Thank you guys so much for helping me reach over 450 subcribers so far! It really means the world to me to see that so many people are interested in what I have to share, and I'll do my very best to upload many more videos in the coming months.
10:52 what happens with the fight stipulations is that if you win the fight without doing the bonus, you still rank up, but Grubba will pit you against the same opponent again until you complete the fight with the requirement. That's why it's fine to ignore it for the Rawk Hawk fight at the end, because it doesn't stop you from ranking up and once you're number 1, you don't need to do any more fights anyway.
Koops is a very interesting variable. Incredible in battles with multiple enemies, able to protect Mario with a shell, but an Achilles Heel in being jumped on.
Funny enough, Goombella and Yoshi are all you need to finish this challenge overall. They are the best to partners in the game and Yoshi alone can solo every single boss or enemy in the game with some of his moves. Goombella is only arguably better because tattle is useful gaining star power with stylishes and being able to give Mario an extra turn, but in this challenge it won't have any use on that so Yoshi is your best bet for beating the game with just partners. Also, one quick thing about Yoshi, stampede was coded wrong so it hits all enemies making him have one of the best attacks in the game that pretty much no enemies can avoid.
Was the move actually coded wrong or was the description a typo? Considering the amount of screen nukes present in the game the latter seems fairly likely.
The funny thing is she isn't even arguably better when you consider that both strengths of Goombella aren't practical. If Mario is strong enough to warrant spending FP why did Mario not just 1-shot everything? If you need to grind for star power you can easily do that with anyone then immediately flee from combat as it often isn't worth wasting a turn and tanking enemy hits for. All she is left with is jumping on an enemy making her one of the worst partners in the game.
@@Buglin_Burger7878 Wrong, she has peril Multibonk to 1-Shot many bosses herself, tattle being the easiest stylish makes it better for getting star power as you can just mash it, and Rally Wink is way better than you think as getting Mario 2 turns is sometimes better than a single turn on any partner because you use 4FP without any badges with that ability. Koops has a couple of weaknesses that are bad in that he can't hit flying enemies and if he for some reason gets jumped on he loses hit turn, and those alone make him worse. Flurrie is worse because she doesn't do enough damage and has a move that is outclassed by an item. Vivian has a worse stampede by a lot and she has a move that again is outclassed by an item. Bobbery is horrible because he is outclassed by everyone but the only optional partner. Ms. mowz is easily the worst partner in the game as her only niche is getting badges from enemies.
Honestly, if I were doing this, I'd allow mario to swap allies ONLY if one dies, as by no means does it make sense not to, it's not like he's killing anyone or buffing or anything like that, in fact he's opening himself up to more damage in exchange for potentially saving the run and time.
the stipulations in the arena just mean that if you dont fulfill them, instead of getting matched up against higher ranks, youre getting matched against lower ranks to defend your title. you still rise up in the rankings, but are stuck with the same enemies to fight until you do what he says. of course, it doesnt matter when you fight rawk hawk since you reached the top, so your net match would always be a title defence anyways.
Idk I'd have the extra stipulation that mario has to be put in the back and if the partner dies its over. Otherwise hes still acting as a meat shield with +1 defense
That's pretty much what I did! When the partners died, I always did a reset to the last checkpoint - like with a game over - and I did try to keep Mario in the back whenever I could.
I actually know how failing the extra criteria in the Glitz Pit works because of a rather rude occurrence: I got the “don’t use your partner” one AGAINST THE CLEFT BROS.! It turns out you just have to redo the previous fight.
Yeah glitz pit requirement system just determines if your opponent will be a rank above or below you. Its why if youre the champ and youre grinding rawk hawk rematches for star points you can just ignore them.
Yes you can, it's called Yoshi... and he's busted... Edit: if you had Yoshi right at the start of the game, he can quite literally solo the game and is the only partner who can, he can hit every enemy type, has sizable multi target and single target damage and has fairly low FP costs, the only downside is his low HP (which isn't an issue as yoshi usually does peril strats) and his low base damage, you need some damage badges for him to really start snowballing but after that he's pretty much unstoppable, you'd just turn mario into a double dip item user and let yoshi go wild... also Stampede hits everything, including ceiling enemies... _somehow_
30 HP isn't that low in reality, beating the game with Mario on 25-30 HP is perfectly reasonable if you use regular items, no exploits, cooking, badge stealing, casino, or complex strategies. Even just 10 Life Shrooms alone is enough to win any boss fight or get through a dungeon.
For future reference: If a stipulation in the glitz pit isn't done, you move up a rank, but Grubba will make your next match a rematch against the prior team, over and over until you do it.
Yay! I am so excited to watch this! I’ve been loving your challenge runs, especially the Mario one (or not Mario in this case) and I’m so hyped to see how this goes!
Mario: How are we supposed to beat the Shadow Queen? Flurrie, applying lipstick: I’ll need 6 boo sheets, 5 jars of maple syrup, and to make out with Shadow Peach for 2 hours.
4:32 Personally, I'm not fond of Superguards unless necessary, or they have a unique mechanic. Enemies being literally unable to do anything to you makes for boring battles. Anyway, neat analysis & run video! Thanks for uploading!
