Today, getting what you need is as easy as a trip to the store. From food to clothing, energy, medicine, and so much more, Andy George will discover what it takes to make everything from scratch. His mission is to understand the complex processes of manufacturing that is often taken for granted and do it all himself. Each week he’s traveling the world to bypass the modern supply chain in order to harvest raw materials straight from the source. Along the way, he’s answering the questions you never thought to ask.

In NZ we have a large occurence of naturally green-ish obsidian which transitions to a deep transparent auburn colour at a place called Mayor Island. because it's so unique it's protected, but the green is a result of iron minerals like pyroxene and olivine in the obsidian deposits, similar in chemical composition to the obsidian found on other intermediate rhyolite volcanics :)

The algorithm knows nothing about quality; it is not smart enough to understand what it means to be good, it only takes basic things like what objects it detects in the video, what is spoken, the words of the title description etc, and how many people watched it, for how long and so on.

Were you trying obsidian from a single source? There is a great variety between sources - some are more homogeneous than others, and there are two basic formulas - one that produces obsidians more black in color, the other green (depending on the elemental makeup). Some sources are not good for making tools (even though the obsidian looks good), others fair in their workability, and some sources are very good. Many obsidian sources still have trapped gasses (making them more opaque), which would cause the shattering. I would suggest some more background reading on obsidian. It may be internally homogeneous within a source, but there can be huge difference between sources. The type of flux you use can also have a huge impact on the characteristics of the glass.

I believe the problem is that glass is much more consistent and uniform material than obsidian is. You should, instead of adding more flux, try to melt it in, say, stainless steel crucible and keep it molten for a long time so that all impurities have time to settle up or down. Once the impurities are settled, you can remove them and then try to glassblow "pure" obsidian. Thumbs up if you think this is worth a shot
@cobalt1754
@cobalt1754 5 лет назад
Furnace glass is generally melted at 2150 degrees, at least at my school, so it'd eat through steel. They'd probably have to tweak the formula to be more similar to that of glass for it to be stable and uniform enough to blow..
@iridium9512
@iridium9512 5 лет назад
Yes, flux is added to lower the melting point. But glass does not need to be fully molten, as it will soften much before stainless steel starts to deform. But if this is still a problem, I'm sure he can find get one of the higher quality crucibles which will not crack under constant high heat.

Star Wars books featured some interesting Sith dagger made from volcanic glass, called Shikkar - in the emerged culture of the forgotten Sith tribe, it was common to kill adversary persons of influence, but it was also common to assasinate them with a expensive, craftsy, pretty glass dagger to express respect - death with a shikkar was considered a gift and a agonizing death. The dagger was specially tempered to splinter in glass shards once being twisted in the wound, so it was explicitely one-use weapon destined to the victim and no-one else. But - it wasn't explained how the tempering was done or how it was sharpened. Maybe it was also tempered so it would reveal edges after being apllying a hit on a calculated breaking point during creation or by the customer to be impressed. The second breaking point will be probably inside the grip to make the dagger blade shatter after twisting and not to hurt the hand of the assassin.

I have enjoyed your videos for quite a while! I have a theory of why your first obsidian video blew up. It's the connection to game of thrones and dragon glass being equated to obsidian. Essentially I think that since that is a major aspect of the lore from a super popular series right now RU-vid may have bumped it because its trendy in pop culture.

Question, not sure if it would work, but could you make a Prince Rupert Drop of pure obsidian then when you shattered it use that material to smelt for the blowing or pouring, as it seems to go to a much finer powder than when you just crush it, or would there be too much of a change the the material like crystallization of over heated aluminum

I would love a knife loke that. I wasstationed in far east Turkey in the early 80's. They called it the rock. We had a boulder of obsidian on a concrete pediltal and Im gonna guess it weighed nearly a ton. When we leave they break of a piece of obsidian and put it in a brass or bronze pestel and urn and give you a Russian pocket watch as a momento and thanks for service in such a remote location. I was honored to serve. All of it was stolen and Ive been heart broken since. It would very special to me to have some obsidian in raw form and some made into a knife.

Sorry if this is a duplicate, but at 722 comments, I'm not going to read them all. Look up Pyroxene, the stranger in the fire. Then look up chrome diopside. These minerals are second to the deepest, hottest, highest pressure mineral in volcanic material (according to Bowen's reaction series [independent of the feldspar branch]). That green you saw reminded me so much of the diopside samples that I have, that I just had to comment. To be clear (as glass, or thereabouts), I watched this video a few days ago, yet had to come back when I found what I hope is a reasonable explanation. These experiments with obsidian have been fascinating, and I really appreciate the curiosity that goes into them. I hope for these obsidian experiments, you get (or have gotten) feedback from real geologists. But, the final upshot, this stuff that us amateurs have been calling volcanic glass is full of impurities--as if you haven't already had that thought. So how curious: you can knap it, but any kind of melting will have to deal with the other minerals that formed fairly deep, hot, and at high pressure--which might behave funny, and runny, at surface temperature and pressure. Go figure.

Can certain substances be added to the obsidian/ flux mix to improve it's behavior when hot?

Take it to a water jet cutter. They can put a nice clean edge on it, and super sharp too!!!

I wonder if you can make a stone mold or something to cook obsidian and crack it open, like clay would that work. So I would make the clay mold, then put sandy obsidian and press it firmly and cook the obsidian from the clay.

I'm not sure it would be something you would do, but I wonder if the issues with the melting of the obsidian would be resolved by making a mix that is chemically "identical" and starting from that and not a chunk of obsidian.

you might be able to make a blade by melting the obsidian and letting it sit and cool in an preheated metal plate with an elongated V shaped mold with an matching metal wedge. once cooled slowly to an sold take out of the mold gingerly and chip-away at the unwanted parts to form the blade. make shore that its make sure it's braced when you strike it. this might work for the blade part of the obsidian.

This is really cool, but would you just cut/grind/polish an amazing obsidian blade using lapidary tools?
