Can We Talk About It? - A Short Documentary about Racism in Denmark

Racism is a global issue that affects people every day around the world. It has many faces and is not always obvious. Even in a country like Denmark, which is famous for its friendliness and love for togetherness, people are experiencing hate based on their skin colour or ethnicity.
In "Can We Talk About It?" we documented Djavan Jami, a singer-songwriter based in Copenhagen, and Ellie Jokar, a Persian actress, comedian and rapper, who discuss how racism can be seen in different facets of life in Denmark. Their work within the community facilitates the conversation about this uncomfortable and inconvenient reality.
Please be aware of a respectful and constructive conversation. Thank you.

I decided to Google "denmark racism" after a couple of incidents I encountered while I'm in Denmark for holiday with my family, then I found this video to confirm my question, are Danish racist? I don't think Danish knows they are behave racist, and they are doing it. We are Asian, and several occasions we are treated differently and rudely because we are not Danish white skin. Im surprised actually. So.. I'm not coming back to Denmark ever and not recommending anyone to visit.

I remmeber once, me and my arab family in airport, we were standing up in a check-in bags, we were in the first line and behind us there's danish, american and two indians, there's two bars in front of us, the crew mate open the first bar for us but the line to the check-in was long and like a maze, while they open the second bar for others which the line was straight and they get to the check-in before us while me and my familly were still struggling with our suitcases, I will never forget that moment.

Funny how we went from racism being segregation, hatecrimes and genocide to "where are you from?" If you find offense in this, then you obviously aren't proud of your herritage, but that is not my problem.. I will still ask where you are from, because I am interested and I wanna get to know you.

I'm from Denmark, but living abroad. This is the first time I see this documentary. It seemed like just a trailer for what could have been a really good documentary. They hardly got into the issues before the doc was over. Next time, make it a 2-hour doc, or even a series. These are important issues and they deserve to be discussed in depth and at length.

They did an awesome job of starting a discussion, and I think criticism of Danish racism from an ethnic Dane would be much more impactful because it might be heard properly by a wider audience.
@pjacobsen1000
@pjacobsen1000 21 день назад
@@Luluthebloom That's a good point, but they did have one ethnic Dane: the researcher. Apart from that, they didn't interview any ethnic Danes. It probably wouldn't be hard to find one (in Denmark), but it's my impression that they specifically wanted to listen to ethnic minorities voicing their experiences of being treated differently. Another thing I noticed that I thought was strange was that all the people of East Asian background were featured anonymously, as if they have extra reason to be worried about being identified. Maybe it's just a coincidence.

This is so important! Thank you for spreading the awareness of the racism and xenophobia in Denmark. From my short time here, I have witnessed friends and classmates experience it on a regular basis. It's the where are you really from question that bothers those who are born in a country and speak that language fluently. Say your parents were from japan and the immigrated to Sweden and had you in Sweden. You would not be considered Swedish by the Swedish population. You may act like a swed talk like one. but at the end of the day you look different and that bothers people. Now Say your parents are immigrated from Canada and are blonde. You are born blonde and raised in that culture you will be considered Swedish unless you go out of the way to say you're Canadian. I think with most people were tired of pretending like racism doesn't it does. Its naturally human to fear what seems different to you. But thats not to say its okay. Agree or disagree i don't care people opinions are often deep rooted. and hard to change. Its only when a community such as 1950's Germany was forced to change that It did and I think the same can be said about Denmark.

In high school, one of my friends (second-gen immigrant from middle east) would greet me in the morning with "Goodmorning white trash!" and I would respond would "Sup, perker!". Then we would laugh a bit and smoke a cigarette together before heading in. The words we both used were racist and demeaning, but neither of us used them with that intention - we were just making friendly fun of each other. In fact, the fact that we could do that, showed that I considered him a normal danish dude and not "an outsider that needs to be taken special care of".
