Can you mix discus from different sources? This question has been up in the air for quite a while. Although I do not aim to provide a 'yes/no' answer in this video, I try to unpack this problem in order to help discus keepers to deal with this problem.

I have not kept discus before but I would like to someday. The 2 that I like the most are red melons and wild heckels
@tropicalfishhub

I'm sure they would look great in your planted tanks! I love red melons, heckels are gorgeous fish too although they can be very sensitive to water parameters

Would using UV sterilizer help to control the pathogen ? Thank you
@tropicalfishhub
@tropicalfishhub 11 месяцев назад
I doubt it as there seems to be a whole range of bacteria and parasites including intestinal parasites that can pass from one population of discus to another
@thopham7976
@thopham7976 11 месяцев назад
@@tropicalfishhub UV sterilizer will keep the water clean and safe. But once the fish gets intestinal parasites, it's done. Fixing sick fish is costly, time consuming, stressful and success is not guarantee. Prevention is better than cure.

@@tropicalfishhub From my prev. life, I used to have a 180 gallon tank and at least 10 of 5" discus. None of them get sick. I bought those discus from different sources and I didn't quarantine them. I was able to do this b/c of the use of UV sterilizer.

Hello , I have one question for you , i would like to put pothos plant at the top of my future discus tank like you , but can i put the pothos while i am cycling the tank ? Can pothos grow with there roots in the tank without fish ? Thank you for your answer.
@tropicalfishhub
@tropicalfishhub 2 года назад
Well pothos will absorb nutrients both from light through its leaves and water through its roots, if there re no nutrients in water it will still grow if there is enough light, but it will be growing slower. What you can do is throw some dry fish food in your tank while you re cycling it. It will provide nutrients/ammonia for your photos and will also speed up cycling process.

Interesting subject. What did you do with your blue & wild discus collection?
@tropicalfishhub
@tropicalfishhub 2 года назад
I kept a pair of blue diamonds for quite a while and they were prolific breeders, but raising the fry was rather unrewarding job so I rehomed them with a local breeder. I also had a breeding pair of german wonders at the same time, so providing two pairs with their own tanks was a bit of a challenge. I had a group of wilds for a few years and I loved them, but I lost some due to a whirling disease. The remaining two paired up, although I never managed to get fry from them. Eventually female jumped out and I had to rehome the male as they cant live alone. Ever since it took me almost two years to get another group of wilds; they are so hard to find and are often unreasonably priced or of poor quality.

@@tropicalfishhub I love blue diamonds. I’m still contemplating a few discus with my altums. Got the water parameters to finally settle down and things are doing well. I hesitate because I’ve never kept discus so I’m a little scared 😳 but I’ve never had altums either 😂
@tropicalfishhub
@tropicalfishhub 2 года назад
@@missmermaid6249 Altums shoal up nicely with discus, and since you've already raised wild caught altums, discus should be easy. They are much less sensitive, especially tank-bred strains like blue diamonds

Can i know what is the proper quarantine ?? I want to put asian into my asian discus fish thank. I learn alot from you thanks in advance .
@tropicalfishhub
@tropicalfishhub 2 года назад
I always put new discus into a bare bottom quarantine tank for about a week. I raise temperature to 30-31C and add one or two catappa leaves for disinfection. I also deworm them and observe if their poop is healthy (if its white/transparent and long, they have worms). I learned it hard way because when I didnt quarantine discus, I often introduced all sort of diseases
@Cybersix6666
@Cybersix6666 2 года назад
what do you think about inbreeding discus ?
@tropicalfishhub
@tropicalfishhub 2 года назад
That's a very big problem indeed especially for smaller breeders! I often see lots of locally bred and inbred inferior quality discus and sadly most of those gets sold to beginners because they are cheap
@Cybersix6666
@Cybersix6666 2 года назад
@@tropicalfishhub thanks for reply. If you buy juveniles from an importer to get a pair or two , they are most likely come from the same parents so how would you go about this when there aren’t many importers around?
@tropicalfishhub
@tropicalfishhub 2 года назад
@@Cybersix6666 It shouldnt be an issue with Asian discus because there re often several importers, but its a big problem with Stendker discus, and I can only think of buying several fish of the same strain once a year or so hoping that they re from different pairs
@thopham7976
@thopham7976 Год назад
To understand the Stendker discus, one has to know the German history and especially its culture. For example, the Germans are very proud of their classical composers such as J.S. Bach. For them, to place other composers in the same place as Bach is a blasphemy. Likewise, putting non-Stendker discus in the same tank with Stendker discus deserves heaviest punishment.

Can you mix Italian antonelo greco with Asian ;
@tropicalfishhub
@tropicalfishhub 2 года назад
I guess they are of Asian origin (not bred from wild or German strains), so following quarantine there should be no problem adding them to Asian discus.
