In this video, we explore the possibility of replacing natural gut mains on RF model string set-up with a multi string and still achieve the same level of play. We compare the characteristics of both types of strings and restring Patrick's RF model racquet with various multi strings to see how it performs on court.
Thank you Patrick as always.

For me this was interesting. As an older fellow like I started out with wood frames and a full bed of gut at high tension. As the years passed tennis racquets evolved as well as strings. I tried all manner of combinations over the years. I like some of the choices you made and some were similar to choices I made. Like your friend I was impressed with a thin poly at a low tension however just like him I broke mine within an hour of playing. I do like that X1 bi phase choice as well. I still play with gut main and ALU rough crosses. The champions choice is usually my second choice. My favorite gut is and has always been VS gut. I was also in search of a cheaper alternative years ago. Unfortunately it's been a few years since I've been able to play for reasons I won't get into but suffice it to say when I was searching for an alternative like your friend I tried just about every kind of gut on the market as well as other combinations like you did here. At the time there were not that many choices as far as gut and it was difficult to find on sale but it can be done. Also unfortunately all gut is not created equal and some of the gut I ran across didn't play nearly as well as I expected or have the lifespan. I haven't priced it out recently but I do know that a reel of string was always cheaper than individual packages. Maybe he could look into that. I also like this comments about the effect of poor weather conditions on the gut and that was something I ran into as well. I will say some of the coatings help some or if you would wax your own strings it did make a little bit of difference to the gut when the conditions were poor and mitigating the damage it did to the gut. When it was super humid or actually wet out it really hurt the gut. I have to agree with you that it does take some time to adjust if you're going to something new no matter what it is. I think you made some good choices for your experiment and I hope he finds something to his liking. I have a feeling though that if he can afford it he's going to stick to his champions choice. If he hasn't tried it I think he should try out the VS touch gut on the mains. It's not cheaper but I used swear by the stuff. Also you got to go with the leather power pads every time. If you didn't try that with the synthetic strings you should.☮️

I had a similar string journey. I used to play with champions choice, or hybrid of vs gut(mains)/alu power rough(crosses), but kept trying other choices mainly to cut costs. I kept with the gut as it lasted a lot longer as playable (compared to poly justifiying costs) and felt so much better. Also I use leather power pads on the mains for dampening and feel on the sweet spot hits. Before that I was using full bed alu rough, but had problems with tennis elbow (old injury giving me a sensitive elbow, not a technical issue). So I also use heavy and soft control racquets. So a powerful and soft string combo was wanted attributes from the stringbed. Used technifiber bi-phase as mains for a while, with alu or alu rough crosses, but I was looking for a cheaper alternative. Eventually after many setups I settled on Head Velocity mlt 17 mains and Msv Co-focus 17L crossess. The combo last better with smooth cross string and the feel (which was important for me) is still close enough to gut as well as the power level. Of course it doesn’t feel the same or as good (bi-phase was closer to gut), but the slickness of the two strings allow for fast snap back of the mains aiding in spin generation. Also this combo is more than 3x cheaper per string job.

Great video Harry & team. Been waiting a long time for something like this. Really appreciated the depth you guys went into for this. Give coach Patrick some more to try please!! NB: would have been useful to know how many hours and how playability changed with each. How long did the multi last with the confidential? Tour bite mains and X1 crosses might be next? Cheers ❤

I watched TK-Tennis reviews and he praised Super Toro mains with Kirschbaum Super Smash crosses (both in 1.23). Amazing poly-poly blend and super economical too with $9 and $6 = $7.50 per set! Became my blend to go to, really good and the one to try, possibly for Patrick as well ;)

I personally use a multi on the mains (Kirschbaum Touch) & a poly on the crosses (Hyper G). I’ve recently just changed to this hybrid from a full bed of Hyper G, as I wanted something easier on my arm; But also wanted a string more economical compared to a natural gut on the mains which I considered.

I use Volkl Cyclone and whatever multi i get on sale ( NRG2,Multifeel,NXT,Sensation). Lately Volkl is selling pre made 50/50 of Cyclone and their multi( forgot name) , its called Psycho for 10$. Ordered 3 but didnt put yet.

Slightly off topic but… Volkl is very underrated imo. Our favorite setup happens to the the Volkl V-Square 17 full bed at whatever tension. It is an absolute spin monster and is very comfortable on the arm. Will only last about 2 group sesh then it stretches a lot however, it is fairly affordable when compared to others imo.

