Theoretically its POSSIBLE to beat the whole game with the whetstone only but the question is how long can you go without killing yourself from pain it's about the mental battle more than everything
There are some bosses that have hurtboxes that might be unreachable but there are some potential workarounds. But yeah, the mental pain of going through with this challenge is there too
13:03 I absolutely love the random subscribe that popped up, confused me at first but the way he was parrying it just perfectly was amazing. I appreciate the unique way of getting the “please subscribe” message across. You’re a great youtuber, thanks for this video it’s amazing dedication.
Thanks! I was so worried that I kept the subscribe up for too long so I'm really happy to hear you liked it. It wouldn't have made much sense to disappear sooner imo unless that phase was a lot longer
Honestly don’t worry about it, I love all your jokes and while timing can be everything I wouldn’t worry, you definitely deserve more subscribers though!
This video literally made me realize that I made the HB fight much harder for myself than it needed to be (my main problem was the "unpredictable" UFO's).
I had the same problem with Hilda-burg. The only reason I had problems with the ufos is because of the stars, if those were gone, those ufo would’ve been easy to predict, since the color determines their attack pattern.
Just got an s-rank on her too. God she was a hard fight. Anyway here's my opinion on what makes each Isle 1 boss hard to s-rank. Root pack- faster attacks, in particular ollie onion guy. Goopy le grande-ima be honest, probably faster attacks but I found him still really easy. Cagney carnation- why won't he stop shooting so many seed pellets, why is the parryable one on the other side of the screen, why is he doing that cover half the screen when a blue boomerang fan thing is hurtling towards me on the other side? Ribby and croaks- this was about the same difficulty as cagney, but I beat it faster. Granted the only issue was timing and waiting for the coins to stop shooting. Hilda burg. I hope this boss goes up in flames like the hindenburg, as this was hell. I used ms chalice for the latter 3 bosses so that made it easier since an extra hit point but why oh why would I get the genemi spinny circle with TWO green things shooting at me? Why would I somehow make it to the last phase and get hit twice just before a knockout? I'm no barely Alec in skill but I will respect anyone who can beat hilda burg and get an s-rank. I literally did Dr kahl's robot on expert and won in 2 tries (used health parry ring and finished in 2 minutes 59 seconds) which was easier than all of hilda burg. I just noticed you said hildeburg and I'm too lazy to edit so sorry if I got it wrong.
I feel like the confusion with whetstone is the term first parry. Most I’ve seen, myself included assumed it only lets you parry enemies one time a stage
I love how you made the intro and paired it with the rest of the video but I was hoping you would talk about how the NOT funny crashed your stream so you could use it as a motivator for beating them for the video and I have a tip for the video when you put parts of your practice runs or in the video you should put demo in the corner of the screen like what gamechamp3000 does so people know it is from one of your practice runs (I know you put small text in the corner telling people that the part of the video is using you practice run footage but it is a a bit to small and disappears after awhile)
Thanks, I'm glad you liked the intro! Both of your ideas could definitely improve the video. I initially scripted the not funny frogs part to include Gabe pretending to be Ribby and Croaks in chat but couldn't do it since youtube uses updated names and profile pictures in past stream chats. When I cut that, I didn't replace it with anything so the stream crash could have been a good replacement. I've done things like how gamechamp does it where I put demo or demonstration but I felt it would be more distracting pointing out practice runs since most attempts weren't practice runs anyway and all that matters is that I beat one run legitimately. But there's probably a good middle ground between what I did and what you suggest. I'll try to improve it next video for sure!
A few months back I actually started this challnenge myself, it was quite a fun time. I absolutely enjoyed it. Despite how difficult it was, I did come out on top and suceed in this challenge. However I did allow Super Arts and only Super Arts as well as the WhetStone. The only reason I made an exception for the Super Arts was because I believed the WhetStone wasn't capable of hitting ariel bosses. (Kinda in a way that the Smoke Charm does nothing in Ariel Bosses. I thought it would be like that)
Actually, in flying levels I still use smoke bomb. Upon going into minimode it teleports you a bit further into the direction you travel in. People may think it does nothing, but it does give you that few i frames.
How have I S Ranked and P Ranked the entire game yet still had no idea you get extra I Frames in the air from Smoke Bomb. I would always use Coffee as it seemed to be the only useful charm for air stages.
If you end up softlocked behind a boss by sheer difficulty, you should consider getting the divine relic. It has the effect of the whetstone, and even with the smoke bomb effect being irrelevant because of no dashing, it also has the effect of gaining health for parries.
