How far can you push a Power Macintosh Beige G3 desktop from 1997? Well, today continues our adventure! In this second episode, we're swapping in the G4 processor from a Power Mac "Yikes!" G4, and overclocking it! That's right, we're trying to build the mythical Beige G4! But will it actually work?
Check out Part 1 of the series here, if you haven't already: • Combining two 1997 Bei...
You'll need 2mm jumpers to perform the overclock, such as these: amzn.to/2VLKATO

This was another excellent video! With each part of this series, I am like a little kid on the 24th of December waiting for the morning of Christmas. Now, I see what you are trying to do ... take a G3 desktop using your definition "a CPU box that is placed on top of the computer's desk with room for a monitor to be located above it" and turn it into a model that Apple Computer never made, a system that is a G4 desktop with tons of extras (i.e. USB 2.0, Fire-wire, etc.)

Thank you! Yes I think we can totally build the professional grade G4 desktop that Apple never made!

ZIF sockets are the industry name for any of those types of sockets, they are contrary to a socket where you need to push the pin into the socket. Rather ZIF sockets have a tension mechanism that applies force to the side of the pin. This isn't branding by apple.

The term ZIF or Zero Insertion Force isn't an Apple thing, it's just what that type of socket is called. Up until the Intel 386 we generally used LIF (or Low Insertion Force) sockets. These required pushing the processor down into the socket, and required the use of tools to remove once installed.
@esseferio
@esseferio 4 года назад
Actually; I've always been a PC user since the mid nineties, and I did hear about ZIF sockets back in the day, certainly with Pentiums, and probably with 486 even.

Came here to say the same thing. This wasn't AppleSpeak, this was an industry standard term for that kind of socket.

Ah, I didn't realize that ZIF was a standard term for that kind of socket. Here I was blaming Apple marketing, who as we all know is always completely reasonable (cough Velocity Engine cough)

@@ActionRetro Chris already touched on it, but it was a way to avoid paying Motorola (Freescale now) trademark fees. IBM still, to this day on its IBM i and other mainframes/Xbox 360/PS3, calls it the VMX extension set. Even though all members of the AIM alliance had rights to it, only Motorola/Freescale owned the name.
@aeonjoey3d
@aeonjoey3d 3 года назад
yep, even some 386's and Overdrive CPUs used ZIF sockets, the first Pentiums actually though used "Slot 1" which was like a nintendo-cartridge style edge connector (contacts on both sides of the edge of a PCB) so those were actually not ZIF sockets since you had to exert force to insert them. :P

I had forgotten about the RAM density thing. I have 6 hundred something in mine but it’s RAM salvaged from a busticated Graphite iMac. I hope my sending you down the reset the logic board rabbit hole didn’t take up too much of your time. BTW, Apple marketing didn’t coin the term zero insertion force. They probably used it to differentiate it from PCs but it if a chip can be dropped into a socket (unlike the chips in, say, a Commodore 64 which have to be pressed in) then it’s a ZIF socket.

1. Installing 256MB low density ram sticks will get you the full 768MB. I ran into the exact same issue. 2. I’ve read that changing the bus speed on these machines can cause issues with the floppy drive. I stuck with a solid 400mhz overclock on my 266mhz G3 and my system has been very stable. I’ll have to give a G4 CPU upgrade a shot and see what happens. 3. I’d HIGHLY suggest drilling a hole in the case for the eject button on the Zip disk. IDK why, but mine is the biggest piece of crap and has a 50% chance of mounting the first disk I insert after startup. The hole I drilled was just slightly bigger than the floppy and CD eject holes, but it looks pretty factory.

