I built a Power Wagon with everything Rock Pirates offer for the SCX10 with a HW Fusion 1200kv and Ecopower 120 servo and Flysky GT5 radio and full droop on Desert Lizard shocks and some Amazon beadlocks with Proline Swampers and I've beat several flat rail chassis trucks worth twice as much. To me it's all about how things work together and knowing how to see the right lines. Great video and I hope to see more.

Niiiice!! Great setup! I think people certainly underestimate the abilities of these modded stock trucks-that said, it seems like many more are catching onto the cost effectiveness of RPRC and a little tuning and driving time!

It can definitely be an expensive hobby, but I would recommend checking out Facebook groups or seeing if you know anyone personally who's selling a rig-that's the best way to get in cheap! If you can't find anyone, there are definitely options for saving money at the hobby shop as well, such as grabbing a kit instead of RTR and getting some cheaper electronics to start with. Cheers! 🤘🏼

Budget is under $200.00 in my opinion, all three of my rigs together with upgrades does not hit $700.00. That is just plain insanity, what is considered high-end then $3,500.00?

@@DTW-bx2vy What rig would be under $200 in running form? A SCX10 Base camp builders kit is$280 & you still need electronics, body wheels & tires. Most RTRs from Axial are $4-500. Most Traxxas TRX4 are over $500 in RTR. An Element Enduro Builders kit is ~$250 & needs electronics, body, wheels & tires. Vanquish Fordyce RTR is $400. You could get a Redcat Danchee RTR for

@DargoDog
@DargoDog 2 года назад
Great video!!!! So much depends more on the driver's ability and set up compared to how Gucci the rig is. There are things that hedge your bets though, a better servo and a wider torque/speed range only serve to make a good rig better. But, both of these rigs are a good example of why I no longer compete in C2, and only compete in C1 and C3. C2 has morphed into a weird C3 "light" class, and is really just lacking the dig or rear-steer to go all of the way to C3, no longer is it a modified, street legal set up.
@highnoonhobby
@highnoonhobby 2 года назад
Thank you very much! You make many good points. The driver is certainly the deciding factor at the end of the day. And that's an interesting perspective, but I find myself agreeing with you, it seems like C2 is basically just run whatever at this point, just without DIG or 4WS. Definitely makes it an interesting challenge.

Good morning and happy friday Alec! Couple things I have noticed comparing my cheap and expensive chassis. #1 is the weight of my cheaper element build, it's easily 1.5lbs heavier than my Tgh build. And I do notice a big difference trying to pull that weight up obstacles. Most of that comes from the motor, tranny, and chassis rails. I run a holmes hobbies br mini esc, torquemaster 27t expert motor and the stock element transmission with plastic gears. And I have comped this truck, I didn't do so great at the comps always outside of top 10. Anyways I hope this helps you and others out trying to find a great setup for your comp rigs!! Love your narration on all of these videos! Keep up the great work!!

Goooood morning and the happiest of weekends to you my friend!! Thank you so much for the input, I really appreciate it! It's interesting, I feel as though I've seen rigs that are too heavy to comp, but I also feel like I've seen rigs that are too light and they just can't quite seem to get power to the ground in low-traction scenarios. Seems like you've got to find that perfect balance-maybe somewhere in the just-over-four-lbs range? Either way, thanks again for checkin in and giving this one a watch, you da man, Ryan! 🤘🏼🤘🏼

personally, my goal is simply to build a truck that is as close to an exact scale match to my RL truck as I can... competition is a bonus but mine would be primarily for recreation, but would require a LOT of custom fabrication of parts. still as so much of the RL truck is in need of a healthy budget, I doubt I will get to start doing anything more than collect printer files for parts for a couple years. thanks for an interesting video... good to know a RC can still be competitive without going all out in the parts catalog. even recreational wheeling of RCs will result in competition with friends who brought thiers.

Hardly a 'budget' build, nice truck but more than 3 times the cost of my 1:10 4X4 crawler and that has 2 steering servos ( 4 wheel steering) But I suppose a 'low budget' is considerably more in the USA than here in the UK where a 'budget build' is usually under £200 : Just added up car costs and for less than the price of your 'budget' truck I have Four different vehicles. 1:10 crawler. 1:8 MK1 Ford Escort rally car, 1:12 DAF racing truck (races with tractor unit on its own but also includes semi trailer) and a 1:24 Outback 3 Mini crawler. : If I include the Rlaarlo AMD-12 with a few upgraded parts and a pile of Li-=ION and LiPo batteries the whole lot was still under £650. Now that's what I call ''budget builds'

Huge difference when your running a comp rig with over 2000$ into it in parts alone with lcg chassis compared to a TRAIL crawler with a stock HCG c channel frame so they will drastically functuon different in all terrains, but just like any other hobbys or sports. Money will buy you anything to the point of becoming the best. I feel like thats most comp crawler guys just based off how much they spent on there rig compared to what normal ppl run rtr, 6-800$ isnt really a budget rig. But in todays market thats what pretty much gets you a base line rtr truck which is horse crap lol, its all in the set up too right! Lcg chassis are extremely cheap upgrade for scx10, that matched with heavy brass weights and weighted beadlocks and it becomes a stout rig with very minimal work needed
@andy51900
@andy51900 2 года назад
Nice comparison. Your rig is definitely plenty capable, probably just a little difference in skill level. I'm finding that the holmes 550 brushed motors in the 8-10 turn range can get some really great wheel speed and still crawl really well. Although I still do enjoy my hobbywing axe system.

