Fun fact: The 2.88KB QR Code mentioned at the beginning, you'd need just under 11 of those to fit Super Mario Bros, one of the simplest colored games of all time (for reference, the size of the actual ROM file is 31KB and the the precise amount is 10.77 2.88KB QR codes)

This really shows how much we take sprites, polygons, or anything else that involves graphics in any shape or form, for granted these days.

My first thought upon seeing the title was "Probably, so long as you do it in assembly code." I'm actually shocked I was right, considering how little I know about programming. The channel Dave's Garage has a really neat video where he tries to write the smallest functioning program he can in assembly code, highly recommend to anyone who likes stuff like this

Ok, I’ll be honest. This video has been on my feed for quite some time, and finally I clicked it thinking “too long, I’ll just skip around to find the answer and see the final product”. As soon as I click, I’m met with an instant reply to the question, and that not only sets up the video in a great way, but also makes me instantly 100x times more interested in the topic. I ended up watching every second of it, despite knowing literal basic C from highschool, great project.

thank you so much for making this video, this is invaluable to me as someone who has been trying to figure out the best way to code a (benign) showpiece virus/game. this seems like a good way to make it as small and simple as possible, especially if i don't need to actually cram it into 3kb of space

I know this video is old, but I just thought I'd share some thoughts on the project. Great video, great concept and great job overall in implementing it. I absolutely love things like this. If you ever decide to revisit an assembly implementation, I would suggest opening up a copy of the Intel x64 software developers manual, Volume 2. It contains the full opcode reference for both x64 (in all available modes) and IA-32, including the number of bytes occupied by a given instruction. The instruction size can depend on what operands you're using with it, and thanks to their CISC architecture, some instructions can easily be substituted with others that produce a smaller machine code footprint. It may also be beneficial to look at some of the techniques used in crafting shell code, two of which I detailed here already. The name of the game in producing shell code, if you aren't familiar, is typically writing machine code with a small memory footprint, while avoiding nul-bytes -- with the smallest execve shellcode that I've seen occupying only 21 bytes. I don't want to say looking into this would definitely be helpful, since obviously Linux and Windows take vastly different stances on how to perform calls to their respective kernels. And obviously, as others have stated, running your compiler without assembling would be helpful, or alternatively just disassembling it with something like objdump -d (may require setting up a MinGW environment with something like msys2 -- I'm not sure). Then if you see any improvements to the executable after applying some handwritten optimizations to replace or modify the instructions with longer machine code output, you could apply crinkle again for compression. I'm not terribly familiar with development on Windows these days, but I do recall that rather than using interrupts to interface with the Win32 API, like you see on POSIX systems, you have to call the user space function which gets linked to the program, and serves as a trampoline to get to the kernel-level implementation. So I'm not sure how well that can be optimized, or if it really can at all. It would, in my opinion, be much easier to optimize on Linux (WSL2 should also handle it just fine once configured correctly), but that's just because I find development on Linux to be much less of a headache overall. On a side note, QR codes can definitely be used to embed malicious content -- I will have to look later, but I'm pretty sure I read an article, orr possibly a video here on RU-vid, a few years ago about overlaying malicious QR codes on top of legitimate ones (using two different sizes). Anyhow, great work again.