It was called ZIF (zero insertion force) on the pc platform too... You really should scrape that black interface material, lap the base of the HS with fine sand paper and use some good thermal paste on it.
@fsfs555
@fsfs555 3 года назад
That particular ZIF was actually first used in an RS/6000 for a 604-based card with a separate L2 cache card. Judging by the pads on the beige G3's logic board, this may have been a consideration for these machines until they decided to change direction when Steve Jobs came back (these were originally not going to be high-end machines; they were intended to be clone-friendly CHRP-compliant boards like the old LPX-40/Power Mac 4400 and a proper 6-slot machine, PowerExpress, was in development to replace the 9600). The beige G3 can use the G4 CPU directly but the B&W won't because Apple locked it out in firmware (which is why you need one of the upgrade purveyors' utilities to patch the FW to enable such upgrades). Just check your VRM and ensure it's not a Royal-branded unit or it may burn out your G4 or even an upgraded G3. Also some of the early beige G3s had logic boards that supported 83MHz bus speeds. It was going to be an option originally but Steve nixed it in a drive to simplify product line-ups, so we officially only have 66MHz. Although the 83MHz speed doesn't work with the fastest (>500MHz) G4 upgrades, only 66MHz which is why you have to clock down the B&W and Yikes! G4s to install those, it's a very good boost for

As I recall, from the 1990s when I was in college and had a PB1400c and had G3 envy, people in universities here and there mede “supercomputing” clusters of G3s, just by hooking up a load of them by ethernet and running a software that shared a heavy computational task over all the processors. Does anyone else remember that? If that is something that was done then, perhaps someone who did it back then can help Sean and his shenanigans friends to set up a supercomputer for the next VCF and we’ll get a fun video out of it! 😊

actually it is called zif on computer too. the nes 72 pin connector is even called zif. this is what the name of it is and not something apple came up with now. the jumper block is a example or without zif and bending pins on a cpu like that would be bad.
@jammi__

The PC sockets of the same style were indeed ZIF too, and called ZIF and were called that long before G3s. Has nothing to do with Apple specifically, so it's purely ignorance from your end.

@auteurfiddler8706 3 года назад
It never occurred to me to buy new jumpers. I simply pulled the old ones out of the white block and pushed them in to the new positions in the block. This was when I acquired better G3 processors for my Beiges. I never found a G4 that fit the G3 slot, but if I had, I think I would have left the G4 Yikes in it's original computer since the Beige has no real advantage over a blue and white or a Yikes or a Sawtooth. And some disadvantages.

@Astinsan
@Astinsan 3 года назад
No actually that’s not what happened. ZIF is an industry term used to describe any socket that has a latching pin system. These have been around since the 70s and it wasn’t Apple that came up with the zero insertion force it’s been around for years. The PC market had the same term used on their sockets also because it’s an industry term they just talked more about the socket type because of how many pins it had and how many pins it had would determine what processors he could put on the board that’s why the socket number was the most prominent thing. Just a fyi ... enjoying the video.. A lot of machines from this. Use the low density Sims because they were the cheapest and the sockets couldn’t read the backside of the Sims because the sockets were for the cheapest memory of the time these are home machines. I don’t think it was until 9293 that we started seeing double density memory then EDO memory and then ram bus and DDR after that

Do the clock jumpers affect the bus speed or the multiplier? Since you ended up with 366, I'm guessing it's the multiplier? (66 * 5.5 or thereabouts) Also are you gonna talk about your experience with Puma in any future installments? I'm sure it's been interesting.
@ActionRetro

Oh yeah, the top three jumpers control the bus speed. As for Puma - it's a very buggy and unoptimized version of OSX. More like beta quality and rushed to market - it's interesting that 10.3 is generally faster than 10.1 and 10.2!

Nope ZIF or Zero Insertion Force slot is called a ZIF slot for PCs as well as it is the official and proper name of the slot. These machines only accepted single sided RAM chips. If you put double sided dims in it the machine won't recognise it. It's just an Apple irregular oddity. You can have that much RAM but it needs to be single sided DIMMs. As to the CPU speed you need to change the jumpers (In fact it's the same as the Power Mac 7600 for jumpers).
