Great vid, thanks. I live spitting distance from Teesside Airport and monitor it with the Kenwood TS-2000 in my shack but it will be handy to use my UV-5R for the FM traffic.
Interesting post thanks. For what its worth you can't hear am on an FM set but you can hear FM on an am set that let's you fine tune the frequency. By tuning a bit off channel the frequency change of the FM translates to signal strength change so decodes as (roughish) speech :)
I can hear some airband clearly on mine down to 128 Mhz, but I had to offset all the frequencies a little (+0.005). On some frequencies it's muffled or one sided and with the volume turned up you get a loud crack with the squelch closing. ATIS always sounds good which is handy for the weather. I use it as a cheap scanner and found ~18 UHF channels for MCR using a cheap SDR. It's a shame they don't repeat the approach frequency so I could hear what's flying around nearby too.
Just bought the Baofeng UV9r plus last month from wish. Really great Ham radio. Schiphol Airport ATC loud and clear. Even the Stena Ferries good quality to hear at Hook of Holland. My Daughter lives 6KM away from me in a big city and we can talk loud and clear no interference. And that for 89 euros for 2 UV 9R plus. Great buy😊
Hi, I've just ordered a Baofeng UV-RC+ and like the info that you are sharing and a couple of questions from a noob, is there an ATC site that lists the uplinks etc and does your Eye Poker mini whip have any advantages over the aerial that comes with the UV-5R ? Well explained info and a new sub and upthumbed .
Do you know if you can change the setting on baofeng somehow, ie. Make the time out backlight stay on longer than 10 seconds and open it up to more frequencies
I've got a uv-5r stock 136/400MHZ antenna and I'm picking up Manchester airport on this frequency and I live 20+ miles away. Can't believe it I can hear the tower and the planes comming in to land very clear if I hold the radio right and keep my phone away from it. It is quite high ground where I live but I wasn't expecting to get anything.
I was able to modify the frequency range to 126Mhz to 272Mhz with a gap at 180 to 190 and then 380Mhz to 543Mhz. I hear a lot now! One can listen to the AM frequencies but they are a bit on the staticy side and low volume. But FM has a huge reservoir of frequencies to listen to. You might even be able to push the transmit button on PMR446 and LPR433 and nobody will know what radio you are using. If you get the amateur radio foundation license, you can even push that tempting little transmit button on 2 meter frequencies and 70 centimeter frequencies. You can listen to 4 meter frequencies as well using the broadcast radio receive feature. It can be set to 66Mhz to 88Mhz and the 4 meter conversations can be heard. I may yet get that pesky foundation license.
Do these radios have the capability to transmit while receiving airport frequencies? Looking for a cheap and durable scanner and I think I have found it, but I don’t want to accidentally transmit a message..
@@ItzjoshyVQ_37 Why do you think I said that lol, taught I had my 4 inches on but it was the 12 inches, i poke my eye so hard that I think I hit the back of my head, and it was dark, my friend didn't need is radio to hear my scream:)
Hello there. May i ask what is this BAOFENG radio model(or type) that you hold in hand and what is this antenna on the radio? Is it NAGOYA maybe? I need a exact detailed information; what BAOFENG this is and what is this antenna. Thanks alot. Greetings from Croatia(Hrvatska)
I have been listening to Manchester airport this morning ground and tower a lot of planes unable to take off and a few go arounds and a good few stacked up over st Helens area
I use it to get Alaska Airlines to find out when a family member comes in. I wish it did true AM airband, I currently have to lend a radio when I fly my little floatplane. Not going to spend $200 on airband when I end up using mostly marine FM.
I have just bought my new baofeng uv-5rt and never used one before, i have used the scan function but cannot pick up anthing at all does it has to set up first before i can start to lishen in on things?
I have a Baofeng 888s radio and i was wodering if i could tune into my local airports FM uplink i live around 9KM (5.5 miles) away from the airport and was wondering if i was to purchase a NA771 i would be able to tune into the frequency using Chirp and programming the frequencies ? Many thanks Louis
Are there any good frequencies that are free to use without a license on this radio? I have a foundation ham license but a friend hasn’t and I’d like to use them when out on bikes
Motorcycle or bicycle?? For a motorcycle just buy a Sena for your helmet, speakers go behind your cheek pads and a mic goes near your mouth and you can talk to your friends in a private call or you can listen to the radio but not transmit
Hi, does anyone know what model this is ? I am looking for something to listen to Aircraft on and don't particularity want to pay a huge amount and this looks like a nice alternative. Thanks.
Last I checked in America it’s 108-136Mhz and I’ve tested a UV5R and it will transmit from about 134.125 to 173.995 (done with a dummy load antenna) but the issue is from 134.125 to 136 its FM being transmitted but the frequency I was on they somehow could understand me
Thx Sir for the insight of what a BaoFeng HT radio is capable of, I recently bought I suspect is a variant of the UV5R. Identical every way in functionality but came with different branding, shell & exaggerated specs, I am in the market a better quality HAM radio with true 8-10 watts transmission capability, AM/FM receiver & possibly IP57 water resistance, please tell me what's your opinion?
if you use chirp you can wideband a baofeng my UV-9R plus starts at 128.000 to 177.997 VHF and 384.00 to 523.997 UHF here is the link on how to do it on uv5r radios www.miklor.com/uv5r/UV5R-Expand.php
you can edit the firmware so you unlock wider bands, but you cant really transmit on those extremes because the radio cant output anything at those frequency.
Hi, I know this is an old vid, but if your still monitoring it I’d like to ask a question. While at the sea side I often see helicopters flying out to riggings. Will this radio pick up their traffic. Thanks 😊 Eamonn.
