*FYI* Because there are only 3 Tesla (plus 1 Leaf) in the entire 530-unit community, our HOA is not willing to install a public charger (demand is not high enough to turn a profit). Also, some units (like ours) only have 1 deeded parking vs. 2, so either my husband or I would have to fight others for the second parking spot at non-deeded spaces. Since parking spaces are scarce, it does not make sense for HOA to designate an EV spot taking away more parking. That will cause an uproar among residents and risking our cars getting keyed from unhappy people.

Joy, this is great information. I am the president of my HOA and we installed 6 level 2 chargers in 2013 when we had maybe 4 EV's in our 480 unit complex in LA. Now we have over 50 Tesla EV's here and one Volt, so it was a good thing we did. Your HOA really should consider installing chargers there even though they are not obligated, as ICE vehicles get phased out, they will feel the pressure. I am happy to show you where and how we did it at my HOA. We are in Century City across from the old Century City Hospital location. I also happen to have a Model 3, which I only purchased last year, but we have almost paid ourselves back on our initial cost ~$45,000 for the 6 chargers and installation. We use SemaConnect level 2 chargers and they work great. Our parking is pretty scarce too, but we figured out a way, I am sure you could too. Let me know if you want to check it out or if I can help in anyway. Everyone in your HOA will thank you!

Karen Bleifer Hi Karen, thank you so much for sharing this. I wish I lived in your community! 😊 Unfortunately our HOA board are older residents (retired) and they are clueless about EVs. They don’t want to spend the extra $ installing public chargers when they said “You can install it at your spot.” Hopefully as time goes on and more people get EVs in our community (and with younger board members elected), the tides will change.

@@TeslaJoy I feel your pain, your association will have to get with the times sooner than later because it is the future of transportation. I can honestly say that it has increased our property values and makes our HOA much more desirable than others in the area as we were the first in LA to install and make EV charging available. When choosing where to buy or rent, people tend to gravitate toward the more forward thinking associations. Not to mention of course, that Tesla people are a cool and unique group of people that would enhance any community.

While I have home charging, I definitely don’t see that ability as a requirement to have own a Tesla. I had my car for a month before I got home charging installed. Before then I had easy access to a Supercharger and Destination charging areas I could charge as well. With Electrify America push, there is a entire new set of options for charging outside home charging.

> With Electrify America push, there is a entire new set of options for charging outside home charging. James, can you clarify? EA stations typically offer CCS and CHAdeMO fast DC charging . . . unfortunately Model 3 can't use either in North America, yet (Model S and X can use an optional CHAdeMO adapter for ~$600). The expense of an eventual CCS adapter plus the high cost of their charging could pay for a LOT of Supercharging.

I agree that it is not a reqirement to have a charger at home, but I woud argue it is essential to have a convenient charging option for your day to day driving. Having to go somewhere and wait while the car is changing is not convenient. Having an option do at least 90% of your charging while parked, I believe is important. Depending on situation, different options are preferable: at home or at work, fairly slow charging is usually enoug. Shorter time activities, fast AC or even rapid DC can be the prefered option.

The cost in the video makes my $10k quote to install in my building's garage look like a good deal. I am even the HOA board president and realistically would not approve spending HOA funds that benefit only a limited number of homeowners. I've been relying on public L2 chargers with minimal issues, but it is becoming more difficult to find availability as EV become more popular in LA. Eventually, I may bite the bullet and pay for my EVSE installation for convenience purposes, if I can find a slightly less expensive electrician.

One of the benefits of an EV is the convenience of a full charge every morning before a busy day, and possibly save money by charging off peak, mostly 12 am to 6 am. This may explain why people think charge at own garage is a must.

@@TeslaJoy Understood Joy, I was trying to answer your question, why so many people think one needs to be able to charge at own garage. Life is hectic enough, people want less inconveniences, not more, even if just a little more. Being able to charge overnight at home makes it more convenient than owning an ICE, without that option it is the opposite, less convenient than having an ICE. That is a big deal to many. BTW, I suspect the other Model 3 owner not installing a charger is due to security concern. A $500 charger in common area is an easy target, won't last long.

