I was so proud of myself when I got "Something" and David didn't. The main reason I knew it is because I play the bass line all the time. And that walkup happens right before the best part of the bass line -- the fill right after the lyric "I don't want to leave her now."
David, this is what I read from wilipedia about In my Life: "At that time, Lennon had not decided what instrument to use, but he subsequently asked George Martin to play a piano solo, suggesting "something Baroque-sounding".[2] Martin wrote a Bach-influenced piece that he found he could not play at the song's tempo. On 22 October, the solo was recorded with the tape running at half speed, so when played back at normal pace the piano was twice as fast and an octave higher, solving the performance challenge and also giving the solo a unique timbre, reminiscent of a harpsichord."
I had guessed that one correctly due to the Baroque sounding. I had already known that bit of trivia from being such an avid watcher of any Beatle related docs, and books.
Paul was a genius at adding piano, keyboard, mellotron, and other parts to lift up the others’ songs. I don’t think he gets enough credit for that Examples are A Day in the Life, Sexy Sadie, Strawberry Fields Forever, Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, Come Together, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Any Time At All (middle eight), etc
I guessed Hey Jude but with very little confidence, and when David said For No One, I thought that sounded at least as believable and usually when that's the case, it means he's right and I'm wrong. But not this time I guess lol
Funny thing, I did hear the singing on the first listen, but couldn't make out the lyrics or melody. Then, when I realized which song it is, I could "hear" it clearly on the second listen.
1 - no idea 2 - no idea 3 - IN MY LIFE 4 - COME TOGETHER 5 - DRIVE MY CAR - WRONG 6 - no idea 7 - GOLDEN SLUMBERS 8 - DRIVE MY CAR - RIGHT! 9 - SOMETHING 10 - no idea 11 - LET IT BE - UGH 12 - HELLO GOODBYE 6/12...tough one!
Haha, I also said For No One because of the chord progression. Apart from confusing You Won't See Me with I Want To Tell You (because of the dissonance in the chords), I got everything right. So 10/12.
I got those mixed up, too lol but I still wasn’t sure because the piano’s timbre sounded more like a Rubber Soul track, I just couldn’t place it as You Won’t See Me lol
Yes, 8/12 for me too. The Penny lane one was maybe the most difficult - according to some some sources there may be 4 or 5 piano overdubs on the track (including one by John!)
The Hey Jude one tricked me a lot! It's really the same progression as for no one😅 i think a way we could use to differ both is using the fact the "for no one" piano part is more stacatto than Hey Jude's one
You could do "Guess the beatles song from the cover version", and hear a few seconds of a cover. Or, "Guess the Beatles track from the studio chatter", where you just hear one or two word snippets from studio chatter included in the song.
Old bloke getting into keyboards and I love your channel - a young guy who likes great music…who’d have thunk it 👍🏻😀 love the quizzes and chord progression videos 😊
12/12 My love for Rubber Soul really helped in this video. I’ve been getting better at these as they come. I hope we get a second version of each instrument cause these are so fun
Got all but 2 ("Something" and Hey Jude") "You Won't See Me," good guess on the Diminished chord being linked to George. I knew it wasn't "For No One" on "Hey Jude" when I tried to sing the melody over it, but had no idea what it was going to be. Great quiz!
Good one! 9/12 for me. I got "The Word" from the guitar part. Lol. Got "Hey Jude" because it's my fave Beatles song, and about the only song I can play on the piano.
Man, this one was hard. I only got five. (1, 3, 4, 5, and 8). And I probably wouldn't have gotten #5 without John's iconic rhythm, which was the giveaway.
Wow, Jon Smith's Voyages! 😮 Jon and his family happen to be very close friends of mine!! Not only is he super talented, he is also a genuine, incredible person. I hope he gains a ton more followers from this exposure. PS - despite being a HUGE Beatles fan, my score on this was abysmal.
I got 4/12, which believe me is good for me. I was very pleased to get Hey Jude though! When I heard it I thought the rhythm sounded like Hey Jude, but when you said the two songs you thought it might be I thought “Ah, OK, close but no cigar”. So it was great to find out that it was Hey Jude after all. These quizzes are great fun, even if I don’t get many of them right. 👍
This is amazing, thanks. We all know Ringo on drums, John and George on guitars and Paul on drums, but they, under George Martin's guidance incorporated keyboards all over their catalogue. Lady Madonna, Let it Be, You Never Give Me Your Money, The Long and Winding Road, intros to songs like Ob La Di, While My Guitar Gently Weeps ,Lovely Rita and others. Plus the horns and woodwinds in songs like Got to Get You Into My Life, All You Need is Love, Strawberry Fields Forever, When I'm 64, the strings in Eleanor Rigby, She's Leaving Home and Good Night, and George's sitar and other Eastern instruments in Love You To, Within You and Without You and Norwegian Wood all help to define an original and unmatched sound that will last as long as we listen to music. The Beatles stand alone at the top and there is no one like them.
