I used to commute in an MX-5 all year round for 5 years. Now doing the same with a 2006 Lotus Elise. The heaters on soft tops are much more powerful than on a normal car, they will keep you warm even with the roof down. Never felt cold in either cars.

“I know this is just a BMW Z4” Stop doing that. Wether it’s a Kia or Bugatti, it’s special to someone and that’s all that matters. I own a Z4 that looks almost identical to yours in color and it’s the 3.0i manual, and people with much “better” cars say they absolutely love my little Z lol. They want to get one themselves!

I did two winters with a Miata because my winter car died, and I had some problems locating another winter car I wanted. I ran studded snow tires so traction was great, that was my lesson that tires make a huge difference. With a soft top you should not lower the top if it is below 40 Ferighenheight because it is not flexible enough to fold properly, never lower it wet because it will shrink and be extremely hard to lock when you put it back up. Clean the snow off the top before you drive because it will fly off and could kill someone. If it snows and you drive the car park it in the sun so water can drain through the top drains and not freeze in them, Miata tops drain to the parcel shelf then to catch basons inside the passenger compartment so frozen drains can be a real problem. Wash the car after every single snow storm and at least once a week, the stuff they treat roads with to melt the snow will eat your car if you don't. As for the cold and wind noise, if you have a problem with that you should have bought a car with a fixed top.

My Z is all tucked up for the winter. I did live with a triumph spitfire all year round in my youth ,only time it didn't overheat ;) My TT is much better for the colder weather.

Look mate. It's a Bavarian car and ironically the place where it is really annoying to drive in winter is Bavaria. First point (mine is a 2010) is getting into the car when it has been standing outside in winter temperatures i.e. freezing and downwards. The windows should slide down and allow the doors to open, they don't, they freeze solid by minus 1 downwards, you can grease them but good luck cleaning the residue. Even then, the doors freeze closed, hot water will do it but... I went away for a weekend, came back and there was 1.6 M of snow on the car. Clear it off, there is seat heating so when you gain access you can start heating the car. What the snow does though is through the weight it breaches the frozen rubber seals on the boot and rear lights. It may even short the air bag controller! Two wheel drive means it won't drive in snow in any case. So, much as I love your videos, a Z4 is for any weather in the UK probably fine, for real winter, forget it, it is actually worse than an MX5. 4 wheel drive Porsche open at minus 14C is fine. Winter tyres are mandatory here also from November - useless. I really really wish it was not the case, in summer it is one of the best. Carry on!

I've used my Opel Astra Cabriolet as daily driver here in Germany for over a year. Driving about 100+km a day. But, I do have a garage to park it in and I do treat the top with Fabsil Gold about twice a year.

I'll preface this with the confession that winters in my part of the world are more than a bit milder than they are in your part of the world. I'm on my third convertible. and I've had them all in pretty cold weather and they have done just fine. The first one was the worst in terms of water tightness but the second was absolutely dry even in the hardest downpours. The third, which I bought last November has been great so far. I wound up driving it tonight through the worst weather I've been in since I bought it and it passed with flying colors. I love convertibles in less than ideal weather. It's kind of like roughing it, without really roughing it!

You should wear something more than a Tshirt unless you are from Newcastle where they are used to it. Good video though. They actually warm up just as quick as ordinary cars and you have more options with the soft top.

I love my Z4 3.0 (93 plate) Had it for about a year. The most fun car I’ve ever owned. Drives like a dream. I’m 6ft 5inch tall.. plenty of leg room. It was watching Joel’s videos that made me take the plunge.

I had a very similar 2003 E85 3.0i SE many years ago, and more convertibles since (2003 Boxster, 2009 E93 M3), no issues using them as year round daily drivers, but you do need heated seats (and cupholders) ;)

Hi Joel. Just binge watching your Z4 vids as I've just bought one. I know you haven't got it anymore but I just wanted to say I'm 6'3 and have no issues at all, loads of head room with the seat at its lowest.

I drive an E85 Z4 2.0L in Scotland and other than it occasionally being buried in snow I've had no issues in the winter. Heated seats do help but I find having the thermostat around 20C and having the climate control on auto to balance window de-misting and feet warming everything is fine (roof up of course). I'm also around 6'2 and with a little bit of seat adjustment I have loads of headroom, this is why I actually went for the 2.0L Z4 over an MX-5. The one issue I have is there's not much clearance between the steering wheel and my knees but it's still manageable.