By your theory, Tesla won’t be able to move forward with their mission, and the Model 3 shouldn’t be adopted by the masses. The point isn’t the waiting time but for EV Charging infrastructure to become mature and robust, and battery technology to advance. Not everyone in the world lives in homes with garages. To assume that you MUST live in that environment before you should buy an EV is highly myopic.

@@TeslaJoy you don't have to live somewhere with a garage. But it's very rare to live somewhere including a place like yours where you can't even install an outlet in your parking spot. I also own a Tesla Model 3 and live in southern California. I have owned my Tesla since February and I have to say, charging has become a unique part of my life. I do have a Tesla charger installed in my home garage but I am a government contractor living out of hotels most of the time. I use the Tesla super chargers as a means of a last resort. They cost much more than other chargers even thought the charging times are much faster, (and the nearest ones are 16 miles away). I have adapted my daily schedule to work around the charging options. For instance, one location had Charge Point on site but I could only charge a maximum of 4 hours (driving 120 miles per day) and while appreciated it was also inconvenient, they had a wait list. If you got on the wait list after 7:30 AM you might not get your turn. Looking for better solutions I found that if you were close enough to a Metro Station with EV connect, you could charge as long as you needed on a first come first serve basis. Remaining range and charging options are certainly a source of stress, but once you figure out your options it becomes a matter of routine. There is a charger near my gym (charge point) and I've found that a good workout can last two hours and provide 88 miles of range. So as they say, where there is a will, there is a way.
@TeslaJoy
@TeslaJoy 5 лет назад
Nice! I agree with you that owning a Tesla or EV definitely causes lifestyle and routine change when it comes to charging. The ChargePoint I use by work also has a waitlist. I often have to get on it before I leave the house or else I won’t be able to get in line in time before I leave the office.

One guy I met said the only reason he didn't buy a Tesla was, his landlord would not pay for a charging install in assigned parking. I asked if he was willing to go to his landlord and pay for the whole cost of power and install? He said hell no, I am not paying for an upgrade to their building. He was a typical cheapskate spoiled rich brat who wanted everybody else to pay. (living off Daddy's money?). An amazing video again Joy. You are lucky to live in California but if you were living in Quebec Canada with are very cold winter you would need a home charger to heat up you car in the morning when the temperature drop to -20C (-5F) and have enough energy to commute your day. That is why also in Quebec people living in condo do not by EV. But a new law was issued in last March that all new condo built must prevent to have opportunities for installation of Charger or the permit for the construction will not be issued because as you probably know Quebec is a ZEV province

Not sure where you live in Quebec but in Montreal, winter days and evenings can go under -30C (-22F) so not sure how an EV will start up in the morning under these conditions if parked outside and not plugged in. Certain winter days, I've required a battery boost from CAA/AAA to get my gasoline car started I've been considering a Tesla 3 especially since the federal government implemented the $5k discount. Added to the Quebec $8k discount gives a total of $13k discount on a $55k model Tesla 3 standard range plus. However, not being able to charge it at home (I live in an apartment style condo) and the Quebec winters has given me some hesitation. I'm not worried about the reduced range compared to my gas car since going to/from work each day is only 50km (31 miles) total so in a week would be only 250km. A standard range plus model Tesla 3 is around 380km range so I would be able to charge it on the weekend fully or to 90% to repeat the process the following week. There is also a 150km (93 miles) Tesla 3 but I don't really see anyone purchasing this and is just Tesla's way of qualifying for the federal government's $5k rebate discount.

