If you have an apple and you can see a part of it is rotten, you don’t necessarily have to throw the whole apple away. You cut the part you don’t want to eat and eat what you see is good. The apple is the art, the tree that produces said apple is the life of the artist.
This was certainly a thought-provoking video. In my opinion , if an artist shares outrageous views in public or is involved in a scandal , it doesn't change the fact that they are remarkable artists or how talented they are. For example, Eminem had shared some controversial views about women and the LGBT community in the past. However , I cannot fail to recognize the fact that he had worked very hard to write his own songs and as an artist he had managed to flourish and grow. I think that sometimes it is possible to like somebody's art without sharing the same views or agree with what they do.
As a person from Russia, knowing how much artists contribute to a war, I would never ever support an artist and his/her art if there's some shit about their personality. I think it's the question of responsibility and precedent.
Hi Mitch Hi Isi 🙂👋 from France. I'm enjoying everytime I watch another video you do. So, yes I can separate the art from the artist . When you know the music or a movie by a main character, a singer, And then you hear some news that the person did such and such thing , I don't think I can stop listening to good music.🌞 Have a great day! I'm watching easy German too🙂👍
Can you seperate Hitler and what he did from his artwork?.🤔🤔 I mean If you gift me a picture l won't be mad.. it's verry expensive and l could sell it 💪💪
You got me thinking ... I think with actors it's easier to separate their work with their life or views, because acting means performing someone else. So I can appreciate their work and not like them as a person. With music it's different I think, because as a singer you always put something of yourself into your work - it's more interwoven with your personality. So I wouldn't listen to Xavier Naidoo for instance because of his fascist world view. Hope that makes sense?
I used to like Gary Glitter and the Jackson five , not so much Michael, always something odd about him but now I can't enjoy their music because of the thoughts that go through my head while listening! I wouldn't feel bad about anyone else listening ,but definitely no money should be made by people who have been convicted of such awful crimes Films are different because there are so many others involved , who have worked hard , still the individual who has done awful things and being convicted shouldn't be profiting from their work.
Actually, I still follow many artists who have done terrible things, but the feeling is different. I don´t feel so good about their art, I don´t like it as much anymore.
Thanks for the video 👍 I guess I can to some extent separate the art from the artist as long as I neither see nor hear the artist, that's why I can enjoy reading "The Picture of Dorian Gray" but I can't stand watching many movies because the appearance of some actors/actresses reminds me constantly of their disgusting way of life. I guess it's not unusual for artists to be immoral, the idea is that they believe that art should be unconstrained and that their work should and does drive society towards more liberty (for example nudity existed in paintings before existing on seashores), hence artists are always in dissonance with their societies' values & norms, and such dissonance is reflected on their way of life.
@Colette He was someone who didn't believe much in the moral standards of his society and time (if he believed much in any) and he was convicted and imprisoned for indecent acts.
@Colette Yes, that. And also I'm not concerned about what happened after his death. He was indecent by the moral standards of his time, and is still indecent by the moral standards of my religion, for that it doesn't change according to people's changing views or whims.
@@islamadam8502 It's interesting that apparently some people's feelings of self-righteousness can come from the admission that their "moral standards" would have fit better in the 1800s, but I guess some people need to find inventive ways to feel superior!
For me, separating the artist from the art depends on the case... I love H.P. Lovecraft's work despite his absolutely abhorrent racist and xenophobic views, yet I can no longer enjoy Harry Potter on account of the author being a horrendous transphobe. The difference here lies in Lovecraft being long since dead, his views being extreme even in his days, and are not contributing to current racism and xenophobia. J.K. Rowling on the other hand is actively harming the trans community through word and deed, with no sign of that changing any time soon. So I think the best course of action is taking into account how active the artist is propagating their problematic views or deeds and whether it directly shows up in their work. As for Kanye West, I already disliked him for being a jackass, and rapping isn't really a style of music I enjoy. So my opinion on him hasn't changed much.