I totally agree! They would make pretty much any challenge run incredibly easy, if one was skilled enough with them. Thank you very much for your comment, I'm super glad that you enjoyed the video!
hi bounty, haven't see you in a while I absolutely loved your streams and I love your videos such as this one keep up with the good work, hopefully you will have some time to stream during the upcoming vacations. Love you, your good old pal Weamil
Hi weamil, I'm so happy to hear from you! I've been thinking a lot about you lately, I hope you are doing amazing and I thank you so much for the support.
I've always had this idea in mind of playing paper mario ttyd without mario. I never was able to beat the game as we never own a gamecube. I was always only able to play at cousin's house. This content is GREAT!!! THANK YOU for sharing YOUR experience. Did you play this on pc? I've been wanting to play this game again.
Thank you so much!! Yes, I did play it on PC! I played it on an emulator called 'Dolphin', with an HD texture pack installed. If you search around Reddit, you'll probably be able to find a way to install it quite quickly!
Interesting challenge! I'm glad to see you're still alive and posting videos. What would you say was your favorite part of the challenge? Too bad you didn't beat the Pit - I'm pretty sure you could have won. The only bit of criticism I had was that some of the editing and jokes really weren't to my taste. Especially the Chapter 4 section being one big Snapchat joke that I found irritating. But it was a small issue with a great video! Hope you'll continue.
Thank you very much for your comment, man! My favourite part was probably the Glitzpit. It really had the perfect level of challenge for me - I genuinely had to think deeply about a lot of the fights there in order to beat them. I also greatly appreciate your feedback and will absolutely take it to heart! Admittedly, my attempts at humour in these videos is probably the weakest part of them, but I'll definitely try to improve that in future. Again, really appreciate you!
Thank you! You're totally right, I will try my best to improve that in the future. English isn't my first language and I still struggle a bit with pronounciation, but I'll definitely work on it!
Man I remember at the end of PAPER The Thousand Year Door when Yape suddenly got inside the Shadow Palace and messed up The Shadow Queen in ways only Yape could do
This Video was in my timeline just now after i watched a few paper mario Videos. You definitely deserve More subscribers dude. I hope algorithm pushes you further very good content
EDIT: Rewrote my comment to be clearer. If you disobey Grubba, the next official battle will be against the opponent below you in the rankings (if you win, that's the same opponent you just fought), instead of the one above you. Losing to the lower-rank opponent causes you to rank down, and if you rank down enough during Chapter 3, you can fight the teams that replaced King K and Bandy Andy in the rankings. If you are champion, though, the next battle will always be a rematch with Rawk Hawk. (Not sure if he can be rematched during Chapter 3, but this is the case if you return to the area after completing the chapter.) So, it makes sense that disobeying Grubba during the championship match wouldn't affect anything, at least if you win.
Your narration made this video super enjoyable. Not only was this a tough challenge, but doing it on such a classic game provides a fresh twist that made for a very entertaining watch. Would love to see you upload again soon, as it looks like it’s been almost a year since your last post. Hope is all well!
Thank you so much, I'm very glad you enjoyed it! I've recently been trying to figure out the right way to go about making videos again, so I'll hopefully get back on it soon!
Thanks a lot for the feedback! Looking back on it, I totally agree - perhaps I tried a bit too hard to include some funny parts in there when it probably would've been better to leave them out.
I feel you need to adjust the parameters of the challenge. It should just be that Mario can't do anything that would advance the fight. Can't do damage or inflict status, can't heal partner but maybe can heal/protect self? If you can apply items to Mario without advancing the battle, should be fair game. Isn't the point to act as if Mario isn't present? Always have Partner in front and always have Mario interact with partner and foes as little as possible, only heals to avoid game over, but can't ever level up health nor equip badges that benefit Mario directly- partner badges only.
That would be a fair way to go about it as well, sure! I just happened to choose rules that excluded Mario's actions as much as possible, and the challenge was certainly more challenging (and, I feel, more interesting) as a result of that.
Ahh, I'm very sorry to hear that! Nonetheless, I appreciate that you took the time to give me that feedback. I'll definitely work on the way I deliver my humor in future videos!
There's a certain badge that helps you learn the timing with it. It's how I learned to do it decently enough Wait I was thinking of stylish stuff. There's probably a badge for that though.
This might be a dumb question but do you actually play this on the GameCube or do you play it somewhere else? Cause you mentioned save states and that made me curious
Not a dumb question at all! I played this on the Dolphin emulator, on a PC. This is also how I got the graphics to look significantly better than they would've in the Gamecube version.
As someone who was broken by Chapter 4’s excessive backtracking and got fed up with the game there, I commend your effort at enduring this game with even more bullshit on top.
Thank you! I do love Paper Mario: TTYD, but I'll gladly admit that the amount of backtracking, especially in chapters 4 and 7, are among the bigger shortcomings of it. Curious to see whether or not the upcoming remake will do anything about that!
@@Bountynuma I wish the field where Vivian loses the bomb were somewhere in the woods closer to the Creepy Steeple, so that the backtracking takes much less time. Also, Vivian has already seen and fought Mario in Chapter 2, and also seen and fought Doopliss taking Mario’s form before the chapter-final boss fight in Chapter 4. Why does Vivian only notice that she’s been helping Mario at the start of the chapter-final boss fight?