Jim AP I live in Montréal and I have my Tesla M3 Long range since June 2018 so I past the worst last winter we have with my Tesla sleeping outside all the time. And I can tell you that at -30C it start immediately but no regen - battery to cold but the car get warm in about 5 min with seat heater on and heater of the car on also but you reduced the range of the car. So it is better to have the Tesla plugin to warmup before living home. So no problem with winter

I don't live in L.A. but I travel there a lot. I have a plug-in hybrid so I'm always on the lookout for juice (even though gas-only I still get 500 miles range on a full tank). I use EvGO and ChargePoint mostly. I use Volta when they are available since they are scarce/sparse with parking spots/slots. The app will tell you they're open and when you get there the spot is taken. Also, Blink is another one I use, they don't charge super fast but they're usually always available. There are some parking garages that have free charging if you can find them on the PlugShare app. I have found a couple of them on there. It sucks to hear you can't charge at home. My plug-in maxes out at 22 miles EV-only and I charge on a 110v at home, only takes a few hours to charge. It covers my 11 mile round trip commute to work. Obviously with a Tesla I'd need more juice capability but I'll cross that bridge once I make my purchase 😁 also, ChargeHub and EVGateway are some other charging station finding apps

About conversion from gas station to charging stations. In Norway, there is kind of a transition, along highway routs, they are getting more likely to be called "service stations", because they offer multiple services: refueling for ICE, diner/fastfood, restrooms, convenience store, and increasingly also rapid charging. I believe rapid charging is most important along the main routes. Tose who can have a home charger should, and as there come more EVs, I believe public slow shargers should have a fair payment, to make it available to those who needs it. I believe free charging is a nice idea, but it easily gets crowded by people who don't need to charge, but they just wants to charge for free.

I live in Chicago. It’s harder here to have Tesla without a charger in a convenient location installed where you park like work or home (if you live in a place with a garage with a charger) because in the winter the battery isn’t as efficient and you get way less range. Especially those days when it’s minus 0 it’s a nightmare man. Besides that it’s a really great experience owning a Tesla.

Hi Joy, Sorry for your dilemma. I have a 2015 MS 85D (110,000 mi) with free supercharging for life. Yet I charge at home / work 90+% of the time on a 210v plug in. It is just convenient and overnight at home it is fully charged, not worth my time at the supercharger. Florida has cheap electricity, but California is far ahead with EV charging. You also have what I saw as a perfect spot for a solar setup. Not an expert in that area and I don’t know your daily energy requirement but might be an option. There are also rebates available with the electric company or state that reduce the cost in many States. Even better get the other TESLA owners to give up their their undercover primo parking spots and share the cost of solar charging next to you LOL. I read that TESLA had installed some Superchargers that were solar, but have never seen one ?
@TeslaJoy
@TeslaJoy 5 лет назад
Hey thanks for the comment. We did look into solar but it’s going to cost $12K upwards which will totally defeat the purpose of having a charger at parking to save on electricity. Also all our spots are deeded so I can get anyone to “give up” their spots legally.

You’re right...it’s not cost effective to get a charger installed where you live...that’s just too crazy for that amount. In my area...or rather not in my area there are 2 supercharger stations but they’re miles away from where I live...such a bummer. I could have the cord run from one room on my main level to my garage but that would be a pain in the you now what AND it would take forever to charge. I’ll just wait until I move and then have an electrician wire my garage.
@TexasLocalProduce
@TexasLocalProduce 5 лет назад
Here's an idea. Forget the garage. Bypass the reveried parking spaces. Walk around outside the property to where there is a patch of grass. Create a space (that no one is fighting for), place Charging stations there. Get the other EV owners to run with you and replace the board. Not forever, just long enough to vote for the Charging station installations. Hopefully you will find a place where non-residents will see and come pay to charge there as well. As the older Tennant's get older and hopefully move into nursing homes, younger ones that are attracted by the existing Charging Stations will move in.
@TeslaJoy
@TeslaJoy 5 лет назад
Unfortunately that won’t work. All spaces outside property are designated curbside parking by city on a very busy blvd because there are commercial buildings across the street along the blvd (like eBay, Magento, etc.). In LA real estate is precious and every inch is claimed. We don’t have space.

