My very first challenge run ever... Today, we go back to the past to show you if you can beat Paper Mario: TTYD without leveling up or badges... or shopping. Or partner upgrades... yeah if you were worried over my sanity in my Bug Fables challenges, you clearly do not know me at all considering I've been doing ridiculous challenges for at least 4 years now.

9:48 WOW, HOLD UP! You get extra dialogue from Bowser if you lose to him?? I never lost or saw footage of losing to Bowser in the Glitz Pit fight; I assumed you'll get a standard Game Over. After all these years I keep learning something new from a old, yet fantastic, game.

This is such an insane run to do as a first challenge run. I started off with really easy challenge runs like 10HP and BP only, it wasn't until a few years later that I started doing harder challenge runs like level zero and pre-Hooktail pit and then coincidentally, I did this run around the same time you did because that was when I discovered this run from watching Kappy and Koop do it. Also that time you got that Shadow Queen down to 4HP and lost is so heartbreaking, I had the same thing happen on my level -1 run except it was 3HP, I know how it feels.

When I first played Paper Mario TTYD, I didn't even know that Attack FX R makes the Hooktail fight easier, I thought I missed a badge, because none were called "cricket" and I didn't eben equip it. Similarly, I didn't know that the Lava Piranha fight in Paper Mario 64 has water as a weakspot, so I beat it without using Sushi at all

Yeah, as a kid I remember being stuck on hooktail for at least a full week because I couldn't really read too well, lol. I found my profile as a kid the other day saved on a lost memory card, and I managed to beat the game as a kid when my file had 12 bp and 55 hp 😂 no wonder it took me like 4 years to beat the game, I had no idea how to even use badges lol

I've been wanting to do a TTYD level 1 run for so long, but I just didn't know how to go about it. I did Paper Mario 64 at level 1 using the strats done by Stryder7x, so I can't wait to finally try this one

Love this series! I would suggest a video idea if you could only use items and items only. Possibly use defense also but it is only an option for the item mandatory rule.

That'd be impossible when the most you can hold is 20 and the most damaging item does 7 damage. But I have done a run already using only items and star power if you’re interested in that.

honestly who on the internet that produces heavily edited content for people to enjoy in supportive communities isn't neuro divergent in some form. like seriously neuro divergent people make some of the best content out there on what sadly seems like to most the most obscure and inconsequential things out there. Ironically, infrequent boosts from Merlee do have a way of making fights go worse if you're specifically planning how much damage you deal or take. In this run, less so since there's no badges allowed, but there are legitimate disadvantages under certain conditions.

Okay, here's a cool tip Kiss thief can ALSO steal items of they don't have an item held Normally you get 1 coin, but the rate of getting items from the enemy (including badges) is the same as their rate of holding them Edit: there's actually an faq on gamefaqs about everything enemy drop wise, it's VERY informative, I'd recommend it, it's a good read

I played tons of TTYD as a kid on my game cube, and I was either blind or stupid but I never knew the FX with Hooktail. Imagine my surprise when I found out what it did years later. 😅

I always used to beat Hooktail without it because it never tells you which certain badge found in her fortress is instrumental in defeating her. Naturally, I went through all the badges I owned _that actually did anything_ and nothing really stood out. Years later when trying to 100% it or something, I looked up what badge I was "missing" and was dumbfounded.

@@saltyralts Well, I am running off 20-year-old memories, because Nintendo refuses to rerelease popular games. But I didn't figure it out on my own. I read the solution on GameFAQs after defeating Hooktail 2-3(?) times (however many times I played through the whole game myself before trying a 100% run). So it's possible I just missed it, but it still seems like that qualifies as the game not explaining it "well."

Funnily enough autistic people are really really smart. Its not that you are "challenged" it's just that when we start something new sometimes we can be slow learners but once we fully understand the ins and outs of what we are doing usually people like us end up prevailing leaving the competition speechless. And when we do make mistakes yet continue to succeed it is even more impressive to those who thought we were going to fail or run into an impossibility

Yeah it's only guaranteed to negate it the first time it's struck.

@@PhantomAarantula it's true that the first attack on Grodus' staff guarantees his next attack to fail regardless of the damage you do to it but for every attack on his staff after that, the % chance of his next attack failing is the damage done to the staff x10 so if you do 10 damage or more to his staff, his next attack is guaranteed to fail. This bit of knowledge really isn't that useful but there are some strats you could build around this, although likely not on level zero runs.

@@nethowarrior3294 In theory, yes. But it's not realistic (or even practical) to think people can just pull it off consistently 100% of the time. And if you practice something enough, that can be said for lots of games. There exist people that can beat Dark Souls without even taking a hit. But people wouldn't call Iron Man challenges for those games speedruns just because they can dodge every attack thrown at them.

Eve will only ask you for charity during Chapter 4 and before you beat Doopliss for the first time. Afterwards, she won't ask you for your help. Even if you remember Eve before Doopliss, you need to have an edible item to give at that moment, or she'll turn into a pig after you finish talking no matter what.

This was what rank 0 hard mode was based on, that is just the Bug Fables version of this run (minus the scavenge rule of course, rank 0 hard mode scavenge in Bug Fables is likely impossible).
