Can you Quality Control this bike better than Giant? 

As a 3D CMM metrologist, I always love to watch these type of video's. The quality standards (and/or lack of quality control) the bike industry uses is absolutely laughable!

Send it back. The giant shop is less than a mile from you in Kendal 🎉 is it def a real frame and not a copy? Not seen many as bad as that.

People are saying you can't trust the Chinese brands to deliver good quality QC. Giant - hold my beer. If Hambini was given this frame Giant would be reamed so hard they would rename themselves Midget.

I would be devastated if a mechanic built that bike for me. I’d 100% want them to send it back.

What an insult to customers. These days, it's easier to keep a list of the small number of brands worth spending money on than the ones to avoid.

Id just let Mapdec build a bike for me. I imagine 000s of cyclists including me have unwittingly bought poorly prepared/assembled bikes and ridden them creaks and all

Man, as soon as I saw that flap of carbon on the brake mount, that was it for me. That was the first thing I felt like shouldn’t be ‘fixed’ by a shop.

I’m so glad you made this video. I found so many problems with my Giant TCR advance pro frame and been trying to find a solutions with one of their dealers and they just continue to ignore me. They are saying this is normal. I think my steer tube is cracked. They are saying don’t worry keep riding…. My rear calipers I can’t install a 160mm rotor because with adaptor it’s making the rotor rub…., but they keep telling me don’t worry. My bb is f up just like yours but they keep telling me it’s all good. My headset bearing area is undersized but they keep tell me it’s acceptable…. wtf.

2.26 flat mount. I even considering earlier. If the derailleur has to be "straighted" as the frame mount is not flat then every new mount will also have to be "fixed"

The issue isn’t where you tap out… it’s where one decides that they’re not getting quality-for-money. Tbh, the bike industry is a horror show. It’s blokes banging out stuff with ordinary design and substandard quality control. Anyone leaving things up to manufacturers these days deserves what they get. One needs to get onto this themselves, pay someone to finish fitting, or just return to the manufacturers with a rude note.

I will say that the white mark in the back of the seat tube is there to signify if there is a magnet placed in the frame to hold the d-fuse shim in place during assembly.

£1900 for a carbon frame that likely has a “should cost” in manufacturing of £400 and I am being generous. It should be 100% perfect. With deep respect to your considerable skill, the role of QCing it as an independent mechanic should not be needed. The frame should be perfect and not require any “minor tweaks”. The one you showed should be sent straight back. Paying that sort of money and then needing to pay a mechanic to “correct” it would be unacceptable in any serious professional industry. Chinese brands have a great opportunity if they can get their quality and price point right on a par with what they are doing to the car industry. The western cycle brands charge top dollar for bottom dollar quality.

I’ve got 4 giant bikes , all the older ones are great , no problems at all ,my TCR is 2005 model / propel 2014 model/ anthem pro 0 2019 model ,all been great bikes , my Revolt pro 0 is never been right with the frame being replace one day after purchase [ cracked at the seat tube clamp ] and it’s never been right , brake calliper rub issues / major problems with chain drop / gear changing , they finally took it back for a rebuild and it sort of ok-ish now but the paint just flakes of so so easy it now has more paint flaking / makes and looks older in 2 years of riding than any of my bikes , the revolt will be my last Giant Bike that purchase their quality is just SH*T now , thanks for the info it explains everything/problem that I’ve endured 😢

Paul you've saved me nearly 2 grand, was debating getting this frame but think I'll pass. Real shame as I've got a 2021 version and it's been faultless.

Quality control by Stevie Wonder. Send it straight back. Had a Bowman frame once with similar QC. Wished I’d sent the pile of junk back! Didn’t keep it long as knew it would be trouble.

i have a 2022 revolt advanced carbon frame. I had to have the first frame warrantied because of a crack seat tube where the wedge sits. Got the second fame and its good so far. That being said i do like the bike.

So, looks like the only thing that is perfect is the GIANT logo... Good job !

Bought a Giant Revolt Advanced Pro in 2020. After 1.5 years the seat tube broke. Clean Horizontale line break in the middle of the tube. Quite sure that it was a production fault. Took them 7 months to replace. Which made me even more angry.

Can't say I am surprised by this. I ordered a Revolt frame around 18 months ago, and the quality was very shoddy. As well as an obvious blemish in the paint on the down tube that you spotted immediately (don't know how QC missed it), the internals if the frame were very poor. Looking into the head tube there were sharp ridges and loos carbon fibres. Inside the BB was terrible. As well as sharp ridges, tenting, and loose fibres, there was a whole layer of carbon that had completely separated as there was no resin to bond it. There were also sharp ridges, tenting and loose fibres inside the chain stays. The brake mounts were also pretty shoddily finished. I sent it back for a refund and ordered the Vitus Venom Evo frame set, which was immaculate in comparison. Such a shame Wiggle went bust as it is a great bike and rides superbly (sold my Cervelo R3 as I stopped riding it in preference for the Vitus).

Paul, good job detailing a bad job. And for $1900 ? just wow!....Can you imagine what they get away with on complete bikes ?

Public shaming is probably the best course of action. If it were mine I'd have Mapdec do the build along with youtube shorts for every little fix. On the root causes, I'd say all the problems came from one work station and poor final QC processes. Additionally, I'd take the designers to task for designing a bike that is difficult to fabricate correctly.

