Thunder Child II was designed and built by Safehaven Marine in Ireland by Frank Kowalski and his team. Nick, Alex, Ben, Max and Tristan are the 5 crew members that have set themselves the task to do the London to Monaco run to raise money for Great Ormond Street hospital, gather data for fuel cell technology and hopefully set a world record.

As someone who lives in a country plagued with corruption and fraud, I can tell you that the hotel staff saw the 8000€ and saw a chance to pocket some money from you by charging for the showers

If they can afford fuelling for 8keuros why shouldn't they pay for the showers? What does a gas station and a hotel have in common? Can you imagine they can be different companies? Or do you know that delivering the fuel to the boats costs? When I'm filling up my car to the top, nobody gives anything for free. I pay for peeing or food. For me the scene and all those complains were unnecessary or just ridiculous

Excellent film, thank you very very much for taking the trouble to record your run. I followed you from day one every inch of the way until your unfortunate problem. To men of my time this run is the Everest of long distance record attempts and one I long wished to do with a team of my own but never got it together. So you are living my dream, I wish you all the very best and will lay a bet that Nic will gather you all together again in the not too distant future to break that record for vessels over 50' for the London to Monte-Carlo.

The plug that was leaking is designed to have a zinc screwed to the inside of the plug. It didn't rust through, some people will drill a telltale hole in the plug to indicate when the zinc needs to be replaced. The zinc is usually just after a pump and is to protect the impeller and pump body from corrosion. Great video, Good Luck on attempt 2 if there is one.

Such a shame you did not make it all the way-Loved the Video ! Just a thought - It would interesting to compare Virgin Atlantic Challenger to Thunder Child 2- both boats 70 foot plus Virgin Atlantic has 4000 hp and carries 16000 litres of fuel-top speed 52 knots built 1986 Thunder Child 2 8000 litres of fuel 2600 hp 54 knots I would guess Thunder Child 2 would be much lighter and more fuel efficient and better at sea ! I think Thunder Child 2 could do with black fender covers they would look good against the gold finish ! It might give the boat another knot !!!!!

honestly it makes perfect sense for you to have to pay a night fare for using the facilities. they need to be cleaned and maintained and the water heated etc. the fuel bill does not go tot he facility it goes to the fuel supplier.

Beautiful video… but I noticed that at 34kts, you were running those CATS at 86-88% load. For the longevity of those engines and to keep the correct time between overhauls, they should be running closer to 75-80% load. I know that you can run them up there in that 88% load range, but you know what they say, “with diesels, you get either horsepower or hours, but not both.” Be safe!

I used the McDonalds in La Coruna. I was working on the Oriana at the time, during a refit. I had been on the ship for 7 weeks. Started off in Bremerhaven dry dock, and then sailed with her back to Southampton. Spent Christmas on her and was due to get off at Coruna and fly back to London, just before New Year. After 7 weeks of ships food, walking round the corner I saw the golden arches of McDonalds. I swear I could hear angels singing! Also, used the McDonald’s in Mumbai. But that’s a different story.

Great with all the attention on safety. Considering the state of sailing and amount of boats at this time, this can not be overstated. I hope you'll do one of your accidentreportvideos on the colission between the sailboat and motoryacht in italy, near Elba about a week ago resaulting in loss of life for two people, once the investigation is complete. Many, many years ago, I sailed round the top of Spain to Vigo. Visibility was not too bad, but I kept my speed to under 7 knots. I was aboard my Contessa 26, it took me 14 days from Lymington to Gibraltar. Oh, the joys of a Vire 2 stroke and little wind.

That bolt that failed looks like a sacrificial anode. They are designed to fail in that way so that when the anode has fully eroded it can be replaced with a new one. If it’s not replaced the correct part the sea water will start to erode the internal components of the main engine. Good luck

Great adventure and reporting! I’d love to do something like this……perhaps one day. 8 wonder if the perfect vessel would have 2 or 3 engines as having 4 does increase the chances of a mechanical issue and increases fuel consumption. The RIB Hot Lemon that held the round Britain record had 2 engines, although nothing like the comfort you had!

amazing. I would give zed F an A for effort, gear boxes and pioneering.. I hear that name all the time. they are willing to break their stuff trying. In similar contrast I simply run a manual trans in my truck, known for lack of heavy duty, the truck broke its frame in half before it never quit,,and now at 390k american miles. The only original piece left. Gear boxes are like that. Each one is different. Awesome to tag along this legendary boat.

Sadly the Marina probably makes very little on fuel. I know petrol stations usually make little to nothing on fuel and it’s just used as a means to get people into the store. Probably very similar situation with the Marina that charged you to use the showers…no matter how much fuel you purchased.

Every marina I have ever been to charges a hefty premium (20-25%) over the local gas station. I understand they need to pay the attendant but they also buy in bulk for cheaper rates.

Mechanical installation of gearbox, like degrees or alignments can cause this to happen before you see any water leakage. Or it could be just a defective part in the gearbox. But I love your videos and Safe-haven boats.

I don't know much about immersion suits but being that baggy looks dangerous. Reminds me of a time i was wearing a wet suit that was slightly too big for me and it filled with water after i was barrelled in a huge set of waves. I nearly drowned, i was like a dead weight in the sea.

Under the UIM the Rib is a different category to us but we certainly would like to break all records. They we’re running with fuel bladders, petrol engines and set a very solid time. It would be hard to beat but not impossible.

ZF didn’t offer an extended warranty when the new owner bought the boat but interestingly CATERPILLAR did offer an extended warranty on the main engines. 🧐
