Can You Get a Seal Skin Sporran?

Though very traditional, seal skin as a pelt for sporrans has had a checkered history. Regulations have come and gone in Scotland. As of now it is not legal to import or sell seal skin sporrans in the USA. Are there ways around the ban? Is seal skin all it’s cracked up to be? Or are there substitute materials that are just as good?

I’m so glad that I live in Canada. I love my seal skin sporran. They are perfectly acceptable and readily available up here.

The endangered species act is the US legislation you have to worry about running afoul of. I'm not sure the exact year the species of seal was placed on it but it's on or after 1972 because that's when the ESA came into existence. So in theory if you have a pre 1972 something or other with documentation it's legal although it's on you to prove it's that old. Of course if you are bringing it back into the US after taking it out of the US is about the only time you would run into customs and have your stuff scrutinized so if you have legal preban don't take it out of the US with you.

I would love to have a timber wolf sporran being from MN, but they are protected. They are really beautiful, but still get poached and it is quite sad.

The Canadian grey wolf is not fully protected. The Western states have open seasons for them. You can find a skin for them, not cheap, but available

I just know that somethings if they’re old enough or grandfathered in and you’re allowed to buy and sell them. They’re just regulated and recorded. So if you find an antique one or say there is an estate sale because somebody died, I would love to be able to find one one day, one that’s been around long enough that legally it’s perfectly fine to own. Maybe not bring in and out of the country, but still it would be nice.

Aren’t indigenous peoples of the arctic allowed to hunt seal? They might be allowed to sell the skins depending on the jurisdiction🤷🏻‍♂️

Yes they are . It was the indigenous people that reversed the total ban on Seal in Europe . That is where most seal skin for sporrans come from .

I've never bought anything fur before, and I'm wondering if I bought something made of bovine fur, can you pick a color? My family raises cattle, and I'd love some black/red fur

I don't think that's done anywhere anymore. That was done with harp seals in Canada because they were white as juveniles and got darker as adults. I was privileged (seriously, it's invitation only) to watch Alaska Natives harvest seals. They only harvest the bachelor males. 80% of male fur seals don't reproduce so they can harvest the bachelor males without affecting the overall numbers. They are allowed to keep and sell the skins of the seals they harvest for subsistence but there isn't a harvest just for the skins. Unfortunately, fur seal numbers are declining but it's due to over-fishing, not to the Natives harvesting them.

+USAKiltsOfficial *Thanks for the manufacturer perspective.* Sealskin is unavailable for new craft in the United States; swinehide and oxhide are acceptable substitutes. *Addition:* If I had all materials legal for a Dress _Sporran,_ I'd make it beaver with a stainless-steel cantle.