@highnoonhobby
@highnoonhobby 7 месяцев назад
You can definitely afford a great rig at that price! I would personally recommend looking at an SCX10.2 or SCX10Pro as a base for the rig. You can go a million different ways with the build, but I love Rock Pirates RC parts, myself. Making a rig competitive really comes down to tuning and testing and tuning some more!

Howdy! I'm not sure when you're talking about, but as long as the rig either: a)lands upright without the driver touching it or, b) the driver is able to upright the vehicle without touching it, then there are no penalty points assigned. That's just the rules for this comp, so that might change depending on where you are and what style of comp you're in. Thanks for the question! Cheers. 🤘🏼🤙🏼

Totally understand that perspective-I think they are trying to cover R&D costs and whatnot, but I agree that they still seem to be pricing out a lot of people by having everything be so expensive. Hopefully as the hobby continues to grow, more budget options will become available! 🤘🏼

700$ "budget"? I got some quite expensive models too (like a Tamyia Panther 1:16 full Option + Extras coming up to $1000), but I would not deem that budget... that would go to an Heng Long tank of the same scale. Didn't know rock crawling was so expensive, but on the other hand: What doesn't if you take it to a professional level?
@highnoonhobby
@highnoonhobby 2 года назад
Hahaha that's how I felt when I got into the hobby!! 😂 But it's crazy what some rigs cost when you add up the costs on all of the specialty bits and bobs. Looking back on this video, I could probably elaborate on how to get into crawling even cheaper-but I think this info still holds up well. As I've been in the hobby for a bit longer now, I think I could probably leverage some secondhand deals and get that price down a little bit. But I appreciate the input! The scale models have always interested me; but I do love how my crawler gets me out on hikes and into places I wouldn't normally visit. I'd say that alone is worth it to me! 🤘🏼🤘🏼

Would a brushed motor or a brushless motor be best for comp crawling and general crawling? What would be the general preferences???
@highnoonhobby
@highnoonhobby 2 года назад
Honestly, I don't personally have a huge preference, but I know tons of guys who run brushless on everything and swear by them. My comp rig has a cheap Reedy Power brushed motor and it does absolutely awesome-but then I also have a brushless motor in every other rig besides my Capra, which is still on the stock brushed motor from the RTR kit. My general logic is that brushless are more efficient, so maybe they're better for trailing? It also seems like their probably a bit more precise than brushed motors-but I think that generality probably isn't always accurate either. Hopefully this helps somehow, although I don't know how much clarity I'm providing here 😅

@highnoonhobby

The hard part about it is the entrance-centering your truck in V-notches is definitely the goal, however approaching from one side makes it difficult to get both the front and rear to be centered, as you need to overshoot with the front to get the rear to line up. Good observation, though! 🤘🏼

@highnoonhobby 2 года назад
I would say so! Depends on the weight of the rig, however. If you’re around 4-5 pounds, two stage foams are probably less necessary-but the heavier the rig the more you’ll want to go two-stage. That said, there seem to be a million ways to come up with great traction when it comes to foam options.

Awesome! These are the type of videos I really enjoy. I mean don’t get me wrong, I love the fun ones and the videos that get down to scale and tell little story or whatever but these type of videos help newbs like me learn as I go. All I have to do is jump on RU-vid while I take my daily commute to and from work. I do however still have questions like if you could break it down for me what is the difference between a brushed and brushless motor?Which is better for crawling? (in your opinion) Which is better for all around use & durability? As my final question… Which is best for using in water conditions or mud? Thank you and I wouldn’t mind if you made a video answering these questions… Thank you again Looking forward to your future videos
@highnoonhobby
@highnoonhobby 2 года назад
Thanks for checking in!! And I'm glad we can learn together! I definitely turned to RU-vid as soon as I went down the rabbit hole of RC Crawling, just like I have for many hobbies before. As for your questions, I would say that a sensored brushless motor is the best for crawling, but all types have their own merits. I'm certainly not the one to explain the difference between the two from an engineering standpoint (I could google it and give you that answer, but you could probably do that yourself) but I do know that brushless motors tend to be considered more "high-end" and I have experienced that brushless motors provide better torque, they stay cooler under high loads, and they seem more accurate when it comes to throttle input. When it comes to which is better-it's a lot of personal preference. I like the performance and low-maintenance of brushless, but some swear by brushed due to the durability and low cost. All electronics are different when it comes to water proofing, so that is going to vary greatly. Cheers! 🤙🏼

@@highnoonhobby Thank you very much for the speedy reply… Most of the time I get ignored on the RU-vid comment section when I ask for questions. I Google everything I ever have questions for simply for the fact of getting information quickly at the touch of a few buttons. I have a friend that owns a hobby shop it is strictly RC, I’m trying to get some guys together to do an event soon and he already said he wants to be involved and will donate some prizes and help out with the planning, I asked him to start doing a small class or even a 30 minute RU-vid video for noobs like myself. As I recently stated I’ve been in the RC for many many years ever since I was a young boy, but getting away from them for decades and then getting back into the hobby and seeing all the new vehicles, new types of cars and trucks & categories has been a whirlwind of info it was hard to retain everything LOL I am mechanically inclined so it’s not hard to break the truck down when it’s broken and replace broken parts. Recently I had issues because I modified it and had to make things work where originally they wouldn’t i.e. the shocks on a new axle carrier where there are no points for the shocks to screw into and mount on. I had to think about it and come up with my design. I’m sure I’ll pick up on many things I don’t know but I doubt I’ll be building any class 1 comp trucks Anytime soon lol
