said he's not living far away. He was talking about a 6 hour drive.

Remember, that the old engines are invariably better than new engines. Keep it going! Older engines are typically cast iron (rather than alloy) and designed to last for decades.
@FlyingConey
@FlyingConey 3 месяца назад
If we need a replacement engine I would likely pick the Cummins 855. Cummins does have a slightly better service policy than DAF. Luckyly we don't need a stage V engine. Also an option would be a Chinese engine like the Weichai WD12. But for now it looks like the DAF will be good for many years to come and it's part of the history of the ship.
@stephenburnage7687
@stephenburnage7687 3 месяца назад
@FlyingConey I agree, the vintage (in keeping with the vessel) is important but my point waa that old engines were designed and built to run 50 years or more, whereas modern engines are built to last a decade (if you are lucky). Therefore you should have a strong preference for a low reving, overbuilt, older, cast iron engine over any modern alloy block.
@mikestevens9455

Except modern engines get 50% better fuel economy with less emissions. However I might suggest John Deer as still producing great low speed diesels.

Dear Barbara and Daniäl, This DAF engine was when she was released a very reliable engine and still is but with Flying Coney this engine wasn’t maintained too well over the past years. With some love an by replacing some of the external parts the engine will be as reliable as she always was. I think your British engine engineer will check the diesel injectors piece by piece because that might be an internal problem with this engine because it didn’t run for some time. I look forward to your next vlog and send you love from the Netherlands

A very interesting episode and well edited. John is quite a character and his expertise will prove to be invaluable. Most people don't fully understand all the quirks of diesel engines and having professional eyes on it can make all the difference. In the US we have an expression, "If it isn't broken, don't fix it." meaning leave it alone if it works. Old engines can last forever if you do the servicing and pay attention. When something acts up take care of it rather than putting it off. This will really extend the life of almost any component. Overall I have high expectations for your project given your level of commitment. Thanks for sharing your adventure.

Looks good. Now, if I may suggest next step. Get some biodegradable degreaser. Spray down the engine. Let is soak for a bit and then rinse the engine down. Maybe use a garden pump sprayer to minimize the amount of water that will go in the bilge. From my own carrier as sailing as chief engineer in the Danish Merchant marine a clean engine and engine room is a must, because in a clean engine room with good lighting it becomes much easier to spot any issues and take action when it is still a minor issue of any kind. . Also check your bilge for old rags and gunk to insure free and unrestricted flow of bilge water to the bilge wells. Take care

As a man working on all kinds of engines in cars and trucks for over thirty years, I can say that this man is one of very few I would allow near my stuff with tools. Yes you need a lot of knowledge but that´s achievable to anyone. That kind of feel he seem to have is the kind only decades of experience and a lot of mechanical sympathy gives you. About your engine, IDK anything about DAF´s but I have about the same kind of engine size and age in my converted bus. It´s a 12 liter Hanomag from 1975 with over 900.000 km´s on it. And it runs like new. And I have no reason to believe a DAF would be any worse. And you really don´t want a "modern" engine with electronics. You want an absolute reliable engine that just depend och diesel, air and compression. And that´s what you got. Give that engine the love it deserves and it will outlive us all. Don´t stress it when cold, always let it gain some heat before going to sea, and never ever over rev it. Also, don´t shut it down directly after being at sea. Let it run on idle for a while (10 to 15 minutes maybe) to allow it to "calm down". Last but not least! Make sure you have reliable gauges for temps and pressures, alarms and warning lights etc in the wheelhouse. Maybe even consider a camera looking at it. It´s an unmanned engine room and you want to be able to see any smoke developing as soon as possible. Thanks for all your videos. It´s very nice to see this old ship coming back to life. Regards from Sweden.

I think you will be happy with the older engines. The are generally easier to maintain, but I suggest that you keep spare parts in your engine room shop. It is good to keep extra parts (e.g., clamps, hoses, filters, etc.) particularly in an emergency. You two are doing the right things and doing them well. Thanks for your program.

Going through something similar on our CAT D399s, to check on the overall condition and on the not too expensive checks we bore scoped and pressure tested. On an engine that old I'd definitely check and service all the heat exchanger cores. There's a good chance at least some of the injectors are worn so I'd pull those and service/replace those too, ditto with the glow pugs.

You should be able to find someone near you who can provide this Service! Your mechanic should have an idea of someone to perform the task if he is familiar with diesels and their workings! @FlyingConey
@FlyingConey 2 месяца назад
Flying Coney once had a huge engine in it. 130 liters or 8000 cubic inches. Because of this enormous engine she was in fact used as a tug boat sometimes to tow boats to England. But for most people 11.6 liters is still a relatively large engine. The ship Barbara was trained as a ship mechanic had two Wärtsilä 12ZV40/48 with 18 000hp each. Compared to that even the Cummins QSK95 is a tiny engine. But actually I'm a big fan of the Cummins 885 but I think the DAF has a little bit less fuel consumption. What's your opinion on that?