You did better than I did, but I was proud that I got “Something”! Also, I made the same wrong guess as you on “Hey Jude” (we both thought it was “For No One”).
I didn’t do too badly surprisingly. Not 100% though. Much easier than the other quizzes. I think it is because the keyboard instruments really seem to stand out to me in Beatles songs.
This is going to drive me nuts now. That little slice of Hey Jude with that chord progression sounds so much like a song that John was messing around with after the Beatles - was it part of Real Love? Grrr. It was from one of those home audio tapes he did.
The interesting thing about the "Come Together" isolated electric piano part you played in its sample, it's actually just the way it sounds alone on the original record wtihout the other instruments surrounding it but it plays right after the guitar solo (instrumental) break and before the third verse so it probably might be hard to remember for those who haven't heard the song so many times because of its point in the song near the end but not quite the end.
1). George Martin: Good Day Sunshine. 2) George Martin Here Come The Sun 3) George Martin In My life 4) Come Together George Martin 5) The Word. George Martin 6) Penny Lane George Martin 7) Sleep Pretty Darling/ Golden Slumbers. George Martin 8) Baby can you drive my Car. McCartney 10) Something. Possibly McCartney, but could be Lennon 11) Dunno 12) For no One....I was wrong 13) Hello Goodbye McCartney. Is that "The Poodles" at the end?
I think if you said "Carry that Weight" instead of "Golden Slumbers", you can allow yourself a point (I did! 😁)...it's not entirely clear where one ends and the next begins...
2 curious things... Song 10. I thought it was "I want to tell you" because the keys felt as though they had that syncopation and seemed to be played quite in a quite hard staccato way. Second; basically "I want to tell you" has completely recycled that chord progression and style from "you wont see me" changing the syncopation slightly
Can't believe I got the Carry That Weight vibes from the portion between it and Golden Slumbers lol I think that was the best guess I had in this video (I'm counting it as correct - close enough haha)
I believe I got 8/12 as well. I was pretty stunned that I didn't get "Penny Lane", given that I play it all the time - someone mentioned that the original track has like 4 or 5 piano tracks, so I guess I'm used to playing one of the other ones.
At 7:03, on song number 11, you thought 2 songs, so did I. But you guessed "For No One" or "Hello Goodbye". My guesses were, because of the chords, "A Day in the Life" or "Let It Be". I can't wait to see what it is, so I'll play the video again now. EDIT: What?? "Hey Jude"??
I found this one to be an easier one, maybe because they didn't use keyboard as often. And I nearly got them all... BUT I was entirely flummoxed by You Won't See Me.
You can often clearly hear the voice/ singing "blead over" in to the instrumental, like in "something" , so you dont even have to guess. The answer is right there. Strange that David doesn't hear that? He's got head phones and everything.
This is the hardest one yet, imo, since the piano is less foreground than the other instruments, typically. And for 11, I too thought "For No One", so you're in decent company lol
This was a really fun one! It sounds like isolating the piano track didn't go so well for some of these though :( like "The Word" you could clearly still hear the guitar, which I think helped me get it. And "Penny Lane" and one or two others sounded so processed and garbled that the original timbre of the piano part didn't come through.
How I went: Good Day Sunshine❌ Here Comes the Sun✅ In My Life✅ Come Together✅ The Word✅ Penny Lane❌ Golden Slumbers✅ Drive My Car❌ (shocked that I missed this one) Something✅ (this is my favourite song, of course I was going to recognise it) You Won't See Me❌ Hey Jude❌ Hello, Goodbye❌ 6/12
That *was* fun! I was 9 for 12: missed the same ones you did, David, except I got "Something." OK, all that's left is to ID Beatles songs based on...cowbell! 😅
Oh wow! I got a freaking 10/12! The abundance of songs from Rubber Soul was a huge advantage for me (aside from the piano focus of this quiz). I failed at Penny Lane (haven't listened to that song in a while) and Hey Jude (I don't know how I got it wrong and now I'm disappointed with myself).
