Can We Warranty This Tuned VW Golf? TD1 

My GTI is similarly modded to your GTI. Cobb AP with EQT tune, downpipe, FMIC, intake, etc. I took nothing off and didn't waste my time uninstalling the tune. They can still see that the car has been tuned even if you flash it back to stock. The thermostat/water pump leaking issue is so common that there is no way that they can justify blaming any mods. The dealer didn't say a word to me about my mods and the VW tech even complimented my GTI when I picked up my car. It had approx. 19,000 miles at the time the warranty work was done. Now, if you blow your engine or turbo, that's a whole different story.

Had my engine and turbo replaced back in 2018. Had a catless downpipe and aftermarket intake at the time and they were kind enough to put those on the new block. $15k sans my CPO deductible for parts and labor courtesy of VWoA

It highly depends on the dealer. This dealership seemed to be nice to you. Most VW dealers aren't with TD1 cars

Yea this is a super common issue I had my carbon cleaning done , fuel injectors,& water pump and nice build I’ve got a similar build with Sneeky tuned , cts downpipe , charge pipe , fmic , apr intake , sai, rs3 coil packs , mbrp catback

yes we get it you took your car with all your mods to the dealership. but some ppl worry about things like this great vid/information 👍🏻

As a VW dealer tech, just be honest with me whether the cars tuned or not and I’ll try my best to help you out. If you don’t say anything, and I scan the car without knowing it’s tuned, there’s a chance it’ll get td1’d without intent.

Taken it for a service at vw with a stage 1 tune with no problems he just said It could be a problem if they have to do updates

Had a coolant leak that led near the oil pan, turned out to be a super loose coolant line.

Most dealers would cover this even if you dropped it off with the AP sitting there on the e85 tune given that its a very known issue and VW wouldnt bat an eye about it. If you came in with a blown turbo trying to waranty that, they'll both tell you to kick rocks.

Awesome video, glad to know the car can run on stock tune okay and that the dealer was able to do warranty work. I have a 2019 and need to bring it in to the dealer for an emissions ecu update (CA DMV won’t let me renew my reg until it’s done). Had some fear flashing back and driving on a stock tune.

Dealerships can always check if the car was flashed back to stock or previously tuned..the only tune they can’t tell is with a JB4 piggy back...glad they didn’t void your warranty though!! A lot of dealerships won’t be cool about modified cars

My car is obviously moddified including an ECU and TCU tune. I took it in for a leaking thermostat housing, leaking cam seal and leaking valve cover gasket. All covered under the 60k Powertrain Warranty. I think they only care if a major part blows up like the motor.

What dealership did you take it to? I need a valve cover gasket done and my car is stage 2. Maybe I can try my luck here

I blew my motor / turbo unistalled my Cobb accessport parted out my car brought it in brand new motor and turbo put in under warranty

Working at a dealership taught me that it’s only voided in association with the modification. Let’s take it a step further and say you did upgraded radiator. Because it’s related to the cooling system, they might have an issue claiming it under warranty. The best part is, because it’s a widely known issue it’ll be resolved no matter what. Let’s say you had an broken valve spring within warranty mileage… that’s a problem because the tune fucks with A/F and all these other values to make more power. They will blame the tune and void warranty work. I’m still kinda stuck with my wife’s Tiguan though. We got an APR stage1 93oct file done at a Dealership…. I still wonder if that’ll cover internal engine component related failures under warranty. Regardless the fact I do my 5k oil changes and some services at the dealer just to kind show I’m not neglecting it. It’s very well taken care of :)

I was recently at a dealership and they mentioned that stage one tunes will not void warranty.

Mods are a tricky thing. If your vehicle is still covered by the warranty, a mod may screw up your warranties. I drive a 2019 GTI S, no mods, why would you need anything faster ? Just drop it into sport mode, and hold on !!! Vrooom…. Thanks, RickGTI

Going to VW GG tomorrow for faulty rear O2 sensor, will see if they cover it (2017 GTI, took off cts downpipe and flashed back from eqt stage 1 to stock)

I just had my water pump done their also turning into a problem on the mk 7.5 my Vw mechanic said

I know if ur in southern California galpin vw is mod friendly

is it not bad to drive the car modified without a proper tune? especially with a downpipe and even more so a bigger turbo?

What tune did you drive the car on in its stock setting since you still had an is38 on there, could you still run an is20 map?