Send it back. Too many questions on key parts of frame. Metal frame for off tarmac for durabilty.

Rolled the dice in the frame stakes and came up snake eyes

I’d of wanted to send back just before the flake, when you said you couldn’t get the facing tool on there. The front mount would have been a hard no as well had it come before the flake.

I would return this frameset to the manufacturer, and asked for refund. This is like first prototype of the carbon frame in the world!

So what did they QC? Anything? I’ll stick with my titanium bike, thanks. I’ll gladly take the kg hit just to never worry about probs like this.

I would love to hear how this turns out. I have a 2020 revolt that has issues. My BB is oversized and the old frames have aluminum dropouts bonded to the frame. I now have paint bubbles all around the joints from galvanic corrosion. I haven’t talked to a giant dealer about it because I don’t have a reliable shop anywhere near me. And because giants warranty clearly states it doesn’t cover corrosion and if anyone other then a giant dealer works on the bike it voids the warranty. I stripped all the 105 stuff off my bike and rebuilt it with AXS.

I got a giant revolt frameset this past winter…..started with flaking carbon off the headset bearing race….then my mechanical rep brakes would not fit inside the dropped seat stays (not really there fault)….but then at the veeeery end I went to install the front derailleur and when you fastened it down the tail would kick out about 7-8mm. The front mount was riveted to the frame crooked! Nightmare…the giant rep ended up buying it back from the shop I got it from….oy😂

I’m guessing you never had the alignment table back in the day. Euro frames would always be checked for alignment then head tubes and bbs would be faced. Then on to the der hanger and done. Anywhere from 20 mins to an hour per frame.

I would never put a finger down a Giant or Cannondale manufactured carbon frame - you WILL slice something.

Wow, this is the worst frame I've seen in a while. I'd call that rear brake mount unfixable, because with that much flaking you don't know how much carbon will flake off once you machine it and it might end up undersized. Insides look just as bad, tons of resin drips and wrinkles, it looks like a carbon frame from 20 years ago. I've seen better frames come from the bottom of the AliExpress bargain bin. Also, that bit at the derailleur hanger mount looks very thin, why they didn't just use UDH is beyond me.

I was warned against buying one of these by a friend who works in a bike shop. They had endless warranty issues with the framesets including cracking seat tubes, and Giant never had stock to replace them. They’ve ended up stripping numerous complete bikes to get customers back on the road. Bought a Specialized crux instead, and whilst not perfect, the frameset was finished very well.

I've been looking for a new frame. Can cross Giant off the list now.

You spend over $2000 US on a bike frame and feel compelled to have a third party QA if before you build it up? In that case, don't buy that frame. This example has far too many issues to be acceptable. It should be sent back to Giant for a full refund.

Something is very wrong, big hole under the bottle cage 😂 My 2022 Giant Reign mtb was perfect but the 2023 trance x29 I got to replace it needed a lot of finishing and paint scraping from the dealer. You can't trust a name, trust your eyes 😅

Mapdec content - always interesting yet makes me feel disappointed about bike industry. For years they've been selling things like aero gains, rigidity, snappiness, revolutionary carbon lay-ups, better this, faster that, however they are yet to figure out how to make a round hole and paintwork.

I would start packing it back into the box for returning to sender at 2:51. I know this is not a top spec frameset but this is disgustingly poor QC from Giant and should never have ended up with a customer in the first place.

Shocking, a customer should be able to use your video as evidence and get a refund from Giant for the work that you have to put in to fix their QC errors.

At all the overspray on the mounts. If they have not paid that much attention to detail, you cant have confidence in anything else. The fork was awful.

Get stuck in, it's only when this crap quality is sent straight back for correction that the manufacturers will take qc seriously Actually, firms like giant aren't even the manufacturers, so they need to be doing their qc seriously rather than just passing on the problems. If they don't, then we may as well just buy directly from a frame manufacturer. Either wise, we just tolerate it and use it, then send it back a week before the warranty expires

The paint job looks kind of crappy to be honest. My cheap Cube aluminum frame and fork look way cleaner machined and the paint job is way nicer

So since the last 5 years prices for biking (road or MTB) have gone up with 200-500% and yet we get 200-500% worse quality. This is greed showing. An honest question: what brands (road and/or MTB) are still trustworthy in terms of quality?

You should not have to carry out any corrective work on any new frame in any price bracket. Not fit for purpose shame on all the manufacturers turning out this rubbish at shocking prices. All cyclists should just not buy new bikes until real quality control returns. The more these types of videos expose the truth the more likely the manufacturers will have to stop ripping off their customers

giant PAIN IN THE ASS or giant piece of $#%T? perhaps in the middle but at least being offered a no cost swap with better qc or reduced price on frame? “Custom” paint always complicates issues, warranties, timeframes…. Good luck to the owner!

2k for a frame that has over spray and flakes of carbon hanging off and a fork that looks like a 10yr old has built?! Am out! I'd send it back, receive a refund and go with a different brand as faith in workmanship of said brand has now been compromised. If they can't be bothered to build and QC a 2000 pound frame only to a decent level, then sadly it says alot about what they think about there customers.
