As a jazz and orchestra trombonist, I feel the orchestral tenor had the best sound out of all of them

The bass sackbut and the alto suffered a lot (although the sackbut more so), since most of these excerpts aren't really meant for them. The PBone is really just to mess around or teach someone who can't lift a brass peashooter. Between the orchestral tenor (large bore, I presume) and the jazz horn, it depends a bit on the chosen music, as it was pretty close in Bolero, but the orchestral tenor sounded better in general. Overall, I'd rank the orchestral tenor first, with the jazz horn a bit behind. I'd rank the alto after, then the bass sackbut, then finally the PBone.

I can definitely tell a sound difference. My favorite is the orchestral tenor it just gives a bit more of a richer sound.

Arabesque is the only way to test if the trombone has agility, I’m surprised the plastic did well since it doesn’t look like it’s mean to be played fast

They all sound good accept the p-bone but orchestral is the best. Granted the p-bone might sound iffy just because of the material. PS great job. My fellow trombonist friends and I are huge fans!

Orchestral tenor, then the jazz horn, alto, pbone and sackbut, in that order. You make the phone sound like trombone-like instrument. I've played an orchestral tenor since college (1979 graduate) and have taken to bass trombone the last 4 years. I'm currently played an independent rotor bass. I would have loved to hear a comparison played with a bass. When I'm playing in band and we get a unison passage above the staff, I who their butts with that big sound! Honestly, Bolero on a smaller bore horn is probably closer to what Ravel was hearing in his head. Plastic is great for those outdoor gigs on freezing days...but suck otherwise. Love the Bass Sackbut.....would love to hear some typical Bass Sackbut parts on it, conforming to the horn...likewise for the Alto....which sounds great but isn't typical for those pieces.... The Orchestral horn is the one you seem most comfortable on...and sounds the best as a result.

The “jazz trombone” is a Conn 4H and I have one!! My little peashooter held it down 🥹🥹🥹

You must remember that we are hearing it not from the horn but our speakers, after being digitally cropped. As a trumpet player and music teacher, I could hear clearly the differences, but I also listen through my studio system. Having heard all but the Sackbut live , the differences are vast.

It's hilarious how drastic the sound difference was switching from plastic to small-bore brass. Although I have to say you really sound 'at home' on your large-bore in any style!

i love the pbone so much, like the way it sounds and the whole look of it. one of my squad leaders (low brass) plays the pbone during marching season and its so cool to hear, it really projects her sound and sounds good during slow, fast, jazz, and any piece we play.

“Orchestral” sounded best to me. I’m not even always a fan of the modern “dark concert sound” but that was nice sounding horn.

As a sackbut player (albeit tenor rather than bass), the biggest difference in approach is that with the sackbut, with an historically correct, flat rimmed, shallow mouthpiece, and the small bore size, you have to blow a lot less air through it.

Plastic was better than I expected, though I'm not sure I would pay 200 $ for it, probably better to find a second hand one for that prize. Question: Is the plastic one harder or easier to play?

My friend determined that a lot of the plasticy sound of the PBone can be attributed to the plastic mouthpiece. Maybe try a different one?

Man, as a Horn player I REALLY wish I could eventually play Arabesque but sadly my band is nowhere near good enough to pull it off. Guess I'll have to wait till college :sadge:

Stuff like this is why I'm thankful I have studio monitors. Never heard a plastic trombone before; but it's better than I would have imagined. Honestly, for a kid that may not stick with it, that's probably the way to go for a beginning student. The orchestral tenor has SOOOO many more rich overtones than any of the rest. To illustrate the differences more clearly, try some lower registers. Then the bass will likely come into it's own.

The Edwards wins for me. Just seems the most capable and the large bore gives it the most transferable sound. Not that I'm an Edwards fanboy (actually a XO Brass fanboy) but I have always favored that large bore tenor sound since my King 4BF days.

It's clear which one is the one you play the most -- the bass sackbut. Kidding, but I'd be interested to hear the difference a proper mouthpiece makes on the plastic instrument in this comparison. Most people say it turns it from a pile of garbage to decently playable.

I think the Plastic Trombone and Alto Trombone sound very different, but the Orchestral Tenor, Jazz, and Bass Sackbutt sound extremely identical.
