Today I will tackle the modification of a new Seiko 5 Sports model with SKX007 parts. Does it work? Check it out! Our mod parts: www.longislandwatch.com/Watch... Follow us on Instagram: / longislandwatch Thank you for watching.
Thousands of watch nerds: *staring with anxiety* Marc: Nervous friendly laughter as he pulls parts and hacks a watch together better than i could even dream.
The stuff he did in this video is pretty simple actually. I was really nervous taking a movement and Crystal out the first time, but it was surprisingly easy and fun!
Marc, you are a poet, a musician. You play (assemble) a wonderful symphony with all your instruments (components) with taste and intelligence ant the result is gorgeous. This MOD watch is simply gorgeous. Congratulations!
I just bought a Seiko SRPD83K1 online as a birthdaygift fot myself, in Champagne color just of the shear look of it. I didn't knew it could be modified but that's going to open up a new door for me! I really appreciate your video! Thanks and I will follow your channel. Thanks for putting some new idea's in my head! 😉
Very pleasing. Good to know the modding options. In a way, it's ironic, though. The new Seiko 5 is really a rollout of a "factory mod" concept... a varied range of color- and texture-coordinated factory-original styles. They're furnishing a platform for their own in-house "mod" look. So, when I watched you work through this I thought "Dayum, Marc is opening up just the thing that Seiko is trying to own." ... and you made it look really REALLY good!
I was really hoping to see a case swap, it would be cool to mod these to get the 200m water resistance. I have to say the video was really fun to watch and the enthusiasm is contagious!
I have swapped my 5kx into a 200m skx style case that I bought online. 4r36 stems and crowns are compatible with nh35/36 stems as well. Pretty much the only way to get 200m out of these
Great tip on getting those end lugs to fit with the narrower spring bars. The crimp I had never thought of. There are some spring bar "curving" tools that might help maintain the integrity of the bar's case, but the crimp gets it done quick and easy. And "Frankel-ly" that black bezel insert is da bomb and makes a very interesting contrast compared to the blue or the metallic. Stuff like this makes me wonder how much design decisions are based on existing manufacturing capabilities and suppliers. In my time modding the "same" Chinese watch case from different suppliers, I have found differences in threading, movement ring, case inside diameter, dial diameter, and spring bar holes locations that can drive you nuts with a one-off situation every time you try something different. I can see why people mod Seiko for the initial quality and consistency of fit. Thank you. Great lesson.
Every time I purchase a watch I tell myself, you don’t need another watch and then time passes a bit, another watch catches my attention and the cycle begins and I go get it, I love timepieces, nothing I can do but surrender to my love for watches...
Thanks for posting mate, this will be helpful👌 I am still waiting for my SRPD79K1 being shipped from the factory overseas. A few upgrades I want to make such as the crystal and bezel insert.
You knew this was going to work as they basically just updated the dial and the movement! :) Thanks for the video to verify though! Helps all modders out there!
I modded all three of my SKX’s (Saphire crystal, lumed bezel insertert, and bracelets on all)...I’ve decided not to bother with purchase the new ‘dive style’ 5KX watches as there is no mod for adding a screw down crown(5KX doesn’t have it)or to turn them in to an actual dive watch that they pretend to be. Instead I’m just going to purchase another long island watch from you Mark...You’ve already done all the work! And you gave us the watch that everyone wanted Seiko to give us. They dropped the ball...And you picked it up and ran with it! Sapphire Crystal, a nice bracelet with a proper class, Hacking in hand winding with the NH35/36 movement, lumed or ceramic inserts etc... Too many choices though, Having a tough time picking! 😉
Nice demo 👍. Like your improvised curved spring bars. There is at least one entity out there that makes curved spring bars. I believe there is a seller in NJ, also and are available in different sizes. About 3 years back, I had to buy a set for 26mm lugs and they worked great.
Just ordered the SRPD61, I would've bought it from you but you don't have it. However I plan to buy a Sapphire crystal and maybe some other parts from you, so this video answered all the questions I had on whether or not the parts from a 007 will fit. Thanks for this video. :)
Awesome video Marc. I just picked up this watch and was wondering what mods I could do. I never thought of a black bezel but that looks amazing with the deep blue dial. Also love that strap, do you carry those or is it strap code
Great video, thanks. When you look at it, it would have cost Seiko about 50 cents to thread a crown tube and the die hards would have been sooooooo much happier. Missed opportunity there.
The problem isn't the nib. The problem is (I think) that the chapter rings are slightly undersized and require careful alignment before pressing the crystal down, and careful operation of the press to keep them from moving while the crystal is being seated.
I wish you done this before I got my SK 5 green dial form you, a couple of days ago I just got it but I wanted to mod mine, with the parts you sell, anyway the qustion is answered, thanks
Hi Marc, great video, thank you. Have you performed any pressure testing to confirm that the crystal stays in place at 10 bar? Also what about widening the lug holes, by drilling them larger? Again thank you for the video and the attention!
Marc, If you order a bracelet for the new 5's from Strapcode, they do include curved spring bars to fit, along with a pair of fat bars, should you want to swap the bracelet over to an SKX. I ordered a Super J for my SRPD71 just after Christmas. I wish we could post pictures in these comments, because it looks phenomenal! Amazing how something as simple as a strap or bracelet change can change the entire look of a watch. I also put a Super J on my SSA343 Presage. 🙂
I was watching a different watchmaker mod a 5KX and they said that the gaskets That are used in the SKX or thicker and not transferable to the 5KX or vice versa. So I guess it’s important to not mess up the five 5KX gaskets Or at least make sure to order the correct replacement
On the spring bars @marc - do you not need to account for lost length when you bend the bars? Typically if we put slightly shorter end links its easier for a "slap on the wrist" to disengage the bracelet
Hey, I actually heard from a mod channel that the 007 crystal gasket are actually different from the new Seiko 5 crystal gasket, you can get your crystal pop out if you use the 007 crystal gasket
I purchased a srpb53 Pepsi seiko 5 two days back and it’s beautiful. This video helped me decide that when I wanna change it up I’ll get skx coin edge bezel and skx Pepsi insert with lume pip. Can a bezel be done without a press?
Marc, did you miss one thing? I don't think you tried the aftermarket bezel insert on the original 5kx bezel. Only tried in the sub bezel, right? Also looks like the end link profile is a bit off at the lug tip. Couldn't exactly tell viewing on my phone.
I don't need another watch either Mark. But that doesn't stop me from having two more mods in the works. Do these Seiko case backs fit on aftermarket cases? One of the pieces I'm working on is a captain Willard style case. I would like to put a glass case back on it and I think the SRP case backs should work. Just not sure.....🤔
Fantastic Marc! You know, if you don't need another watch, you could always sell it, or do a giveaway to a lucky customer. Do you think Strapcode and Uncle Seiko will do bracelets for the 5KX cases soon?
Strapcode already does Chris. I ordered a Super J from them for my SRPD71 the day after Christmas. It was to me before New Year's. Go on their website, they have a section set aside just for the new 5's.
Strapcode released a line of bracelets for the 5KX as soon as they launched. From what I've seen in another video, even the shape of the lugs is slightly different from the SKX.
Is it possible to change the chapter right by removing the crystal? Planning to mod a 5kx bezel insert and add a double dome crystal... wondering if I can swap the chapter ring while I've got the crystal off?