I'm up in the Highlands :-) In the winter I use a windproof Sealskinz hat and autumn cycling gloves with rubber grips, works a treat.

very same conditions as me. In fact there is one more point it is so easy to clean that baby Z people couldn't believe it takes like 5 min to vacuum and another 10 to wipe dash and seats ...

I have a 2006 2.5 SI, and I previously had a 2004 2.5 SE. All I can say is that the 'SI' is a much better car! Everything is better. They made a lot of improvements for the 2006 release. The older models also had no sound proofing in the doors, so it sounds like a tin can when you shut the door - very annoying. If you get a Z4, get an 'SI' ! The older models also had their roof motor exposed to water. Mine was totally rusted and had to be replaced. Many people moved their roof motor hydraulic pumps to the trunk of the car to keep them dry. I haven't had any issues with the SI. I l love it , especially in nice weather. That's my advice!

Bought a z4 this winter in Finland! Hasn't been a problem for me even tho it has been -20c degrees. The manual says you shouldn't open the roof at below -5c (ice damages) but who would do that even on +5c? My car even has a rear window defrost button below the rear window heater button, didn't see that on your dashboard. My z4 was imported from germany

@brodude having owned three mx5s now and all being my yearly daily drivers. The way to do it: use a very soft bristle snow brush. Turning the heater full to get the top warm helps. Lightly remove any loose snow/ice, don't force it or scrub hard. It doesn't need to be spotless and you never want to use an ice scraper.

Change those wiper blades for BMW ones, £40 online and they will sweep silently. Those you have sound like the Bosch ones I fitted, they have been binned now and genuine BMW ones are silent

Hey Denis, thanks for watching! I don’t worry, at the end of the day, there’s nothing you can do if someone wants to slash it. Never had any issues tho. My roof is fine in all weather, even have it up and down in freezing temperatures!

No problem Denis. Definitely Check that the roof motor is working, and I wash the roof like any normal car, just make sure if you’re using a pressure washer, that you take care not to do it too strongly or close to the softop

kuuku Yankson I daily drive mine I live in chicago area and mine does perfectly fine in the winter the only problem I run into is my battery dying or the car struggling to turn depending on temperatures but the soft top is not a issue

Joel my friend, have you had to have the roof motor replaced on your Z4? People tell me that the rain drains into the compartment where the motor is housed and that mine will fail and die soon. I own a 2004 3.0 manual and the motor appears to be going strong. Just wondering if you had encountered any problems? Cheers for your time, if you read this mate :)

If you remove the rear wheels you can take part of the inner arch off with 3 bolts/screws and you can clear the drainage hole to prevent your roof motor being drowned.

I’d bin those wipers, buy genuine BMW ones, I’ve had Bosche ones thinking they were the same and they were noisey, swapped for BMW ones and they are quiet. Mind you maybe your wipers were just worn out

Hi Joel! You really convinced me to choose the E85 before MX-5 NC and SLK R171 :) I took it for granted that due to the fabric of the roof it should not be used during winter because if it gets wet and then the water freezes it would tear the roof and also that the ice would eliminate the roof being tight with the glass in the door, hence there would be wind coming inside... Could you please tell me if my fears are on point or totally off? :) Thanks in advance for your time!

Hi, Nice video. One question: Does the interior get faster and more dirty than a normal car? I mean, yeah, obviously it does, but isn't it a pain in the ass to always have to do some extra interior cleaning in a convertible? Specially in the summer time... Or, again, there's actually not such a big difference compared to a normal car. Best regards,

Not really a big difference to a normal car like you say. If anything it’s easy to clean the Z4 as it’s such a small interior cabin.

Anybody has problems like, the engine stalling at highway speed issue? and no problems with the spontaneous window rolling up, check engine lights coming on and quality issue, you know, roof leaking and stuff?

corywhatshisface the roof is actually designed to handle the weight of the car itself in case of a rollover. So i don’t think snow weight is going to bother it.

Halogens. Just bought one with xenons and the low beams are rubbish. Bulbs have a 3000 hour life and mine are done. So if you have dim xenons it's the bulbs.

hey Joel, I presume you keep the Z4 in a garage, right? (Despite all the fancy shots with the car covered in snow. ;) I've been thinking about getting the Z, but I don't have a garage. Plus, I live on the continent where winters are harsher than in the UK. Guess getting a soft top is a silly idea unless I rent a garage?

Nope. I park my Z outside every day! I wouldn’t worry at all, most people probably don’t garage their Z4s :)
