Excellent demonstration of your technique. I had some experience on a bridge repair several years ago where we used acetylene torch heat on gusset plates that had been hit by snow plows to straighten them using basic clamping tools. We used temperature crayons to gauge the limits of the heated area and control the heating of the distorted plate section to put into the correct heat range ( plastic range). The temperature crayons look like lumber crayons but are designed to melt at specified temperatures thereby allowing rapid checking by touching to the surfaces. The key was using the correct temperature so as not to alter the steel. By memory the plates were around 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick. It worked. The technique was designed by a prof from University of Texas (I think?) and we had a phone chat with before we started. The temperature crayons were available from a welding supply firm. Those taillights still look great!

Hey, thank you so much! I need to find those crayons too, sounds amazing! I still want to build new lenses for those, I have an idea or two. Still planning it out…

Thank you, I came here to see you do the "weld" on pot metal at approximately 24 minutes in. Great job. I wanted to hear if you felt that would be strong enough?
@BlueOvalRescue
@BlueOvalRescue 8 месяцев назад
Thanks for watching! It feels very strong, but I have not put any real stress on the part itself. I can pick it up by the tab and I have also dropped it on the tab (onto my workbench) with no issues.

Thanks so much for sharing a new video of the mustang. Do you have a deadline to finish it? Or you are just taking your time?
@BlueOvalRescue
@BlueOvalRescue Год назад
Thanks for asking! I sooooo wish it could be finished before August. The chassis is my current Achilles Heal, and I wish I knew more about its arrival. I spoke with Scotts Hotrods a few weeks ago, and it sounds like the chassis will go into production “soon”. No firm date.

Nice work! Is that muddy stuff basically just solder or a special compound made for pot metal?
@BlueOvalRescue

I purchased the Muggy Weld specifically for repairing the Pot Metal, and it does seem like a specific solder and flux to do just that. It worked very well and was very simple to use. I do believe the solder is a specific mix just for Pot Metal, but I could be wrong about that.

Did you have to use flux? I didn't see that part. Thank you

I did use flux, using a small brush to apply it. It comes with the kit, and you can order more if needed. It helps determine if the metal is hot enough by turning a caramel color, also helps the solder flow.