@@egon3705 The Root Pack doesn't have anything to parry during the last phase so you can't get a whetstone hit in since it activates after a certain amount of parries. You also can't upgrade cursed relic that way since each boss can only contribute to upgrading it once
So I’ve never used whetstone because what I ASSUMED it was is you parry a pink projectile and if summons a super strong axe that hits the boss and after that you NEVER summon another axe and NEVER get damage again from parries. Well, guess I was wrong.
@@BarelyAlec Yeah it would make the run impossible. That’s why I was originally confused on why you were doing this. It was just me misunderstanding whetstone cause I have literally never used it.
I hate myself so I put myself through this and I beat the root pack and goopy(hopefully Cagney soon)so statistically someone did watch this and decide it’s not pure torture
This video didn’t feel like it was an hour long… I saw the duration, knew I probably wouldn’t make it through, and was surprised to see the end. This is a mark of quality work
Personally I think single heart charm is the worst one especially when the twin heart charm & heart restoration charm exist axe charm can be kinda usefull as a defacto double jump or self defence on air plane levels. I think that they should make it so you can actually use the axe ability more times in the air the more cards you have such as having 2 cards can allow you to axe 3 times or having 5 cards can allow you to do 6 axe parrys. Edit: I’m just talking about the charms in general not the charms in the challenge and had a few thoughts on a small buff to wheelstone.
It would be really interesting if more cards meant more Whetstone hits! I like that idea as it would also tie in with how Whetstone doesn't even give cards for dealing damage for some reason
I mean twin heart has a 10% damage reduction, which is a bit more impactful then the 5% damage reduction heart gives. Heart ring also has the downside of the first six parrys not giving super meter, which is an important thing to consider.
@@bestaround3323 1, the 10% reduction can depend on the weapons your using. 2, the heart ring only does that for the 1st 3rd and 6th. 3. Parrying isn’t the only way to build cards.
51:29 Or perhaps "If I'm a wimp, what does that make you?" Also, if I was in charge of Cuphead's development, I'd buff Whetstone to either have the damage on all parries, not just the first, or deal way more damage. Or both
@@BarelyAlec Or maybe you can bounce from enemy to enemy, but can only hit each enemy once until you land, perhaps indicated by a pink outline when you’re able to hit them with the parry
I am a huge fan of challenge runs. I love watching people do them and I love doing (albeit a bit easier ones) them. Out of everything i've seen, this is by far the hardest one. Congrats. I could not imagine the willpower and dedication needed to get through this. The Beppi fight is legendary. Great work!
@@BarelyAlec But seriously dude. I've seen some crazy Terraria and Soulsborne runs that push people to the limit of human skill. This trumps them all. Definetly the most skilled challenge run content creator I've seen.
Loving this spike in Cuphead challenge videos lately amazing video friend, any cuphead player knows doing the tiniest challenge can make this game hell and this is one the extreme examples thanks for going through hell for great content 🙏
I would suggest a different title for the part 2 as the same as the streams are to apply to a larger audience for click-through-rate than just those who know cuphead well, since things like whetstone are things "that people don't even know exist" 11:52 and non-players (such as I) will not understand inkwell 1, but do tend to watch things like part 1 or whatever, hence why I watched the streams just to see a challenge run despite never playing or watching the game.
This is an amazingly well made video for such a relatively unknown RU-vidr. I genuinely didn't realize it was an hour long until I was almost finished with it. Very dedicated to the challenge, comedy went well, all the good stuff. One thing I would like to point out, though. There were a few sections that felt like they dragged on a little bit more than they should, mainly "final attempt" segments. This can easily be fixed by simply trimming them down. Also, 3 minutes of silent intro was *maybe* a tad much, though I did enjoy the parody with the paint drawings lol Overall, though, this doesn't detract from the experience too much at all, and the problems aren't that hard to fix. Good job on the video (and the challenge!), definitely earned a like and a sub :)
Thanks I appreciate the praise and the criticism! I wasn't sure how long to make the final attempt segments since I wanted to include my reaction to beating the bosses but also wanted to show some of the fight. I'll keep your comment in mind for the next parts. I think you're right about the intro being a bit too long as well
@@BarelyAlec people are only saying because it’s so god damn true! It’s hard to do a challenge like this, harder to film doing it, harder to edit it so that it’s cohesive, well paced, and not too long, and harder still to make it entertaining after all of that. GGs
You'd have to be a madman or a masochist to tack on even more challenges to an already hellish whetstone only run -you could also be both- (Also you're channel is an absolute gold mine of good content. Happy I got one of your videos reccomended to me)
Ah, another fellow cuphead player who puts his skills to the max, congratulations, brother! I may be a pro at cuphead, but I will never be as good as you for years!
