I have ALWAYS preferred to write by hand, no matter what I'm doing. Whenever I type on a keyboard, things just don't stick into my brain as well as they do when I write it out slowly by hand. Many studies have also shown that you retain more when you write by hand.

About writing, I like doing dictation exercice (by hand) whereas I am focusing on listening comprehension, because: - I can focus more on listening; - It improves my spelling; - I can visualise what I heard, so that I can understand better the sentence's structure. The dictation exercice works the three ways of memorizing: vision, audition, and kinesthetic, so it is very efficient to me.

For studying, writing by hand is the appropriate tool. Yes, it's slow. For speed, learn to touch-type on a comfortable keyboard (with practice you can output faster than speaking this way). But study is not about output speed, it's more like absorption. And to absorb something you need a slower, deliberate process sometimes.

I have been studying Japanese for years now and I can read a lot of Kanji by now, but I have never had to write by hand. At the moment I am studying abroad and last semester I took part in a course about practising writing by hand. I felt like a beginner again because I wasn't able to write even easy Kanji from memory. I had to cram a lot but in the end I was able to at least remember enough Kanji to sit an exam about a passage of text we had to learn by heart. It is such a good feeling to be able to write out a sentence like a native would and I have the impression it helped me understand the passage on a deeper level because I had to write it out many times in order to remember. This way I spent a lot more time with the phrases and I could think about the radicals and compounds a lot more than I normally do when rapidly reading through a text and just recognizing the overall meaning. I will definitely incorporate this into my study routine from now on.

I've always found that writing by hand helps me memorize things to the point that I don't even need to go back and review them. In fact, we had a history teacher back in middle school that always gave us very nieche questions in exams that were covered nowhere in the textbooks. I always had that random information in the back page of my notebook, words on top of words, making it impossible to read anything, but I had written them once so I could remember.

I’ve found whenever I do my errands, from shopping , to groceries, to tasks around the house, I have always preferred to write it down on a notepad. When it’s written down, I can immediately look at it and mark a task or item, write a note next to it, etc. I already think I spend too much time on my phone, so it’s nice having a simple notepad to refer to things and not stare at a screen. I thoroughly enjoy your content and LingQ along with a few other channels and apps. Merry Christmas and happy holidays!

So glad you decided to comment on this. I actually find myself doing this quite a bit using Google translate or itranslate as a tool. it does help considerably I think it's important as Steve said in the video to practice by hand but to do it in a way that makes sense. though I couldn't agree more that I hardly write in my spoken language (English) in fact, the last time I even wrote anything was an update letter sent to a bank with all my information on it. but that was the first time I actually had to write anything in a longtime. nowadays as Steve said again in the video everything is done online by device or both. So it's very seldom required to ever have to write but am closely following Steve and recommend anyone learning a language to also follow Steve as he gives out the most useful tips and suggestions on how to pick it up in a way that you can learn it better. And so far just about everything he's said has come into frame. And this I know firsthand cause I'm studying Spanish and often find myself reciting his helpful advice and feedback one tip for example he's suggested surrounding yourself with the language. embellishing in it and after studying it for so long am actually beginning to understand words spoken in the language. So everything he says virtually goes hand and hand with everything I picked up and am actually beginning to understand it. Big shout out to Steve for his insightful feedback. So much of what he's had to say has helped a lot in the process and can't thank him enough for the videos. They're 👍🏽a great help 😎

Great subject for discussion, Steve. Writing by hand is definitely beneficial learning a language. Fortunately, when I was learning languages about twenty years ago, computers were still fairly primitive, so handwriting was par for the course for Greek, Latin, Sanskrit and Old Norse, since non-English fonts were more difficult to use, on the one hand, and on the other hand, the academics, who had to mark the papers, were just as comfortable marking hand written papers. Writing by hand permits one to take time to get things right in orthography and composition, the shape of the letters, if they differ from English, the thoughtfulness used in sentence structure and grammatical constructions. Whether the brain better remembers spelling, exempli gratia, if the word is hand written I don't know, but it would seem likely, given time spent handwriting forms and the cnstant re-reading done in the process. Anyway, I'm new.to your great channel and it's very enjoyable. Keep up the good work, John

My experiencie: I was learning arabic last year for a couple of months and then I had to stop for job and time matters. I've started back again this year, but this time I'm trying to write it by hand every word I learn. It´s obviously slower but now I can really read arabic and I make less mistakes than I used to before not writing anything down. If you can, I encourage you to try it out and you will see a huge difference. Even more if the language you learn is not based upon the same alphabet you already know, as it´s in this case of my own from spanish to arabic.

