In my recent video about why nobody wants to buy cheap MacBooks anymore I talked about the gulf between what people will pay for Apple Silicon and for Intel- basically, there's a huge middle ground from $250-600 where there aren't many appealing options. But if you want to go SUPER cheap, there are definitely MacBooks to fit your budget, and today we're going to check one of them out! This 2010 15 inch MacBook Pro cost just $22, and as a super cheap MacBook it might just be a steal of a deal! We're going to try to fix and upgrade this cheap eBay Mac with as little money as possible, and hopefully get a fully working Mac running macOS Ventura for $50! That's right, a $50 MacBook.

This whole series shows us we're NOT powerless. If we take things into our own hands, we can rescue these machines from the landfills and do our bit to improve things. I ran the OpenCore Legacy version of Monterey for many months on my 2011 Macmini5,1. Now, I've switched to Linux, which runs with a bit more snap and speed than the beautifully-patched macOS Monterey. If you're up to it, make more of these types of videos if you like. I'll watch 'em! I really like your channel and being following for some years now. Especially those kind of videos I am really looking forward to because they show two things, one, you can get working tech for a small amount of money and two, you don’t always need the most modern tech to get the job done. It always depends on what you want to do and especially for light tasks you don’t need maximum performance at all. I found a Late 2009 21,5“ iMac for 37,40€ including shipping a few days ago on eBay which especially here in Germany is not always that easy and I am really looking forward to it. The device shall get in here on Tuesday the next week. It will be the very first time I will play around with OCLP and I am very excited how this puppy will do. You could have just shown the results and said you were $200 all in and I’d have been impressed. Very cool.

IMO we are at the technology plateu, with phones even more so than PCs since if you sideloaded the latest android you can easily still use 8 years old flagship. Same with the computers, I'd say 4th gen intel is still pretty good, worst case even 2nd gen will do but anything older I'd say it's obsolute.

Done it with relatives cast offs…. We need you to do a walk thru for open core patcher now that would get some hits

Hi Luke.Great video,as always.Im just wondering,I have a MacBook Air from 2012 that I bought a year ago.I haven't used it much-could I update it from Catalina to a more recent OS?If so,what software would I require?
@loiclaurent
@loiclaurent 10 месяцев назад
Yes you coups with opencore Legacy patcher, it works great on my 2012 mbp and use it since 2021. all works Perfect. Just, when a new version is out, you have to redownload all the system in the update section. (For best performance, I upgraded from 10.15 to 11, 11 to 12 and 12 to 13, that takes more time but I think it’s better. Dont install with a fresh install!) I say that because when you upgrade, it takes the best configuration for the gpu, and when it’s a fresh install, it just takes the default options. Also, I use my MacBook with Sonoma beta 4 since it’s out (you can only with the oclp beta). I hope I help you !

I'm assuming there's no app or imsg support. Have to ask. Still shocked about how usable they seem to be. Could be better than a chrome book.

DosDude1 did a mod to get 16GB to work. He used 2x1043 8GB to work. Yeah it’s slower but it’s better for heavy tasks such as multitasking.

Also read carefully to make sure that you are not getting just a box for the item. That can be misleading until you read the listing and you find that it is just a measly box!

I can confirm that these old MacBooks have better screens than many budget windows laptops. They lack power though but are still usable for non demanding tasks.

A 2010 model? Infamous for a kernel panic due to a faulty capacitor on the GPU circuit. I replaced the capacitor on mine with a higher capacity option and the crashes stopped entirely.

post sandy bridge release mac (2011) are probably a good place to find perfectly usable machines for less than 150 bucks. I'm a bit skeptic about using ventura with the same performance as with the original OS but firefox support was just dropped for high sierra which mean you can still use it for some time with it.

can be cheaper, got a free 13" 2011 MacBook Pro with an expanded battery, original 320GB hard drive, and 8GB of ram. Replaced the battery and hard drive back in 2022 when I got it and it's running macOS Ventura. It served as my workstation all throughout summer 2022 and my final year of high school, getting my work done, and it did have trouble at times and would lag doing some of my work, and sometimes even dying in class on those days I needed to do a heavy workload. It's on a long break, and has been since I graduated.

I got an Core2Duo Intel MBP from a friend. My MBP has 8gb of RAM. I took out the HDD and installed an SSD. I could not get macOS Lion to install on the MBP but I did get Kubuntu Linux to install on it no problem. My Core2Duo MBP has a fan issue of being really noisy (I think due to the graphics card failing?). I can browse the web, watch RU-vid videos in 480p with a little bit of lag. I am getting into this used MBP. I plan on buying a 2012 i5 Intel MBP from Ebay in the future. My main Mac is a 2019 4K retina 21.5in iMac with 8gb of RAM. I plan on buying an Apple Silicon Mac in the future when my 2019 iMac is no longer supported by Apple.
