I help out a couple that are having problems getting their Volvo 940 Turbo running. After doing some tests on the Crankshaft Position Sensor we find the problem (and break the heater control valve in the process)

Mate - Here in Norway the local Volvo dealer have this "older than 10 year" discount going 24/7 where they sell Volvo OEM parts for older vehicles at a reduced prize. Please check att your place if they have the same parts offer there. This is a well known program run by Volvo - where they advertize not to replace your genuine Volvo vehicle by replacing non Volvo/OEM parts during repair - this program include brakes like rotors, pads, service kit etc everything you need to give your Volvo proper TLC and are ment to be an OEM discouont offer for the DIY'r. We all know of the longevity and the abuse/use those car can take with minor TLC, they are easy to wrench on and loved by theyre owner. Thank you for posting - a German bought sedan helping out his younger halfe brother from the same mother - this english turbo wagon. A story with a happy ending. All the best from Norway - least we forget.

Yeah, it's called olive green, it was also available on the 850T5R. The rims are Auriga's 16". Very nice cars, lots of galvanised body parts, if it's a manual it will have the M90 gbox and the dual mass flywheel. This car seems to have LPG injection. Those usually start on gasoline and automatically switch over to LPG. To achieve this a controller will deactivate the petrol injectors while activating the LPG injectors. But ofcourse without a proper crank signal it won't start reliably.

Great to see it live again. My 1996 940 SE LPT with B230FK started then turned it off a short while later and refused to start. Turned out in tank fuel pump dead. Fitted a new Bosch pump off Ebay at 201,000 miles and all good. While looking at ignition discovered the heater control valve was leaking. Bought a cheap £25 one off Ebay and fitted. For preventative maintenance, replaced crank sensor, ignition module, fuel pump relay. Old in boot. Like the CD spec estate. Mine isn't bad though. Electric windows all round, electric sunroof, AC, Was half leather, now full grey leather. Was going to fit 960 electric front seats but most seat electrics all had faults. Need to sort AC condenser seals as leaks out, so no AC. Great that your girlfriend is into Volvo's and likes being involvoed!

At first I thought it might be the LPG causing it to cut-out (could see the LPG injectors) , as they will start on petrol and switch to LPG when the engine has warmed up enough to vapourise the liquid gas. But you got it running nicely in the end.

I suggest you when testing the ignition system to assure that the ignition coil could always discharge since when there is no spark to the ground the voltage in the primary and secondary windings grows to very high values and this could burn the insulation inside the coil or the HT cables and in the worst case damage the electronics. A simple spark tester or a piece of cable with a clamp to the spark and connected to the ground could save you a lot of euros if it isn't your lucky day. Furthermore, to better test the CPS sensor (but also ignition coils, injectors and so on) I don't trust too much the ohmeter since many faulties are only visible by the analisys of the live signal. In my experience the external rubber of the cable could be great damaged but the sensor work perfectly.

I'm trying to measure / test the BDP sensor on my recently bought 940 (1996), because when starting the car with a warm engine, it takes seconds longer, and even have to touch the gas pedal briefly.. then it always starts and runs ok, also a smooth idle.. The cable and connector of the sensor look brand new, so I did not expect the sensor to be broken but: Measuring resistance between pin 2 and pin 1 gives around 190 ohms, between pin 2 and 3 gives infinite ohms (open line). So this is a broken sensor right? Or am I not measuring it correctly?

I have had a few crank sensors refuse to work when the vehicle has warmed up not so much from cold my old 740 turbo would on occasion refuse to start after a stopping after a shortish journey it drove me mad trying to find out what it was I eventually traced the problem to an injector relay that sat on its lonesome in the engine bay near the near side suspension turret it was sticking open a few quid for a relay and no more being scared to switch the engine off

@@Involvod I know. It's sad at times. The american one is unfortunatelly aweful. Turbobricks tends to be toxic at times but there are lots of nice people there too. The uk one is a bit less active because it's smaller than turbobricks, but I don't think I ever saw a single nasty dispute on the 700/900 section, which is the only one I frenquently visit.

I had 940 SE Turbo back in 1992. It was a loverly car to drive but it only had a 1.9 engine and I found it was not as good performance wise as my 1973 144DL. The 144 had the same engine but with all the new regs for injection and having a catalytic convert sapped the power of the 940. It also was not feel as stable when towing my caravan. Softer suspension. I only had it for 3 years and sold it for a 4x4. The 940/960 were good looking car but lost the performance of the older 144 and 244. I have owned 3 Volvo's over the years from 144DL, 240GLTand 940. Of the 3 car the 240GLT was best and 940 was the worst.

ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mv-9vXE80HM.html Mackan speaks about a probable weakness why the CEM in a 850/v70 is troublesome. It's placement means that water/moisture from the driver's shoes especially in wintertime (snow) disipates and then immediately finds a good nesting place - inside the CEM.... so moisture problems in that one is guaranteed.