Joy, yours is a very common problem in Nor Cal Bay Area as well. In fact, from what I have seen personally, and even on Reddit, a significant percentage of Model 3 buyers either rent, or own a home where installing a L2 charging station isn't worth it. That being said, fast charging long term won't degrade your battery pack as much as people think. However, if I were in your situation, I would try slower L2 charging whenever it was practicable, to maintain battery health.
@TeslaJoy
@TeslaJoy 5 лет назад
Thanks for your comment Frank. What’s great about Tesla is their BMS is unmatched in EV industry right now. They are doing everything they can to preserve health of battery during supercharging like pre-heating battery en route to Supercharger and not dumping all high current at once but do a ramp up/peak/ramp down trickle charge to ensure battery isn’t damaged.

I live in a city of over 1.5 million, and yet we only have a handful of chargers in the entire metro area. Fortunately, homes are relatively cheap so I can charge my Honda Clarity at home. I cringe thinking of the paint damage that cable is doing draped over the roof of your Tesla.

In France, we have a law to help people get their own private charger aka everyone has the right to install a charger. Theoretically, you send a letter to the board, and they can't say no. And after 6 months, and in the very near future 3 months later, if there is no technical problems, you can install your charger. I explained that very fact for months, and they dismissed it. Little people in a corner, nay Sayers, postponing, postponing. But I do think that next April 2020, the collective (100 and more) will say yes for this Zeplug company to patch the building. I discovered too that to take care of the future, more and more electric chargers, you need to plug the building with a dedicated electric line. Good new amounts of energy to feed the EVs. So happy to share my story here. 😀

very interesting for me to learn the situation in US cities, and really enjoyable to watch your videos. Here in Germany, town houses are very popular for small families in the suburbs, and the houses in the middle have their garages often seperated in a garage court in common property of all owners. Often those garages have no electricity installed. When you want to electrify your garage, you have to obtain the approval of all owners even if you are willing to pay for your installation and have your own electric meter - and often one or the other owner will not approve for fear of some follow-up costs.

Great question! These ChargePoint stations actually have a "Wait List" feature. If the spots are taken, you add yourself to the queue either from the app or online account (you can view your position in queue online). When it's your turn, the app will notify you and/or send you a text. You have 5 minutes to respond/accept/snooze/leave wait list, and another 15 minutes grace period to actually drive over and plug in. The chargers have a 2-hour timer and will stop charging automatically when your time is up. The app again will notify you/send you a text when your 2-hour is up. You have a 10-minute grace period to unplug and move your car thereafter. Some cars have overstayed and the city will start imposing overstaying/penalty fees starting next month, much like Tesla Supercharger idling fees.

We were up in Portland this past weekend for a wedding, and I counted a total of 4 Tesla's the entire weekend. Was a bit surprised since Portland is pretty liberal. I'm sure you've seen how many Tesla's are up here in Norcal, seriously like a dime a dozen. I'm glad I see many of them everyday. And yay for free charging! I use Volta too up here since we have a mall that's right across the street from work for free energy (I do also have a NEMA 14-50 at home that I try to not use :P)! I think they just have deals with retail locations since I would think the logic is plug in your car for free for a while, and spend money at our retail shops or restaurants in the area. That's where all the Volta chargers in our area are situated. Great video and I totally believe if you live in the right area, home no charging isn't really a big deal at all.

nukem384 I’ve been talking to people around the complex (as recent as last night). The biggest misconception about owning a Tesla is people thought you *cannot* survive if you didn’t install a charger at home. Hopefully as more people see us driving our Tesla around the community, the myth will be busted and more people will jump on it. But this also means Tesla needs to build more Superchargers quickly. The closest Superchargers to me is often a 15-20 minute wait time in the line before a stall is open for you to charge. It gets very frustrating and people still prefer going to gas station for that reason.

My friend has had a Model S since about 2014, and he said even now, it's SO much easier to charge than it was back then.
