I do middle to high end remodels and additions. Its a combo of subs, one employee, and myself managing and running the business. When you say 10k in labor, thats not a true look at profit. You have overhead and taxes. On 1.2 Mil in gross revenue i pay myself a 6 fig salary and net about 5-10% profit after all the expenses. On any given project i expect to gross 30+% before any overhead expenses. I HIGHLY recommend Profit First for Contractors book. It changed my business and my life profoundly.

I'm in a similar position, but with more employees and we sub a lot of work out (which Noah might also do). Profit First for Contractors, absolutely yes. Profit vs your salary probably should be considered completely different, regardless whether you're self-employed or own a business. You pay yourself $100k or whatever as a salary (Handyman is an S corp he says) and then the rest is actual profit.

3rd generation contractor from NYC here. I learned how to estimate and price our work when I was 15 years old from my father. He said our “markup”/profit should always be 30%. We do large scale commercial work at around 7-10m in contracts a year with our small family run shop. We “could” charge more given our reputation but greedy pigs get slaughtered.

We are very fortunate. I worked as the lead foreman for a general contractor for 13 years got paid well. About a year ago he started slowing way down. He raised his prices high during covid and didn’t want to come down. I took a complete remodel on a old house that was built in the 40s. He ran out of work shortly after. So that job was an air b and b investment, then word of mouth. I haven’t ran out of work, and been able to triple my income. I’ve broke into this little elite club of investors by luck, and they are all super cool people i deal with them directly, so no management. So so fortunate.

Something to remember, since he’s self employed he’s responsible for all his own taxes and retirement benefits. Big chunk of that 300k. Also, moving to a “lower cost of living” area may also decrease the number of desirable jobs available, cost of labor for those jobs, and most importantly, having to build a brand new client base

I'm finishing a remodel now on a 1954 house. I wish I could redo it better but sanding the cabinets, paint, new granite countertops, new hinges and handles and three new cabinets in place of old ones. I'm trying to make it look uniform. New drains and water lines and new sink. Cost for materials is $1400. Kitchen is 10x11. I bought a granite slab that was usable for the kitchen that was considered scrap. They'll cut it and install. Taking three weeks to finish this kitchen and then resand the flooring. It's hardwood. Renting a machine is $90 and then stain. I don't think I'd get to where $300,000 on making money lol

I see where you're coming from. As a retired contractor, I crack up watching these turn key bathrooms re-doer companies on TV saying that'll come in and give you a completely new walk-in shower with all the bells and whistles in just 1 day. Some of these companies are coast to coast, big time, going as high as $25,000+ Not bad for one day's work, with an average profit of 85%. I didn't believe it till I checked by getting 2 estimates. One said I would receive a $100 gas card if I signed up now. But I use diesel fuel. What a joke........

I did very high end remodeling for 15 years in VHCOLA. I had employees, subs, trucks, etc. Staying small is the way to go. I traded health for wealth. Now I am going back to being a handyman after being semi retired for the last 8 years.

I'm an electrical contractor. I am really focusing on building the service side of my business right now because peoples stuff is always going to break. I also work with a couple companies that do storm, Fire and Water damage restoration. They bill insurance companies directly! It is huge for me that I get paid on time every time by them because the insurance companies just pay them. Even if the economy crashes houses and companies are going to keep catching fire and trees will keep falling on buildings and floods will keep happening.

I am a landscape contractor in nor cal. We basically only work for upper middle class to upper class people anymore. They are the only ones that can afford these luxury services. We are starting to go back to where we were at in the pre 60s era. the average family wasn't getting a remodel or buying a new car. We are entering a new era where you will have to decide what you want to spend your money on and most will not be able to have it all.

Yeah the get in get out jobs are the best and easiest to keep motivated. Bigger ones, more money but slower and more moving parts. You seem to have built a good balance with your scheduling and clients. Shoot what if you looked into running a business sometime in future and becoming more of project manager and overseeing all the work. Or just flipping homes, but just subbing everything out. Could be more stress mentally, but less physically
@alfredonski
@alfredonski 2 месяца назад
As crazy as it sounds a lot of the stress gets taken away by not living on more than you make. I love that my mortgage is $600 for the fixer upper I bought and am slowly fixing, all my cars are paid for, extremely reliable cheap to fix early 2000's Toyotas is the sweet spot of technology and reliability. I am 3rd year in, and have been doubling my income each year mainly doing medium to high end kitchens in a booming surf town where you cant drive 1min without seeing a new airbnb popping up. Proud graduate of the Handy man University.

