I recently found your channel and have been binge watching all of your older posts!!! You guys make me believe that I can do this as well. 5 years ago I lost my husband to cancer, he was 45. Since then I have been in a funk not knowing what to do with my life. Currently I work , come home, do things around here, sleep and get up and do it all again. You know being an adult. I have been wanting to convert either a small bus or a van and travel across the US and see my country. I was born and raised in West Virginia nad had lived my entire life in the same town until my husband passed and now I live with my Mom in Pennsylvania. After watching your videos I have actually taken more steps towards my dreams than I previously had, so thank you for all you do!! God Bless and Love you!!!!!

When Mispronounced Adventures travelled to the Arctic Circle last winter he had lots of issues due to the severe cold and wind. One thing I recall is to be able to cover the front radiator grill so that the heater could work. Look at his channel for great tips on how to prevent your engine from freezing as it's a real problem in the Arctic and not to be under estimated. Stay safe xx.

Omg Craig, please don't treat the bus as a Go Cart this winter! 🤣 We went up to Lofoten in our little car last winter and was absolutely sliding around some places, despite driving in 30-40 km/h... Have you considered bringing some chains for the wheels? It's recommended for heavier vehicles, but I also think you guys will do just fine with all this prep going on! you will have the most wonderful time 😍🫶 Also, if you're interested, let me know if you're considering driving home again through the western coast of Norway, there's so many gems there, and me and my partner would love to host you in our home! 😍 My partner is a mountain guide and can take you on some epic adventures and then I can cook som delish vegan meals! Cat litter in case you get stuck. Helps with traction on ice. 1 shovel to dig out snow if stuck. Candles and blankets in case you can't get unstuck. Surprising how much heat they can produce inside a vehicle. These are all somewhat common in all vehicles where I live in Canada. Also make sure exhaust pipe is clear of snow if you get stuck. Snow can block the exhaust from getting out and go back into the vehicle. Not trying to scare you just trying to help with a few tips for winter driving.

I'm glad you're a bit worried about the winter and I'm rooting for you!! Preparation is really gonna make a difference. Your waste pipe is gonna freeze. Get some "heat tape" to put on to unfreeze your pipes. You can also keep your water on a slow trickle when necessary. Remember your solar will be so bad because of being so far north. Insulate everything you possible can, especially floors. Maybe install some things that you can cover your windows with that are reflective and will help keep heat in. Your comfort will keep your spirits up when it's dark all the time. Don't forget lots of windshield wiper fluid and a shovel. Slushy roads are brutal on the windows. But, you will find a lot of beauty and joy in the winter. 🇨🇦
@Erin-S
@Erin-S Год назад
It's hard to say the impact that -10C and colder has on your gear. Does your bus have a block heater??? If not, get one!!!! Where I come from, they are standard. They are a thing that you plug in and it keeps your oil a bit heated so that your vehicle will start. It's not just the battery you need to think about. When it's colder than -10 we need to plug in the car so it starts nicely and doesn't cause any damage. (Though I forget from time to time and it's mostly okay). When it's colder than -30C my car flat out will not start PERIOD. I have to wait til the weather warms up. A block heater is a MUST. Driving on snowy icy roads is quite serious. You'll know when you're in it. You won't be racing anywhere hahaha. Drive like Grama's got a crockpot of chili on your lap and she's in her white dress. Do not run your diesel low on fuel when it's cold. This is damaging to your vehicle. Also, diesel needs to warm up before you drive it when it's cold. Like foreplay... you can't just turn her on and go. When you're running in and out of somewhere quick (and it's -15C or colder) leave her on. It's better than turning her off and then immediately turning her back on. So many sex jokes, not enough time. I am really ROOTING FOR YOU! I am from Northern Canada and have lived here my whole life. And still, I do not live in the Arctic Circle. I KNOW people will be SOOO good to you and will take care of you. I KNOW you will experience something beautiful and magical and fabulous. I see you guys. You can do hard things and it'll be so worth it.
@lexlovesthebeach
@lexlovesthebeach Год назад
Yes to all of this⬆⬆!! Get as much stuff for those windows as you can - they will be brutal otherwise. Also a secondary source of heat (maybe 3rd too). Heat tapes for all your pipes are a MUST as they WILL freeze. Also does Custard have a block heater that you can plug in to start it in the morning??? When it's cold you will need this and maybe Ether as it's a diesel, right? This will help start on cold, cold mornings.

