Steven Stamkos is officially a member of the Nashville Predators, after spending 16 years with the Tampa Bay Lightning. How hard is it to believe Stamkos isn’t going to finish his career with Tampa Bay? TSN Hockey analyst Frankie Corrado joins SC with Jay Onrait to discuss.

Stamkos was willing to take 5 mill per. Coming off a 40G, 80 PT season. 3 million was an insult & disrespectful from TB.
@jon8004
@jon8004 5 дней назад
That's not the right way to look at it. Tampa offered him more term in exchange for a lower cap hit. $3 million for 8 years. (Or $8 million for 3 years, if you spread the money total over a shorter number of years.) Nashville offered the same, but one more year. Granted, it would be easier for Tampa to buy out those last few years, so that's a concern for Stamkos. But people are getting too hung up on the cap hit. Stamkos wanted $4-$5 million for eight years. Nashville didn't even give him that.

I can’t believe TB was wiling to sign Ryan McDonogh for $6.75M for 7 years but only offered $3M for their Captain and franchise player. Pretty shameful. They could have offered more. Guentzel is a good player and a little younger but he’s no Stamkos. The GM should be fired.
@jon8004
@jon8004 5 дней назад
Dude, no. Guentzel has nothing on Stamkos from, say, five years ago. Today, every team in the league would take Guentzel over Stamkos. He's cheaper (as a percentage of the cap compared to when Stamkos signed), faster and he produces more offense. Stamkos's underlying numbers are in decline, and he's been playing with Kucherov.
@daniellee6398
@daniellee6398 4 дня назад
@@jon8004 Those are legit points but if you’re a Guentzel fan then you know he’s played with Crosby all these years so it’s not fair to say Stamkos is a product of Kucherov. Yes Stamkos is in decline. But he’s a finisher for Kucherov and he’s accomplished a lot for the TB organization. And he took team friendly contracts before so they should have reciprocated. My point is, they paid up big time for other players like McDonough but not for Stamkos, who’s still scoring 40 goals a year?!?
@jon8004
@jon8004 4 дня назад
@@daniellee6398 They paid McDonagh for two years. And if he's not worth it after this year, it's easy to buy out. Stamkos wanted significant money and term. He wanted a sentimental, legacy contract similar to what Ovechkin and Backstrom recently got in Washington. But Tampa's situation is different. It still has younger players right in their primes. They can't afford to be giving Stamkos "thank you" contracts if they want to compete. Tampa clearly doesn't trust that he'll still be good in 2-3 years. If they gave him term, it would have made Tampa less flexible to respond to market opportunities. And if Stamkos is doing really well with Kucherov, it's hard to believe Guentzel won't do just as well.
@daniellee6398
@daniellee6398 4 дня назад
@@jon8004 Guentzel is a solid winger but he’s never scored more than 40 goals in a season. He’s only had more than 82 pts in a season once. This is in spite of playing alongside a generational talent like Crosby his whole career. No disrespect but Stamkos is a legend in TB and their long time captain. Guentzel was never the face of Penguins org nor will he be in TB. Stamkos wasn’t even asking for the money he eventually got with Nashville. $3M offer was a slap in the face. I’m not a fan of this GM. Period.
@jon8004
@jon8004 4 дня назад
@@daniellee6398 Tampa isn't interested in what either player has done in the past. Tampa believes over the next four or five years, Guentzel will be significantly better than Stamkos. Considering the age difference between the two, I think that's hard to dispute. Whether Stamkos is a "legend" or the "face" of the Lightning doesn't seem to matter to the GM, or at least not enough for him to avoid what he did. It makes sense. To me, Kucherov is arguably the best player in the world. I'll be curious to see how Stamkos fares this year with lesser teammates in Forsberg and Josi.

I have always thought that the Lightning Hockey Club under the ownership of Jeff Vinik was a world class operation. The way they put together video montages for former players the first time they play in Amalie after leaving the Bolts. For the life of me, I can't understand or comprehend how the Bolts could treat the face of their franchise for the last 16 years so poorly. It's not even about him leaving at this point (which should never of happened), but how horribly they treated Stammer throughout this. Mr. Vinik, you should be ASHAMED to allow this to happen to the face of your organization.

I may ruffle some feathers as a Tampa Bay fan, and have been since 1993. Stamkos is still producing, he is a fan favorite, and he has done so much for the team and the community. He has come into his own as a leader. Lets look at some stats, though. Yes, he scored 40 goals and 80 points this past season, but he was a minus 21! He had the worst +/- stat on the team for regular roster players. Over the past 8 seasons, he's been up and down with more minus seasons than plus seasons. Also, 19 of his 40 goals were on the power play, which is good, but 5-on-5 he was not as productive, nor was he noticeable on the ice at some points. He became a defensive liability. I have quite a few Stamkos jerseys, and I really do like the guy, but Guentzel, who is 5 years younger, and had a +25 stat last year, shows me we made the right move. It may not sit well with the fans, but we have to take a gamble in order to stay competitive... unlike Toronto who keeps running it back with the same results every time.
@ItsJared___
@ItsJared___ 4 дня назад
They really didn't have to take a gamble to stay competitive. Guentzel is not a leader and is not physical. You got rid of a 40 goal scoring captain who has been the face of the franchise for 16 years and wanted to be there. Stamkos established a winning culture in Tampa, and would've been willing to take a very team friendly deal to keep the team competitive. Winning again with that core group would've been a lot more special. Also, plus/minus is an extremely overrated stat especially when your job is to score goals (which he does)

one thing a lot of bellyachers and casuals overlooked, is that guentzel had 37 goals with a plus-minus of +8, stamkos 40 goals and a minus 21. jake is also 5 years younger. even with his skill level at his current age of 34, having scored 40 goals, steven is NOT going to be worth $8m in a few years when he declines. factor in his powerplay points from last season and his goal scoring has dropped significantly 5 on 5 the last 3 seasons. 19 of his 40G came from the pp this past season, where he benefits a lot from kucherov and hedman. forwards that can play a 2-way game help teams win. these are the major reasons why steven's gone. as a tampa fan i'm happy for steven getting one last big paycheck. i'm also glad the team dodged a bullet if that was the price ($8m /AAV) that was required to keep steven under contract. ⚡