Definitely agree with you on that! As for your second point, I don't remember that Vivian fought against Doopliss at any point before the final fight in the chapter. Although, now that I'm writing this, I would assume that you may be talking about that small interaction between Doopliss and Mario just outside of town, which does happen at least twice (I think) between recruiting Vivian and the final fight. In that case, you're quite right - it does seem odd that Vivian doesn't connect the dots sooner!
Regarding the fighting conditions in chapter 3: even if you don't do then, you will rank up if you win, however, if you don't meet the imposed condition, you don't fight someone in the rank above you in the next fight, so you'll have to fight against the same guys again and gain risking losing and raking down until you meet the conditions. In the fight against the yellow champion, the condition of the fight is irrelevant, as you only need to win to get the belt
Great question! It's been a good while since I've recorded this, but I believe that I just managed to superguard enough of the individual hits from the cannon to barely survive it. Also, I probably used Koops' protective shell on Mario, which would've made it more likely for Magnus to just waste his shots on the shell instead of Koops or Mario himself.
Wow, that's actually true. To be fair, I didn't extend the challenge to the sections outside of fights, but man, that would be one hell of a challenge - not even using the partner's abilities outside of battles!
Question: what is the minimum amount of fights you need to use partners for in TTYD? I say minimum because of that fight in the Glitz Pit where you need Yoshi
That's a very interesting question! I'd guess that the Glitz Pit fight is the only one where you absolutely need one of the partners, but I might be wrong about that.
I recommend that you Beat "Paper Mario TTYD" Without using the companions, and if I say not to use it, IT IS NOT DOING ANYTHING WITH THEM, but superguard and More defense, yes :3
Hey! I just found this channel and its very interesting, I love watching Mario challanges! I normally never really comment on videos but you seem to take time to read and take feedback unlike some content creaters, but I love the challanges! Honestly by the quliety of your videos, I thought you were much more bigger creator (not to be rude ^^) I believe your channel deserves more love, but no the less keep up the great work and have a fantastic day! ❤
You know when you think about it… this challenge is impossible. Who do you need to talk to NPCs to advance the plot? Mario Who do you need to even move? Mario Who do you need to run from battles and guard? Mario
@@Bountynuma the reason is because the condition is only required for higher ranked fighters to be available. So it's pointless during the championship match.
Can you beat Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door without succeeding at Action Commands? Levels, Items, and Badges are all good, but anything that's even the slightest QTE as botched as possible.
That's a good question - I would think that you could argue for both sides. On the one hand, as you point out, it doesn't consume Mario's turn, so I guess, he's not technically doing something. That would make the challenge quite a bit easier, but also probably more fun because fights would go by a bit quicker. On the other hand, the challenge defines it as "Without Mario", not just "Without using Mario". To me, that means that you're trying to beat the game as if Mario didn't exist at all (which would make switching the partners with Mario impossible in the first place). Of course, there are still countless things where you do need Mario (or at least where I needed him), specifically in the overworld, so maybe the first argument, the one in favor of the Quick Change strategy, has a bit more credibility. It's fun to think about!
@@Bountynuma. Okay, so here's something else to add to it. I've been replaying the game the last few days and I noticed something interesting. In a battle Vivian got confused and I tried to switch partners in Mario's turn and two things happened: 1. Mario's turn was consumed despite having Quick change active 2. A different partner came out to the one I selected because Vivian was confused, essentially meaning it was her doing that action
While it has been quite a while since you posted this comment, I wanted to point out that your observation is actually really interesting to me. Even today, I'm not sure how I would approach a Partners-only run with this information, and if I would change anything about the rules that I laid out for myself in this video, but I feel like the fact that the state of the partner (in this case confusion) may have an impact on Mario's action of swapping them out (and therefore potentially making the case that the Quick Change badge should be allowed) could be an important thing to take into consideration when planning for a run like this.
Ahh, for a second there, you really had me thinking that I messed up somewhere! I did indeed say that Mario wasn't allowed to run away ... but the Partners were allowed to do that! So that's how I did it. :)
As far as I remember, there's no way to beat them without Mini-Yoshi, except maybe if you skip the fight using glitches. I'm not very well-versed on the glitch front, so I don't know if there's a way to just skip that one fight; you might have to skip the entire chapter or something if you want to get past them without Yoshi!
@@Bountynuma now im even more curious on their stats on a code level, do they have just an incredibly large number for their hp or is there a an if statement that drops your attack to 0 if your fighting them.
@@mirroredchaos It's a very interesting question indeed! I just looked into this a little and found that the 'Piercing Blow' badge, which allows you to ignore an enemy's defense, doesn't work on them either, so we could argue that their defense stat isn't relevant to this topic. Their HP in the game is set to 6, and I somewhat doubt that they'd have an 'invisible' extra HP value that would allow them to survive all other attacks. I think the most likely scenario would be your suggestion of the 'if'-statement, where any attack other than Yoshi's Gulp simply deals 0 attack!