Hi guys, we spent 3 months in Scandinavia this year which included 7 weeks in Norway, you will love it. I'm so jealous you are going in the winter. I can understand your worry about battery failure. Have you considered installing a wood burner? That way if you have no heating, lighting or you break down you will always have access to heat and potentially you can cook on top of the fire with a cook pot. So you won't freeze or starve and ofcourse you will have access to endless wood to burn. The other thing that might help is to have a nudge bar fitted to help protect the bus from animal strikes. Have you checked with the battery manufacture what tempreture your batterys will work in? Can't wait to see the videos.
@somethingfromk6816
@somethingfromk6816 Год назад
Northern nordics in winter can be pretty harsh. Counting on one heat source is dangerous. A small wood burner would give you a great back up in case of emergency. At very least you should invest in sleeping bags rated for extreme cold.

When we start our Mercedes Sprinter busses on Denmark during the winter, we make sure to keep the furnace running, so the engine isn't cold. Just program it to run at least a few hours before you want to start. Starts a charm. Driving it can be a bit of a challenge. Not front wheel drive. Just steer out of your troubles, foot of speeder. Re the condensation. Just keep your AC running all the time plus your heating. AC pulls the damp out and the heat dries it up. Don't worry about it. If you do have condensation just crank up the heat and crack the windows slightly till th eplace is dried up. I drive busses with 50+ people. Using this technique all will be good.

Get a portable Wind Turbine (or 2!) for extra electrical power! You can put a mount on the side or top of the bus and just pop it up when you're parked. The sun's not always out but the wind blows a lot, especially in cold areas, and will supplement your power needs in bad weather and during the night as you sleep! Even a small portable backup generator from Honda, Westinghouse, A-iPower, or others can give you extra security, run for 12+ hours, are as quiet as 52 decibels, and small enough to store inside. And if it's a gasoline/petrol instead of diesel you don't have to worry about the fuel supply gelling up in cold weather (which is something you should look into for your van and add a tank/line heater to prevent your fuel supply from gelling in the cold weather and stranding you!)

Hopefully you have a cover for your bike. Snow, slush, dirt etc will coat the back of the van especially driving in a snowstorm. This can be made worse by the sand mix that is sprayed from the snowplows ( here in Canada the snowplows often have a load sand mix that is spread on the roads. The sand mix usually contains a salt type of mixture that melts the ice on the road). Also make sure you have windshield washer fluid that is good to -45c. Finally a good strong snowbrush that has a scraper on one end. Looking forward to your adventure. 🚌🚙🌬❄️

No doubt you’ll see the northern lights! In the past week we experienced -17°C in our van driving through Sweden and… don’t underestimate this! Any humidity will just freeze inside the bus, even our dog’s water bowl, which is inside, where the heater is on. Our grey water tank and pipe have been frozen for the last week and the wiper liquid/coolant in the engine has to be up for at least -20/30°! All things that a little antifreeze and preparation can prevent 😁 which we didn’t have or do 🙈 have fun guys and please drive and stay safe! You’ll love this experience! Greetings @anothervanstory

aaargh so excited! About the animal strikes, some important things to know: 1. be extra watchful of the roads edges at dusk or dawn as that is when the woodland creatures like to come out and play. 2. Deer/reindeer/wild boar will ALWAYS have friends behind it so wait them out. 3. If the worst happens and you do hit an animal, you are required by law to mark where the animal ran off to (with tape or the like) and call 112 to report the incident. You may be fined handsomly if you do not. This is in Sweden anyway!

I recommend getting an emergency GPS device that's insulated from the cold. That way if you're.... Let's say in the far north of Finnish Lapland and 12 hours drive from civilization, you can activate it and get help. The good thing about Nordic countries is that if you're in distress they will send a helicopter to your GPS emergency location. It's worth spending the money for this. I would seriously consider it.

In Canada we have block heaters so our engines start in the mornings after frigid night temperatures. They aren't too dear, but you would have to be able to plug one in....

Custard is looking pretty sharp. Not too sure if this was mentioned before but pack a shovel and make sure your engine fluids can go down to -40C. Think windshield fluid and antifreeze. Windshield ice scrapper to clean the windows from snow and ice. Keeping some of your window covered will help to keep the heat inside Custard. Found you a few weeks ago from Eamon and Bec. Just finished binge watching Custard build to now. I love your energy and how honest you are with talking about your mental health. Take care lads, stay safe and looking forward to your next adventure. Here’s hoping the night sky will glow for you in the north. 🇨🇦

