Yes, but they should know. Enjoy making art is a thing, know about the foundation of fine art is another thing which artist should be aware of. If they are not, they believe fine art is easy as they could possibly attend and master any time they please.

I think what they mean by "ability to see 3D objects" they refer to constructive drawing skill which is to asses what you see as a 3D object and break down the shape in 3D regardless of the 2D work we are producing. Not to actually lose ones ability to navigate the world in 3D. But it is true, copying from 2D teaches shape while 3D teaches form. To work exclusively from copies create works that lack an understanding of 3D form and construction. Which very hard to unlearn if one is already used to easier results by copying 2D.

Your can copy anatomy diagrams and 3D app pictures, but after that draw the same images from memory from different points of view several times till you remember them. This way, you will learn, not mindlessly copy

You can learn copying by copying. Drawing rules are not the same

Thanks for asking. The difference is the same as living in a real house and trying to enter a 2D picture of it. If you learn by copying flat images or photos, your brain will be rewired to judge 2D proportions, shapes and values. When you face a real 3D object, like an apple, for example, there are no flat shapes, but foreshortened round surfaces, which you would not know how to depict. Flat pictures will not teach you how to deal with foreshortening, angles in perspective, rules of chiaroscuro, linear and aerial perspective. Without such constructive drawing principles you won't be able to draw skilfully from life, memory and imagination, but only copy pictures. That is why so many "artists" cannot draw and only copy.

Good drawing skills matter for drawing anything you see or imagine. Your question sounds like "Does learning the complete English alphabet matter if I plan to use words that contain only "A, B, and D" characters?
