Can you retire now? How do I know if you have enough money to retire? If financial independence early retirement is important to you, stay tuned. Today, we discuss the retirement Rule of 25 and how to accelerate getting to that financial independence number. We ask 6 questions to help you answer the question, can you retire now? We delve into the rule of 25 for early retirement. Whether it is debt free living, reducing your monthly spend, being frugal and planning for big ticket items, having an early retirement income bridge strategy, generating passive income or taking more risk, we try to help you retire sooner and start living your best life. If you find yourself asking, What do I need to do to retire early?, then this video is for you.
The rule of 25 states that you should have 25 times your planned annual spending saved before you retire. For example, if you expect to spend $60,000 a year in retirement, you should have roughly 1.5 million or 25 times that amount. It is based on the 4% rule that is a rule of thumb that states you can withdraw 4 percent of your savings the first year of retirement and then adjust for inflation each subsequent year for 30 years. Inflation 2022 is a major concern and today’s discuss offers some suggestions to offset this retirement obstacle.
We believe having a debt free retirement is a key first step to how to retire early and gain your financial independence and financial freedom for retirement. It is the starting point in our questions. The consumer debt crisis in America is a retirement savings killer and we must encourage people to change their thoughts on debt. Hopefully you can retire sooner or even have an early retirement.
We hope you enjoy the rest of our “how-to” series on retirement and travel, along with our weekly travel vlogs on our journey around the world.
Please join us for a 10-year journey and world travel vlog. This is our retirement and we wanted to retire early and see the world. Perhaps our world travel will give some ideas on what to do after retirement and where to travel in 2022. As older travel vloggers, we have different perspectives as we show you where to visit in 2022 and give you our experiences as we travel the world and show you where to travel now. This is our retirement and we want to share it with you.

ABOUT US:
As the retirement travelers, we have always dreamed of traveling, but we never in a million years thought we would become travel vloggers and start a RU-vid channel. But, that is what we did! We work hard every day to become better and create something that others will enjoy. Having a community of friends, old and new, follow our journey is fun and exciting to us.
In 2019, we achieved our goal of visiting every state in the union in our Airstream. We also visited every national park in the lower 48. We are big believers in lists, so of course we plan to see the remaining 12 parks in the next few years.
In 2021, we made the big decision to extreme downsize to just a suitcase and a small backpack, each. We started our journey around the world beginning in Central America. We hope that over the next ten years, we will have seen many beautiful things, made many memories and new friends, and shared the experience with our children and grandchildren.
We hope you enjoy the journey with us. Drop us a note in the comments and be sure to hit subscribe! 🗺 🎥 🌮

Thanks for the insight. I've always planned myself and have no plans of using a retirement planner. Unless I'm wrong, they typically charge ~1% of your portfolio. Let's say you have 3M in retirement and live 30 years (in your case 85, which is reasonable). That's 30K q yr or 900K over your retirement. Rather than cutting your spending, perhaps reduce your expenses. BTW, Venice was my favorite area in Italy, with a close second being the Cinque Terre Mediterranean coast.

Where and how do you have family gatherings with your children and grandchildren? Do you have a video or content where you discuss this? One of the beliefs that I want to dispell for my wife and I is the idea that, if I have a smaller place in retirement (condo, villa, etc) then the kids and grandkids wont have a place to gather with us.

Thank you for INSPIRING (you said it) me. I'm a 60 year old single senior flight attendant, and I'm considering my side hustle to be "part time" work as a flight attendant! That's a more than $30K in annual income to work 6-8 days! Dave Ramsey has lived at my house for a long time; almost debt free just the law school debt and house (yeap, I'm a lawyer too). So following your principles, I'm in better shape than I thought. Of course, all those years of lean living and savings helps too! Yes. You have lit a fire under me! Oh, and no travel expense for me to get where I'm going! P.S. Newly Subscribed.

Hi John, new subscriber here. Loving your videos and just making my way through your back catalogue. I have a few questions about your investments and how they fund your retirement. You may already have done a video/s that covers my questions so please point me in the right direction if that's the case. Here goes. 1) how much money do you have invested, what are you average yearly expenses, and are you using the 4% rule from your investments to fund your retirement? 2) where do you have your money invested, i.e. low cost index funds and ETFs? What about real estate & renting out property? 3) does RU-vid provide you much of an income, i.e. does it fund your day to day expenses, or is it more a labour of love and provides beer-money income? Thank you John and great work! Cheers

All there. Have had no debt for more than a decade. Everything paid for. Kiddo out of house and settled into a career. Going out at age 57. We have 4 years living expenses in cash, 3 years in non-retirement conservative investments. So plenty of bridge funds and then some. Then about 20 years in IRAs. So if the investments were all in cash reserves or say bonds earning 1 to 2 %, we would still not run out of money and that's without turning on SS. Once SS happens, well... investments will rarely be needed for much. Going to leave investments mostly in index and good growth funds with long track records of above market performance. In up years, we will take whatever off those to back feed the cash and non retirement funds and will be doing some principle draw downs in our mid to late 60s to reduce the pain of RMDs should we get there. As well as the trust planning for inheritance so we do not overly burden our child with big tax hits from IRA inheritance where currently they have 10 years to draw it all down. Love your content, keep it up and have fun !

Hi , just found your channel. Same age. One concern i have about selling home and traveling world is the rapid escalation in home prices. That if I sell and a couple years later not be able to afford what I left. What is your solution to this? Thank you!
@RetirementTravelers
@RetirementTravelers 2 года назад
Hi Phil, Great question. Here is our particular solution to your dilemma. 1. We plan to travel full time for at least 10 years. A lot can happen with home prices over a decade. We expect there will be another lower cycle at some point. We are in no hurry. 2. After living in an Airstream for two years, we realized we never need another big home. When and If we ever buy another home, it will be much smaller. 3. We took the money from our home sale and invested all of it. When we need it for another home someday, we should have funds available. 4. With home ownership, there are significant costs of maintaining a home like taxes, insurance, maintenance, HOA fees, etc that we didn’t want to pay every year. We know selling everything and traveling is a big leap of faith, but it is the best thing we ever did. Hope this helps, John and Bev

Many people will have pension/Social Security income (if they are older than you) so that would offset a portion of the monthly expenses they think they will need. Using your example of 5000/month traveling if their income is 3000/month the amount of savings they have could be less and still be okay...correct?

I'm sorry but this advice is plain wrong. Numbers for retirement range from 7x->20X, with the recommended average being 12x by 67. The only time you can retire without worry, and live off your returns is IF you do hit over 20x's, AND you earn an average of 7%, and only pull 4% max per year, and can curb your spending during recession years. If you constantly travel, then you will have to learn to live skinny. Vacations are more expensive than living at home. Then you hit RMD's when you hit 70.5/72 years old. If you didn't look at this number you should. Basically the government FORCES you to draw down your tax deferred plans so you can't live off it indefinitely. With that much saved, you will definitely hit a higher tax bracket, meaning the government will take MORE of what you earn in taxes during retirement. Only way to counteract this is a ROTH 401K which has no RMD. But this is a fairly new offering by business, so your tax-free investments are still limited.
@RetirementTravelers

Thanks. Great advice on the Roth’s to prepare for RMD’s. John and Bev

Great point about RMDs, however, the 4 percent rule safe withdrawal rate or 25x expenses is pretty standard in the financial independent community. Check out the trinity study and all the research that came from that. Based on the trinity study, 7x-20x expenses would be too low and you would run out of money. John and Bev are spot on.
