I has seen some gravel rides on Strava, where the rider used a flat bar gravel bike, instead a specifically bought gravel bike. So every time I see my Wife's Specialized Sirrus sat in the shed, I wonder what it could do on gravel. So I messaged Kev and Justin to see if they wanted to join me on a gravel ride, with Kev borrowing my Trek Domane SL5 in it's gravel set up, to see if I could keep up on a 95km Gravel ride. So I threw together a route with some challenging terrain, and set up a Mendip Gravel Adventure. The only thing left, was to see how I got on on the Specialized.
The bike I use in the video is a Specialized X Sirrus 2.0. Which is currently on sale for £529-
The spec:
Its a one by chainset, with 8 gears and a 12-42T and a 40T front ring.
The tyres are 700x42 Pathfinder Sport.

It’s definitely a flat bar for me Specialized Stumpjumper, XC, carbon frame, wheels. A joy to ride!!! I’m so envious of your terrain and the amount of bridle and footpaths you have, guess I will have to enjoy them vicariously through your blogs. A big thumbs up from me 👍

Thanks Spike, I’m forevermore looking when I’m out riding and wondering where the bridleways go, and even take the wife out for walks just to have a nosey and see if they are rideable, but mainly the gravel setting on Komoot finds some incredible riding. It also finds some jungle, so can’t win all the time, but it’s fun exploring anyway!!

Gravel bikes are massive at the moment, seems everyone is doing it…. Took me 15 years to get on the tarmac from mountain biking… but that did look a lot of fun. Well done lads. 👏🏽

Thanks Lewis, I’ve never been Mountain biking, it’s something I’d love to try, but will need to buy a new bike! 🤔 But I’m not brave enough to ask the wife!! 😬😂

Thanks Terry, it was just something different to try, I really enjoyed riding it, but the the comfort on my Trek will obviously make it my first choice. But I’d definitely take Deb’s Specialized Sirrus out again…….. if she lets me!! I still haven’t washed it! 🙄

Great views and a real mix of terrain. You can see why this gravel malarky is so popular now. Well edited as usual Darren. 👏

Omg absolutely loved every second of this. I’m a coward downhill off road with my bike too, although on my MTB much better could be the flat bar makes me feel closer to the brakes 😬. I think my brother has just purchased an ORRO like Justin has, it certainly did well on the tracks.

Thanks Michelle, I loved every minute of the ride, I don’t know what it is about riding off road, but I can’t stop smiling, even though it terrifies me and really tests my ability. The only thing I’d have changed about Deb’s Specialized bike would be the handlebar grips and swap them out for more padded ones. The bike itself was a joy to ride. Justin loves his Orro, I didn’t film it, but he can’t resist going off the tracks and finding even more challenging trails amongst the trees. Three very happy cyclists at the end!

@@DarrenPhillips yes I know that feeling despite the fear I smile all the time off road, I should explore more bridle ways here as we have loads, but they can be more walkabike than ride 😱. My Mountain Bike is also a specialized it’s a rockhopper model nice and lite. I fitted it with ergonomic handle bar grips. Owen has been using it in some of my vlogs. Hopefully my brother will bring his bike down soon and I can have a go on it. I love my Trek Domane tho.

Riding both hardtail mtb and agravel bike, I find huge overlap in what they're suitable for. If really bumpy and gnarly mtb every time, if less challenging surface then gravel bike. Recently cycled Peddars Way, 46 offroad in Norfolk, iwas on gravel bike 40mm tyres , my son rode hardtail mtb 2.1 tyres. We swapped bikes a few times and concluded that each bike was marginally better on different surfaces. We came to the conclusion that a decent hardtail with forks that can be locked out is best overall. Depends where you ride most.

Thanks Andrew, I’m fairly new to the world of off-road and have never been mountain biking, The bridleways and tracks differ in surface so much though, I think I felt far more comfortable on the flat bar than I would have on the Gravel bike. I just need to persuade the Wife that I need another bike now though and have a go at MTB on the trails. 😂

Gravel bikes are the best overall machines for super long distances on a range of surfaces. Yes they’re not as capable as a good hard tail mtb on rough stuff but you just go a bit slower. On roads and gravel you can whack along at a great pace. I love mine. Best tool for freedom ✌🏻

That was the surprising thing about the flat bar bike, was that I could easily keep up on the roads. The wheels are quite big and the pathfinder tyres had a slick central tread, which made them cruise on the roads. I did like the stability the flat bars gave me off-road. But I do love the fact my Trek converts to a gravel bike, so it’s always good to have options.

That descent near the end looks amazing. Is this route on your Strava dude? Nice video 👍🏻 PS. I got caught on an overgrown path like the one shown after at the weekend. Garmin led me onto it and it was laden with brambles and thistles and nettles. I braved it and fell off into the thicket. I was cursing!
@DarrenPhillips
@DarrenPhillips Год назад
Thank you!, yes all my rides are on Strava, the link is in the description. The descent was coming down from Crooks Peak on the Mendips. It was a lot of fun, even if the bottom part was a little too technical for me, it was certainly a better way to go down, than the way we came up. Sadly, it’s not the first time I found “jungle” on one of my rides! The last time was a lot worse than this!! 😂

How are you getting on with the Prizm Jade lenses (just slotted in a set of Prizm Road on my Half Jacket 2.0s, but yet to ride with them)? Btw, headset suspension and a carbon fork set make a flat bar far more compliant and comfortable on gravel, so if you were to do the ride on an X 4.0 rather than an X 2.0 as you have there, with the Future Shock 1.5 dampening and carbon fork, you would have a bike that is better suited to the job

Sadly I lost my Oakley’s with the Jade lenses, which I was gutted about. They came off my helmet on a gravel ride and I didn’t notice!! 😫. This video was just a bit of fun, with me borrowing my Wife’s bike, so Kev could use my Trek, as he didn’t have a gravel bike.

@@DarrenPhillips Damn they looked like nice shades as well. Yeah, I saw your unboxing video of the Trek MTB, nice bike. I'm on a Sirrus X 4.0 with a few upgrades, I did have a Sirrus 2.0, but I traded up for the X 4.0, which is pretty much an all roader, best for my usage, it's light and fast on Patfinder Pro 38s

Did you find out the difference between the aerodynamicist and carbon disc wheels from hunt. I’m unsure on the difference from research ?
@DarrenPhillips
@DarrenPhillips Год назад
I didn’t no, all I can tell you is they are once wheels, and are just as good, if not better than a set of Fast Forward F6’s that I have on my other bike, which cost twice the price. The Hunt’s paid me back when my bottom bracket collapsed in my Stonehenge/Imber video, as the amount of freewheeling they gave me on my way home over 50miles was unbelievable. They really saved me that day. If I could give them an 11/10, I would.

If you going off road get a mountain bike gravel bikes are mediocre off road and mediocre on the road just marketing crap

It’s actually my Wife’s bike that I’m using and it’s perfect for what she needs. She’s not a cyclist, but likes to ride her bike with me. I’ve found it to be quite enjoyable to ride, but after taking it mountain biking a couple of times. I plan to get myself a MTB bike when I can afford one.