If I translate your words freely, then what you are saying is that when acquiring vocab is the first priority, then writing takes a second place. From this I deduce that once vocab is at a very acceptable level and you really need to improve your output, writing is actually one of the tools besides speaking. Also, I find that writing words is very confronting when one discovers that a word- image that has been in mind for all that time is partially or in whole wrong i.e. the word is spelt differently. In my personal experience, I find that word-image helps consolidate words that I know but maybe not as well as I think. Writing actually improves understanding where words sound alike but are written differently. Engraining the right spelling helps me be more confident. Well, that is my view. Thank you very much for the video!

Yesterday was the first day that I spent time writing out words and phrases in Russian. I felt it was going to be a game-changer as I did it, then I came across this and other related videos. It makes perfect sense though...this is how we teach children how to write and read. Writing by hand involves all different parts of language learning: reading, writing, speaking as we write and listening as we say each word out loud as we write out them on the paper.

As a beginner in Spanish I love to copy graded readers onto blank printer paper. I find that the process of looking back & forth builds up my memory, as I slowly graduate from copying a single word, to multiple words, to phrases. I also use a pencil which, just as with teaching math with chalk, forces me to go more slowly and with greater deliberation. I think it's a wonderful practice.

I really never write by hand and try to do all my learning digital, but going forward I might consider doing some handwriting again. I can imagine the use of it, and it's different to come up with stuff on paper than in front of a screen. Especially if we want to do some focused work without getting interrupted it's a great thing, I think. Probably this can be combined in a very good way with some Assimil learning.

It already does it with words that you lingqed and appeared more than once in the texts you're reading. I mean, when I'm reviewing, the questions of the "fill the blank space" type are sentences and it doesn't always repeat the sentence where I first lingqed that word. The problem with NEW sentences would be that the word may have a different meaning in those sentences. But yes, you could have a "show me the sentences that include this word that I lingqed".

@ 4:15- I get you Steve! I can't read Russian cursive very well at all, and my writing in Russian is kinda a mix of print and cursive-ish. To be fair, so is my writing in English. I do write by hand sometimes in Russian, and I've noticed that it helps me with verb conjugations and cases. In university, I did a lot of typing in Spanish and English, but not so much handwriting. I mostly had to type reports and research papers, so of course I did all of those on a computer. My next language is gonna be Japanese, and my goal is to be able to read and write hiragana and katakana, as well as develop some basic conversation skills. Writing kanji might be too big a goal for me now, although I can recognize some kanji in the names of Japanese cities (I'm an American who currently lives in Japan, although my living situation doesn't really require me to know much Japanese). I really enjoy your channel Steve, and you're an inspiration to an aspiring polyglot like myself!

The language I’m studying is Chinese. Writing would be very beneficial to me, but I’m not very good at remembering the strokes, maybe also because I’m not constant enough, anyway apart from learning Chinese characters, I would like to use writing as an alternative to speaking, but writing pinyin is not something I wanna do, so I may resort to typing at the computer, I’d still have to recognize characters that way.

Matching pairs is forgiving and fast. That is its strength. The pairs and the sentence completion at LingQ, unlike at duolingo, come from content of interest to you that you have chosen. Writing by hand doesn't help one learn faster, but the language will tend to stick that way. I started learning French in 1988 and I didn't really have a choice but to write by hand. Nowadays, however, I prefer to type instead of write by hand. I started learning Russian in 1996 and I learned how to write out the alphabet, including cursive letters. Nowadays, I think even the Chinese will use pinyin to type on their phones, and then what they write will show up in hanzi. Even so, it would be best to learn how to write out those characters by hand.