Just my opinion here. Do the minimum just to get it running first. Check it out once it's running. Then make an assessment of the engine's condition. It only has 5000 hours. The engines in my boat sat for 9 years. I changed the hoses, and belts, and filters, and one coolant pump. I refurbished all of the heat exchangers. They run great! I'll just do a valve adjustment before we go on any long trips.

Hi there, nice job, well done so far. I've been following your steps with lots of interest. Reg overall conditions of the engine: overall looks sound, no reason why not. Seals and some gaskets might get brittle and have hardened over time and will require change in the near future, actually the smoke in the exhaust will most probably be a mixture of a bit of cylinder glazing, old fuel and hardened valve stem seats. My recommendation: Use the engine as supposed to be for some 20- 50hrs, take and send an oil sample to some known oil lab, this will give you an insight on the mechanical condition, no need to pull the oilpan for that. You can run a compression test to see if the cylinders are running even and if not, most probably a valve seat job with change of valve stem seal change, would take care of that. This engine should have a live expectancy of more than 15.000hrs, so there should be a lot of life left to enjoy. Send me a message if you need help, I'll be close to Holland in about a week's time and might find a way to pass by
@FlyingConey
@FlyingConey 3 месяца назад
Usually the in-frame overhaul is scheduled at 25 000 hours and a rebuilt should be done at 50 000 hours. The gear box has oil change intervals of 1000 hours. Since we do want to convert the ship into a sailing ship we will never get to those numbers. The big goal for now was to get the engine running again without risking damage or risking a catastrophic engine failure while on the sea. Next stepp is to go to the shipyard and in autumn or winter we can give the engine a refresh. Then we can also start to send oil samples in. Good tips! Thanks!

John! My brother from a different mother! You’re doing everything I would do if I were that close! Dallas Texas it’s just a wee bit further away. I’m an old mechanic also, more with Volvo, Mercedes, Cat, and Cummins, though I dearly love the old Detroit Diesels. That sound, Straight pipe, those babies! Without a doubt, silicone hoses, and proper hose clamps are a must! Great work everyone. I like the newer format, it’s more accurate.

Hey Bart. I see what you mean, but you must be my younger brother as you have more hair than me😅. Getting this lovely old DAF running again was an absolute joy. I won't spoil part 2 of the series, but we were chasing leaks for some time😏 Barbara and Daniel are the nicest people, and I consider them very good friends. I didn't want for anything whilst I was there. In the fullness of time, I hope to return and do more to the DAF and the generators, so keep watching. Cheers Bart. John

John did a fantastic job on the engine. Have you decided if you want to keep your DAF as well? I think the 1160 is just a larger version of the engine you have in your Dutch Barge Linda.

Thank you a lot. The past days have been very very busy but we got many great informations about Flying Coneys past as a sailing ship. She sailed up north and in the Baltic Sea many times and I believe she also visited Sweden. All the best!

As long as the engine's health is good(compression, oil pressure, low oil consumption, or excessive smoke), I'd have an oil analysis done and then if that was favorable, I'd leave it alone and just do regular maintenance. Oh! and keep a log book for run times, oil/filter changes and repairs. Also, consider an air damper type emergency shutdown set up if you don't have one already. They can be expensive, but they are cheaper than a fire.

When I bought my 24m Sloffe Aak Dutch barge, I was told of the engine...if it doesn't smoke, it isn't a DAF!! ...and what your man said there, that it needs a good run is very true. A good engine of old Tech but it needs using. I have also been told many times by other skippers...You buy a ship...you work on it all the time, and then you die!! Which probably is also true. Enjoy!! Maybe see you in Lelystadt or Urk one day...

The three sayings of Dutch shipyards: Buy a boat and work till you die (Koop een boot werk je dood) 1cm of rust is just 1mm of steel. We can weld that bur first let's have a coffee.

Those are great engines and 5,000 hours isn't any hours on that motor if it runs it will run your lifetime how much do you have left lol That's how I look at things in that Perkins that is also an awesome awesome motor it will run and run just like the old Continental engines have fun out there be safe
@FlyingConey

We just figured out this week that we actually don't know the running hours of the engine. Sorry for that but we didn't knew it better and the engine hour clock said 4800... But the engine sounds great and we're talking about 100-200 hours in a year at maximum. So I guess the engine will still run for a long time.

If that was my engine after all that sending I would choose a nice etching primer followed by a quality marine paint before instaling the silicone hoses.
@FlyingConey
@FlyingConey 3 месяца назад
We will re-paint the engine in the future. However underneath the hoses it's better to don't have paint. It gives the hoses a better grip and since there is no oxygen there's no rust. For now we used a bit of weapon oil to prevent exposed metal from corroding.