Nice little backdoor. Not sure if that would work her in the USA but one thing is for sure . If your in your car near an airport with a radio u going to jail. Lol. Great vid
Hi all, recently bought the baofeng uv 5r as I'm wanting to get into this as a hobby however I haven't a clue how to programme channels or frequency haha.I'm based near Preston.Any advice would be great.
No, because general airband is not covered in standard Bofeng HT setup. No, because airband usually use AM mode. Yes, if you able to extend the HT's freq range. about to 125 MHz. Partially yes, you can tune to certain airband frequency,, but the sound level is very low and need to crank up the volume. It just like listening to a whispering between aircraft's pilot and ATC's operator. .. BTW, I am enjoying listening to airband using USB SDR dongele...
Hi , thank you for the video. I have baofeng radios and am a licenced UAV remote pilot and I have my AROC aeronautical radio operators certificate. I am supposed to be able to listen and transmit on the CTAF frequency when conducting services near the airport - is this possible with the baofeng BF-F8HP radio? Thank you
As long as you respect the frequency range, In an actual emergency without a phone, even without a ham license. All is good. Just remember your meters and the frequency spectrum.
You need to clarify. The FCC defines emergency as immediate safety of life or protection of property when no other means of communications is available (97.403). This rules out most common emergencies. If you hear a noise outside, call 911. If your car breaks down, walk to a phone. If your house is on fire, go to a neighbor's house. This rule also doesn't justify the use of illegal/uncertified radio equipment (a Baofeng on aircraft frequencies, etc). You can still be heavily fined for such - not for the emergency call, but for the use of that radio.
@@grob25 .. Actually, I do. I own a lot of radio equipment, but what has that got to do with anything I said? The FCC rules are very specific, with this rule even explained further on the FCC website. Before spouting crap that will get people into trouble, I strongly suggest researching those rules.
@@Francois_Dupont .. However, the radio frequencies aren't a toy. With those frequencies more crowded than ever before, they're a valuable, even critical, resource that must be regulated and protected to avoid interference and disruptions. Besides, the FCC (or whatever regulating agency) gave us a plentiful chunk (CB, Ham, FRS, etc) to play with.
how can you listen if it's all on am mhz I noticed Manchester freqency chart and non at your showing the numbers u showed and said if I'm doing wrong let me know.if I type in canceled number it comes up cancelled .please explain
Can i ask if you could message me would be nice if I were to buy a radio like this can i use strictly use it to speak tk my friend who may live about 20mils from me?
Hiya mate its blimen raining again. Is there a way to stop the mon button setting the alarm. I thought there was a dedicated alarm button. do i need to program it? On a UV-5R
Hi Ringway, I've a really bog standard set of beginner Qs but can't find much online that answers it in simple terms. I've a Baofeng uv5r... and two other smaller baofengs which talk to each other on set channel mode. The smaller baofengs don't talk to the bigger - that being the case - here's the DOH q - in channel mode can you only talk to radios of same brand and model. Also, emergency frequencies are published online with 7 digits... is the 7th digit a fraction of a Hz? So I guess you may feel free to doing a 101 vid for total noobs, I also think it might help a few oldies stuck indoors in the next months. Thanks Mike
Ditto mate. Im a complete novice and had my baofeng delivered this morning. A 101 for dummies on using these would be great. Only down the road in Ellesmere Port any local or north west groups you'd recommend? Cheers, Chris
@@EportChris well, found out that if the uv5r did chat to the channel baofengs it would be illegal. Two difference classes of radio. Best group I tallked to were the advertised local groups running transmitters, they can be found online. Getting a licence is an option to join in. You can listen to groups without a licence. My idea was for emergencies and feedback I got was that National Radio would be broadcasting that anyways on the FM mode on the uv5R. So... radio licence or not.. useful to know working abroad and such. Ham licence radio NW is in a little demise I would say.. if I worked in UK more I would probably start it up properly, as it looks to me like a perfect way to talk outside of b youtube and what not. It would hard to monetize that or censor it, so, go 'ed and get a licence and start talking! More the merrier. I'm still deciding on working abroad again or not, so it's still in my mind. Topics to talk about are endless, especially around here!!! Some are even positive. :-) Mick
Right I've got a proper random radio question but if anyone will know the answer it'll be Ringway Manchester! About 20 years ago I was scanning the dial on a Roberts FM radio and right at the top of the dial I heard a couple chatting. It was clear they were having a phone conversation, and let's just say they were 'enjoying' themselves. I tried tuning my other FM radio into it at the same time but it wouldn't pick it up. To this day I still can't figure out what I was hearing. I assume that my radio was picking up slightly beyond the normal 108mhz. Could it have been an old analogue cordless phone? Frequencies for those though seem to be way off this. Maybe, especially given the explicit content, it was a bugging device which was tapping their phone by a private detective? I've really no idea but curious if you have any ideas on it.
The UV-83 with AM airband is out now £45....got one today.....quick test not impressed....overloaded with a roof antenna....bit on the deaf side on airband no real instruction book....early days yet. Love to hear the views of others. Nick in cheshire.
Is this technically illegal now (in the UK I mean)? I know they made some changes in the last few years in terms of wording of what you can listen too (something like "transmissions intended for you"?). Which is a shame, specially when it comes to ATC as its a great way to learn the brevity if your considering or starting flying! Also its just pretty intresting!
Hello great channel what would you say is the best hand held choice radio for £100 or less just wanting 1 for fun maybe for listening to Leeds airport and truckers on motorway and general public thanks for you help
On vhf air band you can use slope detection using fm to listen to an am signal but you need to off tune the frequency to hear the content but that would depend on the frequency range of the receiving radio. 73