I live in a VW bus with windows all around in Northern California. No where near as cold in winter as Scandinavia! I would advise swapping out your curtains - make them thicker (winter curtains!) using a thicker fabric and keeping them as close to the window as possible. Mine are made of dropcloth canvas folded over a heavy duty wire that runs along the wall above the window. If I was going to snow-land, I would put a layer of thin polyester fiber fill between the two layers of canvas. The glass in the windows is going to be very cold, and you are going to want a warm layer between you and the glass. I keep rolled blankets along the edge of the bed up against the bottom edge of the glass. I also have about 15 blankets in my bus! Two comforters, two wool, two afghans, one fleece, and the blankets on my bed. Or you might want to get below freezing rated sleeping bags. I am comfortable down into the high-20s (American) but that's only one or two nights every year or two that it gets that cold where I am. I one time, and one time only, had one of my windows crackle and fall out in pieces because of the differentiation in temperatures between inside and outside. Only once. I really doubt that happens often, but it's another reason for insulated curtains. Have a back up for everything. And insulate everything as much as possible! Including exposed tanks and pipes! I know you guys will be smart about your travels in the snow!

Guys... you folk really should install a small woodburner onboard. I live here in Latvia and the temps are already down minus, day and night...and snow is building up fast. Also, when you get into Scandinavia I'd strongly suggest investing in a set of studded winter tyres or you'll be all over the place. Not painting a negative picture for you, but rather, just being realistic and relaying years of experience dealing with -30 degree sub-Arctic winters. Stay safe and warm. 👍👍

You won't get any sola power up in the north. The sun is already going down after 2 hours . But when you get far north no sun .. inland will get down to -30c .. you will need insulated covers for your windows .. your electric bike on the back could end up with a ruined battery out in the cold ... get a battery booster for your van your engine battery might have problems with the cold .. spiked winter wheels should be a must .. at the moment it's just ice on our roads .. no grip with normal tyres.. light bar is a good idea but when it's snowing you can get reflection back in your eyes . Led separate lights could be better as you can adjust them both going towards the sides of the roads so you can see the animals ... drive safe ..

To scare was not the intention! Awarenes of winterconditions och winterdriving is. BUT since your favourite country, as is ours😉 is Iceland you have the knowledge. The differense is the size of transportation 🤣. As many allready have said cover the windows to keep the warmth inside. In Sweden we use "isskrapa" to clear the windows from frost, mostly on the outside before starting a drive BUT sometimes on the inside of the windows due to condensation thats frozen on the inside. Get one of those at the first gasstation upon arrival! It will not due with just som random thinng thats straight, mostly used us a empty cd casing🤣 when we do not find our icescraper when the first frost hits. Second tip, but this you probably already have after the diesel insident. Keep a plastic or metalic spare diesel can 10-20litres with you. Both in Norway as here in Sweden the gasstations can be faaaaar betwen. Like 100 km or more. And last but not least. IF, god forbid, you have a breakdown and has to wait for help. Keep "värmeljus" aka tea lights and matches/lighter together in a bag. We have them in the glovecompartement in the car because the can generate enough heat to be comfortable in while waiting. It could work in Custard too...but most likely you will not need them 👍 YOU'VE GOT THIS!! Welcome to Sweden and Scandinavia Välkommna till Sverige och Skandinavien

And another to remember is that when you are ready to leave for the north....nothing is impossible. If you are too cold, go inside, get warm and readjust. Everything is possible, maybe just not how you think it will go. I always marvel at the things you have conquered>Don't wrinkle your soul!🌞 🕉 ....and I would love the tagine. If you are in the Colorado mountains, you can plug in here! Hit me up!

I've survived -9F regularly over the last 6 years in my bus... You must have 3 heat sources lined up. In my case, I've got regular Shore Power/Mini-Split, Propane wall furnace, and Diesel heater. Any one of the 3 can go out at any time, but I'm prepared. It's nice knowing in the negative temps, I can maintain 70-75F. Edit: going into my 7th. winter now.

I'm probably the 'nth person who points this out, but I see running water from that drainpipe and I immediately thought that's going to freeze, and won't thaw again that quick. Ice is notorious for expanding and.. well.. Perhaps think about a drain-extender in some capacity to get the water out and away that's attachable/removable? Though I still worry you'll find that the drain will freeze >.> On a positive note! Loving all the refurbishing and upgrades and planning going into this! You are doing a 10000000-times better job than most mobile-home tourists! And I am so looking forward to see how your adventure goes :D

Great work on winterising the van guys, looking forward to following your journey. You’ve probably already thought of this but just in case you haven’t, I would definitely take a spare diesel heater or even setup a second one, also you could setup a backup power feed from the van starter battery just in case your leisure batteries go flat or won’t charge and that way you can start the van and have the diesel heater running to warm up and charge your leisure batteries. Good luck, hope it’s amazing up there.
