Just a *word* in that I know how to beat fang forts. I'm not great with sabertooths, hence why I picked it for this match up as we were just practicing. I'm familiar with how to beat fang forts though and appreciate everybody's feedback.

Sparty passing over the aiming system was a huge blunder. The acid dropped at an advanced spot, he skipped the range and it put the contact line further back from the acid for longer because the giants stopped further back to fire.

No offense to Sparty since he's clearly a good player but I do not agree that he "did everything right". If at any point in the early rounds he played something with armor the Fangs would've never leveled and the strategy would've died in its crib. Armored Sledges, Armored Wraiths. Maybe he doesn't have armor on any of them though. But for anyone struggling with this I highly recommend it. You can literally spam nothing but armored Sledges and still win if your opponent just plays the Fang-Fort-Strategy down without too much thinking.

In a real game though you'd be teching and building into sledgehammers vs forts. Surely any rational player would switch to Fort carry and use the fangs for chaff? Building sledges into forts is like donating MMR to your opponent.

@@MrHighRaw Fang carry games tech very early into Fangs and build a ton of them early on too so that they can scale. Once that is done it is very difficult to completely abandon that strategy and go with Fort carry instead. Because the board is also built in a way that the Forts will be the frontline protection and not the carries. Armored Sledges are not countered by Forts. I keep hearing that but it is simply not true. A level 1 Fort needs 2 shots for a level 2 Sledgehammer with armor. A level 2 Fort still needs 2 shots for a level 3 Sledgehammer with armor. That is just not very efficient. Of course your Sledges won't be the carries anymore then. They'll be the chaff just like the Fangs would become the chaff. Obviously once the Forts drop you need some sort of heavy hitter. Artillery, Boats and Melter are all good options. I prefer a mix of Boats and Artillery. I've ran into this strategy a bunch of times after Surrey featured it extensively on his channel and this approach has always worked out even when the opponent actually tried to adapt. The strategy as a whole is very rigid and inflexible because of the necessary heavy early investment into the Fangs.

"Does everything right". Of course, he didn't. As soon as you see Fang carry in round 1, you need Mustangs with Range and Splash and something to break shields and destroy Fortresses. What do we see here? Trash investment into Assault Marksman, not enough Sabertooths, if he wanted to use them for dealing with Fortresses. Plus they were without cover and died every turn in a second. Only artillery drop helped him, but smart play with Mustangs nullified this.

@@jurigolomako5188 defintly, enemie can still pivot though When does on consider a fang spam a fang spam at 5 fangs early i wouldnt go full mustangs yet, maybe starting at 7'ish?

@@jonathanwennstromm1578 nobody goes 5 Fangs in turn 1 without intention to play Fang spam and you need to act quickly. But you can do whatever you want, if it works for you

Honestly I've played this matchup a few times and I think there's quite some things that could've been done better. The fire callers are great but you need them round 3, not 7, before the fangs level so they can kill early giants and spread fire everywhere and it isn't easy to counter them early. Sell the sabre and get them early. Second, sledgehammer frontlines work pretty well against fangs, if they can match the level and get the armor upgrade they need thousands of hits before they go down.

I think that your bigger advantage in this game is very even front and enemy standing up close. When fangs have to travel greater distances it is much easier to lure them in a fire(one you can spill on your side of the map). Possible existence of medium armored units mentioned in other comments would not also make fang damage less efficient, but will also prolong the battle, which means less efficient anti-rockets, which means terrible death from storms. In general, I feel that prolonging the battle with flanks and overloading one side of the battlefield in combination of range for storms does wonders against carry fangs simply because how little they need te die from fire - all you need is to lure them in.

Heyo, seeing fang carry always makes me smile, happy to see you are having fun with those as well. Because of fire storms and vulcans, usually you want to surround your opponent from flanks, so you still can squize through fire somewhere and position your forts in the way they would agro all fire sources on themselfes, leaving fire-free spots in beetween forts for fangs.

Why didn't you flank your opponent to distract missles? Stroms raining fire on friendly territory is always fun. Also, if levels are so important, is it worth to elite-recruit the fangs? Or is their amount more important? And for your opponent... may be if he'd have splash on mustangs it'd went better? Splash proved to be very effective against chaff in my games.

Yes to flank. Since it's a sparring session I wanted to push the limit of AM mustangs. As for elite recruitment, it's absolutely needed after round 4 if I still have lvl 1 fangs. Because of the early fort I was able to get a few levels PLUS i had double tech (range + mech rage), making elite recruitment unnecessary And as for splash mustangs, i think it's worth a try. It adds more swing to the engagement as it realy depends on how quickly my fangs can take out the mustangs before batches of them are wiped.

Depends on when they enter and how the counters would be. Wraith would prob stand a greater chance than tanks

mustang aa is the worst AA possible, its near uselesss, everytime i use storms and opponent use mustang aa i win.

Maybe Sparty should have played 4 - 6 Vulcans with armor upgrade (highest unit-level possible in this case for most dmg-mitigation and hitpoints) and/or range instead of 6 Melting Point and something to destroy fortress (like phoenix??? -> sell 4 stormcrawlers/snipers) or 8 - 10 scorpions (instead of 6 Meltingpoints and 4 stormcrawlers/snipers) with armor upgrade (also highest unit-level possible in this case) and maybe range (not siege!!!). What do you guys think, does armor upgrade counter mass fangs?

Nobody has armor on Vulcans that's the problem. Armor on other things does indeed counter Fangs.

Do you think counter-teching crawlers would work? Crawlers eat fangs alive if they can close the distance, the only thing is spamming crawlers makes you very vulnerable to certain swaps in a way that fang spam doesn't, I.E. air counters and vulcans. I also think carry sledges might work as a counter, enough sledges, especially with range can eat fangs alive. Maybe high-explosive war factories?

in my experience Stang/Crawler/Fort is the answer and sometimes armor rhinos/balls can be good to mix in as well. Super late it can be ok to add range/EMP melters if opp has significantly more forts than you.

Crawlers will lose once there is a critical mass of leveled and teched Fangs. Even with Tunneling they can't get to the Fangs anymore. Sledges with Armor eat this strategy alive. The Fangs do no damage to them and at level 2 an armored up Sledge also survives 2 level 1 Fortress shots which makes Forts quite ineffective against them. Need some heavy hitters in the back to get through the Forts though. Either Stormcallers, Melters or Boats. Probably a mix of 2 of those.

Crawlers dont do well vs mech ranged fangs, even if they have underground. You can try a hail mary with underground AND photon boats, but if it doesn't work you're dead on arrival.

For Fang carry is AP ammo really better than ignite or is it more a preference? I suppose the idea is the forts take out the higher HP units?

Unleveled Fangs become threatening to giants with ignite but ignite itself doesn't scale. If your Fangs are you carry units you want techs that scale with them.

AP helps vs armor techs. Ignite does too to an extent but it is not very efficient vs armored smaller targets while AP is.

AP is more flexible than ignite, and can do decently well vs shields and other medium units