First time I hear that anybody has power issues with Cyclone. That is considered ‘lower’ power polyester string. Especially at 57lbs. Then again who knows might be racquet. I played all of my life with original Head Prestige Pro from 80s. Switched to PB 10 mid only 4 years ago since all 4 of my Prestiges were simply not worth the hustle of fixing gromets…

I play tennis at least 6 hours a week. What really has been decisive in my playr, by descending order of importance is: 1. having a good personal.coach, 2. having a personal coach, 3. having a bad personal coach that at least can feed you balls, 4. being obsessive with tennis and fitness 6. tennis shoes, 5. string tension, 6. string type 7. racket string pattern, 8. racket added weigh,t 9. to 19. mood in a particular day, how welk you slept nigjt before and many other things i don't remmember now, 20.. racket brand/model as long as you you grab something from the advanced player line from any major brand 21. string brand.

If you're getting a bad coach just to feed you balls you might as well buy a ball machine (or play with a hitting partner).

My friend wanted to switch off champ choice too. Try x-1 biphase at 56 and solinco Tourbite diamond rough in the cross at 53. X-1 can also be subbed for luxilon natural gut bc it’s coated compared to the Wilson gut

Ive used in my rf97 gut and rpm power and that lasted me 8 or so hours before breaking. Played great till the last 15min. Tried technifibre nrg with lynx touch and first time it lasted 5 hours. Second restring only lasted 2 hours and they both broke in the sweetspot. I will try x-one biphase to see durability but im sure there is nothing out there close to gut. Gut lasts longer than multi and holds tension longer while giving more power, feel and touch. Its like a cheat code.

Previously used the RF 97, strung with Babalot Gut in the mains, and 4G in the crosses. Recently switched to Head Speed Pro 2022. Totally different racquet. Would,like to keep the same or similar string. I have 12 packs of gut left. Playing at 4800 ft election. Primarily doubles play with flatter stroke. Big serve, slice backhand and many, many volleys. But need help with adding a bit more top spin. What would be your recommended string tension and set up. And what multi to use if I ever decide to go away from gutter. I’m thinking X1. Thanks in advance.

For multi that still is controlled but has a little more pop maybe try out some Triax. 16 for durability but 17 gauge if you want even more pop.

Agreed. I used to use champs choice, then also tried other hybrids. Now - triax full time - simpler and very similar spin and feel as any of the hybrid set ups. However, I break them after 7 hrs.

I tried champion's choice and it was awesome. The cost is too high for me. I could not imagine stringing 4 frames every month with a premium gut/poly set up. I recently went back to the very cheap version of the gut/poly set up with forten syn gut/Gosen polynon. It is not anywhere near the awesome feel and power of champion's choice, but I get similiar feel and power at a much cheaper rate. It is not a replacement, but a cheap tradeoff.

I don't understand using rough on the cross strings. Isn't that going to impede the snapback of the gut and also wear the gut out prematurely? I've used that gut setup with Kirschbaum pro line evaluation 125 in the crosses because of the slick feel of the string to take advantage of the snapback the gut naturally has. When I'm not playing tournaments. I use confidential with the Kirschbaum.
@padflash
@padflash Месяц назад
2 reasons I can think of: 1) rough causes less friction than its round counterpart - more friction will chew through your gut/multi main and it will impede string movement (this is of course comparing 2 versions of the same string like ALU vs ALU Rough, and not a rough string vs a slicker round string); 2) preference in feel.

@@dmf30 I see. Nice that you have something like mine. Hm 53, I think I'll let one of my student try that tension. When I do put a poly cross, I would think 53 would be the spot and Gut 55 for my student. But man, the stiffness of the racquet do play a role of the tension too though. On the RF 97 v13 the tension do do better on 55-60. Babolat would be better 55 and below. If playing at a high competitive level tension will matter. As a recreational it probably doesn't matter because your already at that high level and just swing away.
@dmf30
@dmf30 Месяц назад
@@TrumpforPresident24i use to string my rackets tighter. i dropped the tension to 53 and feel i can control the racket. it feels good. what i like about not is that it holds tension. i don’t find that i am getting as much spin as i would like. being a little older i am reluctant to go with a poly although tour bite 20 may be a decent option yet that tension loss is great.forgot to mention that i agree with you to increase tension in the RF. much more flexible racket
@TrumpforPresident24
@TrumpforPresident24 Месяц назад
@@dmf30 the spin is your technique to create it, it's not the strings. Yeah you probably get a good 1 week of play and then either cut it out or play till it breaks but it just doesn't have the fresh juicy new string feel. By the way I play similarly like Federer, groundstroke, serve, and everything. I want him to sponsor me. Let's bring back that Neo one hand backhand.
@dmf30
@dmf30 Месяц назад
@@TrumpforPresident24 I actually have a lot of topspin- always have- particularly on my forehand. But the strings do help with spin e.g. a shaped spin will cut into the ball better but i don't use a shaped string becuase it will saw through the gut or multi too quickly. I wish you the best in your tennis game and hope he sponsors you- and gets you a nice contract with ON!@!@