300k min to live comfortably is simply staggering. But it really puts into perspective why and how you can charge what you do as well as give me perspective on just how well im doing by comparison. I live in an area when the media income is something like 50k/yr. It would probably be even lower if it wasnt for the few sprinklings of ultra wealthy enclaves that are also in the area. That said i base my jobs around $75/hr. Im pretty happy with this as i get a decent amount of work, small and large projects. On average i work probably 15hrs a week. I would very much like to work more, but i just don't get enough calls but i also don't want to charge less. My dream would be to make 100k, or more, a year working 20hrs a week as a handyman.

Did you settle on the family hauler? Check out that Honda Pilot handyman. It’s got the same space as the Grand HL but better off-roading and snow capabilities. It’s a V6, no turbo, super reliable engine that’s been used by Honda for almost 20 years. If it was an old school V6 from Toyota, that would be the winner but the turbo 4s I’m skeptical. Watch some direct comparison videos like the Fast Lane Truck. Pilot wins every time they test off road capabilities. Interior is super kid/wife friendly.

The Grand Highlander is supposed to be a bit larger then the Pilot. I like the way the Pilot looks compared to the Grand Highlander. Its hard to even find a Grand Highlander right now.
@BuddyTobyTV
@BuddyTobyTV 2 месяца назад
@@TheHandymanBusinessHL is a good vehicle. I still have an old HL and it is the most reliable vehicle ever. The Grand HL will probably work great. I am still of the mindset of there’s no replacement for displacement so that’s why I think Honda is on top right now. Exterior dimensions are about within an inch but you are right there is a smidge more cargo capacity in the HL. We were dead set on the HL but decided to test drive the Pilot and realized the seats were comfier and had better features. The new Pilot TrailSport looks slick IMO but that’s just me. I’d like to upgrade to the new generation in a couple years.

Expanding the kitchen to the dining area by knocking down the wall(s) I believe would require a permit and an engineer/architect to sign off and let you know if you require beams to be added. It will drive the price up but not necessarily your profit I'd imagine.

When you retire are you going to sell your book of customers? Have you thought about that? Is that even possible? It's getting harder and harder as a "handyman" to do complete remodels on my own in my state. Now home owners and business owners want permits pulled so when they flip or resell the property with "updated kitchens, and or converted bathtub bathrooms to walk in showers, proof that the work was done up to code and the their a$$ is covered after the sale. Being licensed as a plumber, electrician or GC is now crucial in my state so your 25k profit now becomes 8K on a master bathroom remodel if your lucky. So no, me alone will never make 300K, and no body wants to work anymore in my state even for a good hourly wage. Can you guess my state? Thanks you for making these videos, I can't tell you how much you have helped me.

Handyman listen to me carefully, joint pain is not caused by wearing out; it’s the food that you eat, in particular, it’s from the oxalates in certain foods. You are still young, but your body is starting to show signs of the accumulations of these plant compounds. Do some research. Look it up. I was amazed how good I felt when I addressed these oxalates. Also, we eat far too many carbs in the standard North American diet. See Dr. Anthony Chaffee, Dr. Shawn Baker and others. I love your videos. I wish you well. 🇨🇦💝🇺🇸🙏🤷‍♂️

I think the issue is more about companies raising their prices many times more than the rate of inflation.... it sits at 3.48% right now and, take Kelloggs for example, - they raised their prices over 12% in the latest fiscal year and I believe, it was another 10-12% the fiscal year before that. That's price gouging not out of control inflation... I'm sure that's the trend in many many companie, not just Kelloggs

That minimum is based off inflation. The cost of homes has doubled in the last 8 years. The cost of vehicles has doubled too. $300k has the purchasing power of only $150k these days. I don't know what your biofeedback statement means.