I’m sad RU-vid didn’t recommend me this video sooner, like wow, that’s dedication for something so time consuming and difficult to do you can’t help but love it
They should fr add a “W” rank for whetstone💀💀 and if fucking somehow you beat all of the bosses with whetstone only, you get like an axe weapon or sum lol
I watched this for the second time since when it came out, it's such a joy! I love the skill, the definitely very good jokes, and the commentary. Legendary video.
Thanks, I really appreciate that! I think one of the best compliments a youtube can get is that someone enjoyed a video enough to rewatch it. The other ones don't hurt either ;)
Putting root pack in easy after spending several minutes documenting the massive struggle they are really set the tone for the video. This is amazing though!
Bug Fables music is really really good and underrated like the game. I liked finding a way to get the first 12 coins too. It adds an extra layer to the challenge!
This video is a masterpiece. From the astonishing commentary to the effort put into every. single. attempt. in the game which can take over 35 minutes is just absolutely amazing and entertaining. Video isn't even finished and I already subscribed to this channel. I hope your channel succeeds more and you get more than a million views on a video someday. Absolutely amazing channel, will continue to watch, 10 out of 5 stars.
Dude you are SO underrated I found your channel through playing Mario + Rabbids damageless and was hooked onto your channel since first time being on a channel before they get too popular to keep up with the comments on thier videos lol. You're really good at video games dude. I can't wait to see your channel explode in popularity you deserve it! (Also if you ever run out of ideas you can try beating Sonic Mania without walking only being allowed to spindash, jump while spin dashing, and I'll also allow using the poles in flying battery zone)
Thank you so much! I'm trying my best to keep up with comments. I'll consider your suggestion but I'm nowhere close to running out of ideas right now lol
@@BarelyAlec Yeah that's just for the far future and I have not seen someone do it with Sonic Mania yet lol. I'll be sure this video to share with some of my friends that might be interested in your content so you can get some recognition for your suffering lol.
Trying to beat Cuphead with only whetstone is like going melee only in an FPS. (TF2 does not count) You have a will of fricking steel for doing this challenge.
Absolute madman, I wouldn’t have even had the patience to beat the first boss lmao I can’t imagine how frustrating Cala Maria is gonna be with this, especially her third phase. The airplane levels in general seem really infuriating
actually i think 3rd phase will be easiest because there is a method where if you just stand still really close the attacks dont hit you. all you need to do is move up or down when there is a spiked wall
Actually. Cala Maria is going to be the easiest plane level by far because in the second phase. You can go behind Cala Maria and hit she without any problem and in the third phase. you can stay in front of Cala Maria and only the spikes can hit you
remember when balan wonderworld tried the "two button" thing? yeah... this is a much harder "two button" (moving and jumping) thing. absolutely bonkers
It's crazy how this video popped off so much! I found out about your channel from dragoon's TABS legacy video, you went from like 1-2k subs to 7k! Congrats!
Damn you, Susan! I mean... heeeeey Susan how you doing on the beautiful day? Anyways, really cool intro with the storybook thingy and you did a great job at explaining all the difficulties per fight, looking forward to the next part!
Thanks! I find it a lot more difficult to script videos where it relies more on skill than solving a weird puzzle but I think it turned out pretty good here!
To all the people saying that the whetstone is a really bad weapon then consider this: The whetstone isn't supposed to be used as a main weapon it's just supposed to add some extra damage to your main weapons. I've found that it works really well on the Devil, Dr Kahl's robot, and Cala Maria. But it seems to only work well on those particular bosses and none of the others. So it's basically useless.
I don't know how I didn't find you sooner. I love your comedy and I genuinely hope a part 2 comes soon (provided you take care of yourself and don't break your brain)
"The tears never fall in the same spot twice in a row" Meanwhile on the furthest left part of the screen: *two tears in the same spot one right after the other*
Yeah, I see the spot you're talking about. I've never seen them fall on the right side next to Ollie twice in row though. They might be able to and it's just rare idk
Absolutely inspiring video, man! Definitely can't believe a human could've done this... really nice work! P.S.: A strategy I have for the bull attack on Ribby and Croaks is to stick to the left side of the screen, and simply jump or stay still depending on which way the laser will fire. You will automatically slide off of the platform once it leaves view, so you can stay in place the entire attack.
@@BarelyAlec Absolutely! Too bad I've got no more advice for future bosses, all I can give is the advice to not let Quadratus get to your head. Good luck!
