Repairing a DSG transmission vehicle can be difficult and expensive. This has most people wondering if the DSG transmission issues can be resolved cheaper or easier. In this video we explore the trials and tribulations we ran across while trying to fix a 7speed DSG transmission in an Audi S4 model.
While this video talks a lot about the S4 specifically a lot of the same principles would apply to many VW and Audi models that also use a DSG transmission. This would include cars like the MK5, MK6 and MK7, GTI, Jetta, CC and more.

I just fixed my sons S4. 2nd gear shift solenoid intermittent failure. When re-installing the valve body, the humble mechanic on his page said 28mm. In this video, he said it may depend on your year. Well my sons B8.5 I noticed it was about 4mm off. I set the servos for 32mm and it fell right into place. Great video.

Just from my experiences, after seeing the clutches were burnt and that was more than likely the "main" problem. I would have done a timing kit since the trans was out. 19:08 was some scary stuff man. Imagine the motor being just fine but the hydraulic tensioner decided to fail on start-up from sitting for a period of time. I enjoy watching your shows. Keep it up.

I did the circuit board replacement on my B8 S4 on my driveway. Here is a tip. If you ended up like me trying to push the mechatronics and it doesn't go in place, even with everything aligned by the book. Get six M6 long bolts(100mm long). Use them in place of the short bolts, they'll keep all aligned properly, push it in place(was a snap), then replace with the correct bolts. My S4 is working like a champ, don't know for how long. 😊

The stalling looked like the clutch calibration was way out of whack, most likely because operated for so long when faulty. The controller just tried to slowly creep, but because the old shot clutch needed rather high pressure to do that, the controller just send that high oil pressure there. The new clutch grabbed way stronger on it, so before the controller had any chance to respond, the engine stalled. Same reason for the jerky shifting afterwards. I would guess normal procedure would be to reset the calibration. But as it managed to run, it will gradually recalibrate itself even on its own, it will just take some driving time, preferably involving a lot of shifting at various engine loads. For the exhaust bolt direction: I'm pretty sure the engineers knew what they were doing. The thing is, they have to observe other objectives too. First of them is to make sure it will be possible to disassemble even when exposed to road salt. The thing is, the flange forms a kind of barrier, preventing the salty mist just above the road to go above that flange. So what is below, will be way more exposed to that salty mess vs what is above that flange. This way below, so more exposed is just the bolt head, which is rather immune. The way more sensitive thread is then on the upper, cleaner side. Putting the nut down means the thread would be the more exposed part, so more likely get completely jammed by corrosion. And the other aspect is related to the car makers priorities: They care for these things to be serviceable at least somehow, last till the end of the warranty period and then be cheap, so fast and simple to assemble on the production line. The fact it becomes harder, so more expensive (labor) to service after the warranty goes out is not their problem, that would be paid by the customer. Plus I don't think disassembling this would be that big of a deal either, taking into account you have to replace that bolt anyway. So taking an impact hammer-wrench to loose it from the bolt head side and so eventually snapping off that bolt heat would still be good enough way to disassemble that.

In 2007 I bought a 2005 TT with DSG. The DSG was a new thing then, it was only the second year of production. and everyone worried about how costly it would be to repair. About a year in, my TT started shifting really badly…and I thought to myself “oh hell, this is gonna hurt”. I took it into a dealer and they called me the next day to say it was fixed. Turns out the DSG was fine. They replaced a Brake light switch for $45 bucks and it ran perfectly. Apparently, a signal from the brake light harness is important info the car uses to decide which gear to preselect? Anyhow… I still have that car at 130k. The 6 speed DSG still runs perfect.

I have a 2013 S4 that has a donor transmission from a 2016 S4. I was one of the first S4 owners to post online about upgrading the transmission. Got it done at JH Motorsport . Turns out the B8.5 Transmission does fit in the B8 , but it needs to ODIS to code the unit to the car. Great content fellas.
@Capt_Trash_Panda
@Capt_Trash_Panda 2 года назад
2013 is a B8.5. You did not upgrade your transmission (unless you have a very early 2013) You went from a b8.5 to a b8.5 that required a OTIS update for the new mech. If you had just replaced your mech, OTIS would have to been used to recode it to your VIN.

Hey Tom, The DSG on my 2008 A3 TDI is working fine when driving, but mostly when putting it into reverse it makes a clunking noise and it seems to go into gear on the 3rd attempt. Same when putting it into P. If it doesn't go into R or P the PRNDS Flashes and engine light comes on but drives fine. Fault code 1: Turbocharger Boost Control Sensor "A" circuit low. Fault code 2: P2711 'Unexpected mechanical Gear disengagment.

Big reason why I Sold my MK7 GTI (DSG). It was having horrible whiny noises when in 5th-6th gear. It drove me insane. local Volkswagen shop told me it was definitely the transmission, and that I was better off just replacing the whole thing. It was still gonna cost me an arm and a leg even if I were able to find a used one. Parts + labor was still too much. Considering this was going on during the pandemic, when money was tight. I miss the car like crazy, but oh well. Definitely not worth the headaches.

Having a lift would be nice, but it is possible to do it without it, just a "bit" more work lol Mine were a little toasty, nothing like those clutch packs were... Mine were slipping due to a piggy back without a TCU tune.. extra power without extra clutch pressure is a bad idea everyone!

After replacing the clutch pack the clearances will be different to the adapted values. Therefore using a new or used clutch pack always requires basic settings and adaptions to be performed. Hence when you tried to select drive or reverse it stalled. But repeated attempts will probably get it to work as its always adapting.

I have a q5 2012 that was unable to engage in reverse gear. Mechanic indicated that I should replace transmission. With the replacement transmission I had to change the drive shaft. Took it to an independent programer to delete TCU files. Currently the replacement transmission drives smooth and engages all gears when cold, and when it is warm it slip in gear 3 and it produces the following intermittent codes: p17e100, p174d00, p17d800, p176b00. and it also produces static code: p179c00 This vehicle is a pain in the ass

Halo, I have a Jetta 2006 DSG 6 gears. When I accelerate/decelerate past 1000 rpm the car jacks and drives smooth after that. The car jacks as well when in traffic if I shift from Drive to Neutral and vise versa.. what could be causing this?!

Did you open the replacement clutch pack for inspection. Why didn't you simply replace the clutch friction and steel plates.

Hey guys, I've been watching your good videos for some time now and I saw this one more of my interest because I have a Golf mk7 2014 with DSG7 Diesel I bought this car used back in 2019 and I never replaced the oil of the gear also I'm in Portugal so I know some stuff is different from the US models, I was told that this oil of gear doesn't need to be replaced, is that true? I really want to keep my car running well specially in this department since it's very expensive to repair. BTW my car already have 212k km. I do confirm my motor housing is super clean no oils no nothing spilled. Thank you

Great video, I recently had a DSG issue where I could no-longer go into reverse or into even numbered gears ( 2,4,6) on my B8.5 S4 that had only 37k miles. Luckily I had an extended warranty as AUDI quoted the repairs to be £11k

I recently brought an Audi A4 b6 avant 1.9tdi cvt. There’s continuous vibration when it’s in park, drive, neutral and reverse and the only time it would go away is if I put the car in neutral while am driving. The vibration gets louder at higher rpm. The other issue I notice, after while of driving hard and if I switch the car off and turn it back on it would crank up straight away I have to crank few times. If anyone had any issue like this please let me know how you managed to resolve this issue.
